Blackmore's Night - Ritchie Blackmore Sued By Record Label

Former Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is facing a lawsuit from the label Frontiers Music Srl, reports New York Post, over lack of promotion. According to the Italian label, he didn't promote Blackmore's Night's latest album, All Our Yesterdays, tanking sales in the process.

Richard Blackmore signed a three-year deal to let Frontiers Records license and distribute his 2015 release worldwide, provided he made "reasonable best efforts" to support the album. But the Blackmore's Night's album got no help from the musician, Frontiers charges in a Manhattan federal court lawsuit.

During a summer tour to promote All Our Yesterdays, Blackmore blew off dozens of media appearances and interviews, the lawsuit alleges. In Germany alone, Blackmore bailed on six TV interviews and 25 to 30 tabloid outlets, it says.

Frontiers Music Srl, which paid Blackmore a $220,000 advance, is seeking a minimum of $150,000 in damages. As for the other side, a lawyer for Blackmore denied the allegations, calling them "ludicrous."

Seems like Blackmore has not aged gracefully at all. The same primadonna spirit lingers in him even in his 70s. Fucking hell.

What sort of weird deal is this where the artist has to do the promotion? That should be the record label's job.

Not really. The artist still has to appear in interviews and other promotional events, and much of those are organized by labels.

Oops I missed the part of blowing off media appearances and interviews. Somehow I thought it was about general promotion, like ads and such hahahahaha

Even then, I didn't know that a label could sue an artist for it. I don't remember reading about an artist being sued by a label for not showing up at interviews before. But I never cared about the business side of music, so perhaps I simply overlooked it before.
I've seen musicians being sued for not showing up at gigs or cancelling a live performance, however.

I have had wuite a few artists not show up[ for interviews, be it face-to-face, a phoner, or a mailer, loads of times and never have they been sued by their record label for that

To me Frontier Records sounds like a total RIP-OFF label.

So, I was right then. Well, I'm sure some artists don't show-up for interviews or other promotional activities from time to time but I believe it is not the norm. They shoot themselves in the foot by not promoting their own material. And let's face it, most Metal artists don't make a lot of money and are not sitting on a fortune, so they can't really skip promotional activities.

I have a question... Beside the fact that doesn't Frontiers know who they are dealing with (I mean Ritchie is well known for being stubborn, eccentric, a bit weird, etc), why didn't Candace Night help with this promotion? Where is she in all this?

He could have stood by the road with a sign saying 'buy my album'. I've told my future sister-in-law to do that to promote her book.
