Megadeth - Former Drummer Nick Menza Dies

Devastating news arrive this Sunday morning. Multiple sources are claiming that former and great Megadeth drummer Nick Menza has reportedly died at the age of 51 after suffering a heart failure last night onstage while performing with his band OHM at Los Angeles club The Baked Potato. The venue itself has confirmed it and Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine tweeted about it, feeling gutted.

Menza was best known for his work with Megadeth between 1989-1998. He recorded drums on four Megadeth albums, including the legendary Rust In Peace album in 1990.

Dave Mustaine said via Twitter: "Tell me this isn't true. I woke at 4am to hear Nick Menza passed away on May 21 playing his drums with Ohm at the Baked Potato. #nickmenzarip."

With every passing year as I peg on another year to my own life, I'm well aware I will lose people in my family, others I know, and of course talents like Nick Menza. It's an unfortunate part of life, death, but it's best to accept that it will happen regardless as unbelievable as it seems. He was a fantastic drummer and from what I hear and have read, a nice bloke. Condolences to his family, friends, and bandmates past and present.

Was one of my drumming idols when I started. And, imo, the best for Megadeth. Always wanted him back with the band. Just sucked that he was forming a new band & getting back into the thrash scene like old times.. And what I've read, OHM's previous drummer also passed on stage from a heart attack last year. Maybe a cursed band?... Nevertheless, RIP Menza, thanks for your talent & being a cool dude

My friend (Ace Trump) and I had a personal interview with Marty Friedman in the lounge of their hotel, I believe it was during the Cryptic Writings tour. Anyway, it was early morning so we had the place to ourselves. When Marty left, Nick appeared at the entrance of the lounge. We said "Hey Nick" and he immediately came over, sat down and put his feet up on the table. Then began a fun and interesting conversation. I've met and interviewed quite a few musicians, but this conversation was one of the most memorable and entertaining.
We asked "So Nick, we heard you worked with Scotty (from Star Trek) on a documentary about U.F.O.s, we were wondering, have you ever witnessed anything like that?"
Nick's answer kinda shocked us.
"Naw, I think its all a bunch of bullshit."
Then he said
"I'm the master of deception."
So I turned to him and said
"Well, if you are the master of deception, you could be lying to us right now"
"He pointed to me and said " Hey.......you're pretty quick"
Then Nick gave some really good advice.
We asked him what his next project would be. He told us he wanted to do a kids show.
When we asked why he told us "Because there's always going to be kids in the world that need to be taught and entertained. So a kids show should be easy to market. Then I can use the profits to do a project I really would like to do.
Sure, our interaction with Nick was short, 40 minutes or so. But hey, that's the great thing about music world, the memories it brings and the encounters that can happen.
I've always thought the best years for Megadeth was when they had the Mustaine, Ellefson, Friedman, Menza line up. I'm sure many would agree. Nick seemed to bring fun to the band.
I am really saddened by the news Nick passed. It seemed like an instantaneous friendship when we met him.

My condolences to his friends, fans and family, and of course all the musicians in his life.
