The Agonist - New Album Detailed, Debut First Song

Finally, today we have new music from The Agonist's next album! The band has decided to share all about the new record and also reveal a new song. The follow-up to last year's Eye Of Providence is called Five and will be their second with vocalist Vicky Psarakis. Napalm Records will release the album this September 30th. Check out the first single "The Chain" on their brand new lyric video. Did you enjoy the song?

Says guitarist Danny Marino: "We are so anxious to release this record to our fans and the world! This album represents another shift in the evolution of The Agonist! Vicky and I went even deeper into what makes a song really connect. I'm very proud of everyone's hard work making this the most diverse and interesting record for us to date! It was a great learning experience working with Mike Plotnikoff and fully immersing ourselves in the recording process 24/7. Just as much as we are excited to release this album we are psyched to get back out on the road and connect directly with our fans! Europe gets the first taste before we unleash on North America this November with Epica."

Vocalist Vicky Psarkis adds: "Being in The Agonist for over 2 years now and after releasing my debut album with the band and numerous tours, I can say that Five is the record where I believe that we finally found our sound! There's a certain confidence that comes with experience and there's something about being fully comfortable that can take your approach towards songwriting to a whole other level. Working on the lyrics and vocals on this album was an incredibly natural process. Halfway into the pre-production, we realized that a lot of our songs seemed to be telling a story and hearing the album in its entirety is like escaping into our world."

Great news, I like them better with Vicky on board. Loved their last album, expecting this to be good as well.

OH BOY HERE WE GO. MS's local blinded The Agonist fangirl here, bane of all comments sections having remotely anything to do with the band or Alissa.

While I am not really liking this song, it actually gives me a lot of hope for the album. Eye Of Providence was so horribly generic, dull, and lifeless. It had nearly all the ingredients of The Agonist but felt like an imitation of their own sound more than anything. Every shred of uniqueness that was present from their Lullabies days was no longer there. But this here shows a similar band to the Alissa days. Different sound, maybe, but same creative drive to do something they haven't written before.

As to the actual song, I've given it five listens so far and it's not too great. The intro was awful at a first listen but now it's just merely okay. It feels too much like Vicky trying to copy Alissa's evil-sounding cleans from "Predator And Prayer" but comes off more as a more annoying Kittie. The harsh vocals, on the other hand, are much more distinctly different from her predecessor. They definitely are a lot more emotional, which gives a different sound to the band (in a good way). The chorus is like nothing they've done bfore, but I don't really feel like it works in this song. It's intended to be these epic sound but it has nothing to work with. The entire thing feels awkward and disjointed really. It could have worked better if the song were lengthier and more dragged out. Three minute songs are uncommon for the band, and this is the second shortest song they've ever put out (first being "Memento Mori" off their debut at 3:09, and I'm not counting the Swan Lake acapella.)

In other words, this is a step in the right direction for the band. Just like how Nightwish played extremely safe upon hiring Floor, The Agonist wanted to make an album to show "hey, we have a new vocalist, and she's pretty good" more than making the great works of Lullabies and Prisoners. Now they can finally return to making the cool stuff they did before. Color me excited.

And that art is sick.

Think I tried to listen to The Agonist once, didn't really like it. Just listened to this track, didn't really like it either. End of comment
