John Haughm - Launches New Band

John Haughm of Agalloch fame has a new band. It is called Pillorian and also includes Stephen Parker (Maestus/ex-Arkhum) and Trevor Matthews (Uada/ex-Infernus). Sounds promising? The band will release their debut album through Eisenwald Records in early 2017. The recordings should begin in the Fall/Winter.

Eisenwald shortly describes their sound: "Exploring the context of obscurity, Pillorian takes inspiration from blackened metal, dark folk, and avantgarde music. Adding something ancient that hovers within the music and its somber aura, it helps to fortify the group's audial scope in an unconventional way."

Judging by the Eisenwald back catalogue, I predict some atmospheric black metal

Spot on I think. In comments on the band's Facebook page they describe it as a mix of black metal and "dark metal," whatever that means.

Looking forward to this.

Paradoxical

"Pillorian takes inspiration from blackened metal, dark folk, and avantgarde music" - So basically Agalloch 2.0?

Going to keep a look out for this one.

I hope both new post-Agalloch bands won't concentrate on doing Agalloch sounding stuff again. Their last showed they had no more steam for that.

My first thought when I read the description was "Arcturus". So, might be great, might sound like a piano full of cutlery falling down the stairs.

Curious to see what they come up with. I like Maestus and kind of like Uada, and I'm hoping the change-up can provide a little inspiration for Haughm to innovate a little more than he did on the most recent Agalloch records.

Probably a reference to Pillory, a device used for public punishment.

They also use the word Pillorian on the song "Dead Winter Days":
I shot down the sun with bow and flame
Pillorian for the dead winter

Furthermore they have an EP titled "Of Stone, Wind, and Pillor"

Ahah thanks for the background, guys.

So, it's all related to Agalloch then.

Will definitely be checking this band out when they release something. Agalloch went downhill after Ashes, so I was quite relieved to hear about the split. Hopefully this fresh start will prove inspiring for Haughm. As the band stated on FB, "A fresh start with something new is better than beating a dead, un-inspiring horse."

Alright, lets hear the first release. I'm not dying for Agalloch-kind of music or JH's touch over more metal, I won't mind something though.

I'll keep an eye on both projects. Even though I have the feeling that none of them will probably mark me as much as Agalloch did.
