Cellar Darling - New Band Of Anna Murphy, Merlin Sutter & Ivo Henzi

Earlier this year, there was a split in the Eluveitie camp which meant that drummer Merlin Sutter, vocalist and hurdy gurdy player Anna Murphy and guitarist Ivo Henzi departed the band. They did say, however, that they would have a new project. And here it is! Cellar Darling is born and today you can hear the first fruits of their labour, the music. The band has now released two songs, "Challenge" and "Fire, Wind & Earth". Don't miss it!

"'Fire, Wind & Earth" is the bonus track from their very first single, "Challenge", released on the 23rd of September 2016.

Cellar Darling explained: "We are incredibly excited to share the very first Cellar Darling song with you! Along with 'Challenge', we have also released another song from the same writing and recording sessions: 'Fire, Wind & Earth' is a bonus track we couldn't keep from you any longer! Both songs are available for streaming and downloading at Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Deezer, and all your favorite platforms and services.

"'Challenge' is about an inner struggle, a battle you are fighting against yourself and the world. It is you, screaming at yourself in the mirror and getting high on new-found strength. It is failing, overcoming and achieving. The bipolar dance that is life. We have fallen. We have screamed. We have battled. We found strength. We will overcome. The lyric video features the talented actress Fabienne Fellmann (who is also featured on the cover artwork). It is based on an idea by Anna Murphy, directed by Anna Murphy & Cellar Darling, with videography and editing by Merlin Sutter and generous post production help by Michel Frutig at Maybaum Film.

"Both songs were recorded and produced by Cellar Darling and Marco Jencarelli & Anna Murphy Soundfarm studios, mixed by Tommy Vetterli at Newsound studios, and mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street studios. All strings are recorded by the one and only Shir-Ran Yinon, and the artwork features photography by Merlin Sutter.
"

Cellar Darling have also confirmed their first live show with The Gentle Storm, the band fronted by Anneke Van Giersbergen, at the Melkweg, Amsterdam on December 17th.

Not worse than what you can hear on the mainstream radios...
It is not a metal band, not even remotely.

Pop rock. Anna Murphy seems like the new Britney Spears of rock music. I got my hopes up when I heard the rather heavy opening in the second track but then it got to be the usual pop shite. If this is what Anna wanted to do, thus departing from Eluveitie, then it is a rather poor decision.

A pretty decent and gentle form of a pop rock meets folk metal attempt. Could be done better, for sure, but not a bad start.

I enjoy it. Better then most new music. I hope in the future they bring the guitar up in the mix just a bit and a few more switches.

I enjoyed "Fire, Wind & Earth" - looks very good and fitting.

But, what a lame bandname.

First track is just shit. The second one is quite decent. Except for Anna who gets to show her singing chops, I feel both Ivo and especially Merlin have (been forced to?) stepped down their game significantly to make this radio friendly music, which is just a huge shame. Merlin is a fucking beast on the drums but doesn't show that at all with this band.

Also, does anyone else feel like "Fire, Wind and Earth" is a kind of fuck you to Eluveitie's "Of Fire, WInd and Wisdom"? The titles seem just a bit too similar...I'm getting the impression Merlin did not leave the band on good terms at all. Maybe Anna saw this as her chance to follow her own aspirations (although she already has/had a solo project going on). Maybe she was trying to push Eluveitie more in this direction or wanted to be more in the spotlight, while Chrigel was having none of that. It seems clear that Ivo left after hearing two of his best friends leaving, but what the reason for Merlin's dismissal was remains a mystery. I hope we will get some clarity in this soon.

I've said it before and I'm saying it again. I am SO glad these guys split up with Eluveitie because they were weighing down the band's creativity. This project sounds really, really bland and lukewarm. That's a big Nope from me.

I like it alot. It's clearly not eluveitie but it's still heavy. It has soul and tons of hurdy gurdy. What's not to like.

Yep. Plus this would explain the one years news delay for Evocation II (11.09.2015 working on - 18.09.2016 official recording annuncement), without forget Ekuveitie's tour duties
Anyway i feel some changes both on "Awake" single from I.H. 's "Forest of Fog". Even before he was playing a more accessible (folkish) black metal, but you can feel Anna's influence in some musical choises (infact on recording and mixing Anna is credited). My 2 cent at the end, but that it's what i feel about.

As long as Chrigel stands behind the helm of Eluveitie and they find some killer replacements for Anna, Ivo and Merlin, I'm sure they will continue to make awesome music. I will miss Anna's vocals though :/
