Heavy Montréal - Will Go On Hiatus In 2017

Montreal concert promoter Evenko has announced that the Canadian metal festival Heavy Montréal will go on hiatus next summer, but will return on July 28th and 29th, 2018 at Parc Jean-Drapeau. Nick Farkas, vice-president of concerts and events at Evenko, said that Heavy Montréal was being cancelled in 2017 due to a number of factors, including the renovations that will be going on at Parc Jean-Drapeau and the fact that the summer of 2017 will have a busy schedule for other hard rock and metal shows in Montreal.

The announcement came two days after Evenko revealed that hard rock superstars Guns N' Roses will perform at Parc Jean-Drapeau on August 19th, just a couple of weeks after the time frame when Heavy Montréal has typically taken place.

"The fact that we're moving to a temporary site next year for Osheaga and ÎleSoniq (and for Heavy Montréal, if it was to happen), that weighed on us," Farkas told the Montreal Gazette. "This year, we thought we really hit on a really cool site and we want to be able to make sure that we can replicate something good going into 2018. And there's a ton of traffic (in the summer of 2017) in terms of metal and hard-rock stuff. We just thought, all signs point to taking a year off.

"We did it before. We took off 2009 when there was a lot of traffic, and came back stronger than ever in 2010. ... It's just a year off. It's a hiatus. Guns N' Roses is a huge deal, and there's other stuff that we're going to be announcing soon. The Heavy brand isn't going anywhere. We'll be doing Heavy-presented events this summer, and last year was a great year. So we're excited for the future."

Heavy Montréal was reduced from three to two days this year and was moved to a smaller site on Île Ste-Hélène. Evenko will also be holding Heavy In The City on July 27th, 2018, with shows at various venues around town.

Evenko ? the company behind the Heavy Montréal festival ? has announced that the event will be taking a break in 2020.

"It's not an easy decision to put one of our events on pause," says Jacques Aubé, chief operating officer of Evenko. "Several factors must be taken into consideration, including the number of non-festival metal/rock concerts that will be announced over the next few months."

Heavy Montréal will continue to offer a packed calendar of concerts throughout the city and the province all year round.

"We thank the fans for standing behind us," says Nick Farkas, senior vice-president of concerts and events at Evenko. "We're working hard to make sure we continue to offer the best metal/rock shows in the world! Heavy Montréal fans should not be worried!"

Heavy Montréal had its biggest year in 2014 when METALLICA headlined the event, with a blockbuster attendance of 75,000 over two days ? something Farkas described then as Heavy Montréal's "Eminem moment," according to the Montreal Gazette.

This past April, Montreal was officially recognized for its heavy metal scene when a motion to have it hailed as a "city of excellence" in heavy metal music received bipartisan support during a city council meeting.

Several well-known metal bands got their start in Montreal, including CRYPTOPSY and KATAKLYSM. The Quebec province's most famous heavy metal outfit, VOIVOD, is from Jonquière.

"Heavy metal has been an important part of Montreal's culture for many years. That the city recognizes it is fantastic," Farkas said.

That's a whole lot of talk for not providing any reason for the break. At least in 2017 they had renovations to blame. What's the reason now? "Lots of reasons" but here's a reminder that Cryptopsy and Katakylsm started here. Death metal Quebecois! Sounds like the focus is being put towards something else, namely those non-metal events being hosted.

Oh well, sucks for Montreal and for fans but hopefully the city doesn't get overlooked by those willing to tour Canada.

Its just a festival, you can catch unless you're in Yellow Knife or soemwhere there, because any international band always stops in Montreal, if they dont its like playing europe tour and missing Germany.
