The band comments: "We release this song to honor our beloved friends in the Katabatik community who died in the Ghost Ship fire. Wolves In The Throne Room was born in the mountains in celebration with these same brothers and sisters. I would encourage all people to check out the Katabatik record label and support their artists! Hails to Joey Casio and Barrett Clark. We love you and we miss you. Aaron & WITTR."

What the hell is going on with this band? This is very unimpressive, about as weak as the one they previously shared. I'm almost tempted to say that the band thought that after Celestite the best move would be to redeem themselves in the eyes of the fans who didn't like that album by going back to BM that's just very stripped down and lacks the nuance and layering of earlier. If this was another band, perhaps a younger one, something like this would probably be pretty excellent. But this is WITTR we're talking about. Things aren't looking too up for the new album in my book

HUGE step down from Celestial Lineage.

They took down the shields and no longer participating in making WITTR interesting. This is second most unimpressive work from Wolves.

And you base this on what? Because you don't like the new material? WITTR have never given the slightest apperance og being a band that gives too much thought into what the fans say (which is how Celestite came to be in the first place). Either they go for Celestite-like material and get the electics approval or they go back to BM and get called out by the eclectics.

Btw, I'm not particularly excited about these tracks either. I like them but I'm far from getting the wow factor. While I do think they are far from the level as the previous BM album (is it me or the vocals are pretty weak on this second track?), I also believe the fan's expectations made the songs sound worse.

You excluded the rest of that sentence you quoted and therefore it kinda lost its context. I didn't say "by going back to black metal" period, but black metal that's rather stripped down to more basic fundamentals and not as complex composition wise as former material. Black metal after Celestite was to be expected, but it actually being this weak after something like Celestial Lineage is a little surprising, that's all. You're right, saying that the band are pandering to their fanbase is a bit of a stretch, but it was more a momentary impression I got than anything else. Nevertheless, the method of going "back to basics" after a rather unconventional album isn't that unheard of for bands, so I don't think it's too much to say that's the idea here, even if WITTR are doing it entirely for themselves and no one else

I dont want to sound like total dickhead (I probably do ) but this is a genre that has seen a bit too many bands over the last couple of years. And as with any genre it will lose the appeal it had in the beginning. Making good music in this genre becomes harder, which is a good thing.

Not sure what genre is being talked about. Black metal in general, atmospheric bm, cascadian bm.

Sorry new computer. Didn't mean to hit enter. I am assuming atmospheric because there are a ton of great avant-garde bm bands still putting out new and exciting stuff. Cascadian is another thing altogether. Atmospheric minus two major bands has been hit or miss for the most part over the years anyway. The reason WITTR is WITTR (I think) is they put out 4 or 5 great albums in the genre. This album is obviously not going to be as atmospheric and sounds a little more cascadian influenced. Having said that these two songs are fairly disappointing. They are missing the mood that WITTR usually brings which is unrelated to the atmosphere and I thought was missing on Celestite as well. Their albums are usually better than a song out of context, although usually that song is awesome out of context and fantasticly awesome within context.
