Inquisition - Booted Out Of Season Of Mist, Release Statement

Season of Mist has just released a statement announcing that they are no longer working with Inquisition. In a short statement, the label simply said: "Season of Mist are no longer working with Inquisition. There will be no further statement." This has generated some speculation, with claims that it might have something to do with Dagon's criminal record or the accusations that Inquisition are associated with racist or white power leanings. Dagon has previously denied any Nazi association.

The strongest accusations came from Daniel Gallant, a rehabilitated white supremacist who claimed that Inquisition guitarist/vocalist Jason "Dagon" Weirbach and drummer Thomas "Incubus" Stevens, "loved the white power movement" and openly professed "admiration for Hitler" when he drove a tour bus the band traveled on several years ago.

He acknowledged that Daniel Gallant drove a tour bus for the band, but the story Dagon recounted is much different. According to Dagon, he did have a conversation about Gallant's Nazi tattoos, but it was due to curiosity rather than admiration. He also claimed that Antichrist Kramer is not a white supremacist and No Colours Records derived its name from the black and white color scheme the company used for their releases. On the subject of "Crush The Jewish Prophet," Dagon stated that the choice to include the word Jewish in the song title was for the sake of clarity as much as controversy.

Excerpts from Jason "Dagon" Weirbach 2014 interview to Decibel: "And yes, [my 88MM side project] is what people-to a certain degree-think, but it's not a white power, Nazi? nothing. I thought, 'Well, shit.' One day I was watching, I think it was a documentary or I was reading books, you know, on all kinds of old military weaponry, and thought, 'Whoa, 88 millimeter. Yeah. That's, like, perfect. It's like Mz.412's kind of style of name.' And it's a brutal name, you know? That's exactly what it was. I mean, yes, it did cross my mind [that the number 88 has gone onto have significance in the neo-Nazi community in terms of a code for a 'Heil Hitler']. I thought, 'Oh shit,' about the 88 thing and what are people gonna think. And I thought, when it comes? I'm a purist in art, man, and I thought, 'Well, I'm not gonna just cancel the idea because a few people might think, 'Oh wait, that might be?' No. Because it's 88 millimeter."

About working with cover artist Antichrist Kramer: "And I'll repeat it: He is not a white supremacist. He has worked with Nyogthaeblisz, which is a Mexican-American black metal somewhat noise project. They're not noise, but it's a very extreme black metal. He works with Black Witchery, where the singer is half-Colombian like myself. He's great friends with them. Uh, he was friends with Blasphemy. Blasphemy has an African-American, we all know about him, the guitar player, he's a great guy. And I mean, you know, he's not a white supremacist. What bothers me is that you can tell people all you want about Kramer not being white supremacist-they don't want to believe it. Because they think that some white supremacists have the ability to be friends with other racists, but still have their own beliefs. But that's not truly white supremacy, man. It is not."

In related news, MetalSucks is also reporting today that Inquisition frontman Dagon has plead guilty to child pornography charges in 2009, according to official documents from the Superior Court of Washington for Snohomish County.

The documents, which are a matter of public record, state that NCMEC (the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) became aware of an account uploading sexually explicit photographs of "young females in their early teens or pre-teens" in November of 2006.

Weirbach was charged with Possession of Depictions of a Minor Engaged in Sexually Explicit Conduct in December of 2008; in June of 2009, his attorney was able to strike a bargain with prosecutors, whereupon Weirbach plead guilty to Unlawful Display of Sexually Explicit Material and Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer. In exchange, the prosecutor recommended thirty days in jail with credit for time already served, roughly $1,000 in fines, and two years of probation, which included limited access to the Internet as well as counseling.

MetalSucks say that they reached out to Season of Mist for comment on the child pornography charges yesterday morning, and were told in the afternoon that the label is no longer working with the band.

In response to the above, Dagon released the following statement on Inquisition's Facebook page:

"To all fans, supporters and close ones, I would like to clarify some horrific misinformation generated by the webzine Metalsucks of a personal matter of mine in 2007: First you must take into account, everything Metalsucks published is taken from court documents that state charges and accusations rather than what was proven or admitted in 2007. Second, I never plead guilty to the charges and the original charges were dropped after the courts examined all evidence. I am not a sex offender, and I was absolutely innocent of all charges. The plea bargain was something the prosecutor insisted on and for the defense was the best option to end a lengthy legal process. Also, the background check webpage circulating is not entirely correct, it is definitely not showing what the Police background check would show you. With my fullest respect to you, please read my statement Metalsucks had told me they would publish:

"I made a very unwise choice of actions in 2007 which got me into some legal problems. After the investigation was conducted, a year and a half later after the initial charges, the original charges brought against me were dropped and a plea deal was presented to me. The investigation determined I did not have anything that fell under the original charge.

"The police report suggested I had deleted and obstructed evidence which I deny to have done, however the obstruction charge was still part of the plea deal as was the other charge mentioned in this article. That second charge is related to viewing pornography in a public area, and again was taken as part of the plea deal. To be clear, I have no sex crimes, this did not involve any other person other than myself and I have moved forward since 2009 while having complied with all aspects of the law.

"I wish to remain focused on my music and my absolute dedication to the art of Black Metal. Despite any personal views and judgments the followers and supporters of our music may have, I am a somewhat private person and have never cared for destructive sensationalism and keeping what I feel is private, private.

"I hope my level of transparency is understood and I thank you, as always for having been so supportive of Inquisition. With much respect to you, Dagon."

Update March 28, 2018:

Inquisition has now been dropped off from the line-up for this year's Maryland Deathfest. The band also made the following statement in regards to the upcoming tour with Satyricon:

"Inquisition extends its appreciation to all fans and individuals who have supported us throughtout its career. A thank you will never be enough to express our level of regard to you.

Inquisition has been dropped from the Satyricon tour.

Inquisition will continue; in the mean time we respect everyone's position and will allow time to control the chaos over its own horizons into its own order.

Once again our greatest level of appreciation to you."

Most of the info that's been released about black metal bands and their political leanings is true, regardless of the original investigation being part of a ideological witch hunt of sorts. The question is whether certain BM artists' stupid behaviours is enough to turn people away from listening to their music.

I haven't compiled a list of cases to be able to say if it always true or not, but many of the accusations were often baseless (Marduk, Bölzer, Watain or even WITTR a few years back....). If it is completely justified, be my guest. If it is not, I start to doubt the real motivation behind it. That is were the problem lies.
You see, regarding people turning away of an artist's music for their behaviour, I could not care less. People are free to listen and support whatever the fuck they want. Who am I to judge?
What I don't think should be tolerated is to ban or ruin someone's else fun because certain people want to decide for you what is deemed acceptable or not.
This is what happens when these kind of bands are forced to cancel their shows. If the bands/artists are really a danger and committed condemnable crimes, we have a judicial system (albeit not the best) to take care of that. If they did not, just move along, ignore them if required and let everyone live as they please.
But nowadays, this appears not to be enough. Now it all has to go beyond that and even if you did your time or didn't even do anything worthy of prosecution, it may be motive to ruin your career because people with no authority whatsoever decided that from their point of view, it should be so and will take action to ensure it is the case.

This is problematic.

Even though this whole Antifa thing has completely blown out of proportion and these people are indeed as braindead as the neo-nazis, I believe you can see the irony when NSBM bands complain about things like the right to free speech and artistic freedom, don't you? I mean those supporting that supremacy crap (white, purple or whatever), should be prepared to have their lives and careers fucked over by those who have the power; if it's Antifa that has the power now, tough luck.

It's not Antifa that started the witch hunt in the first place. You reap what you sow.

Btw, I am not going to throw away my Inquisition cds or anything, but this pedo shit is too disturbing for me and I was shocked by the -apparently "old"- news and I consider myself to be the exact opposite of PC assholes and SJWs.

Of course, I can see how NSBM are in a bad spot. Not that I care that much for them. And although I think everyone should be able to express whatever opinion they want (yes, any) as long as it has no physical repercusions, I do expect both sides of a same coin (so if you pit garbage like NS and Antifa) to always struggle against each other (some still think they live in the 40', sad people).

But none of the mentionned bands on my posts are NSBM, yet get the treatment anyway and are dragged into these banal squabbles between people who are most likely deranged in their heads and think they can overstretch their influence to people who don't give a flying fuck. I just don't like that.

Malignar

I don't think his career should be ruined due to what I've read. Maybe I'm missing the part where he distributed underage porn to people...but I don't see that part. I also don't think we aren't getting the full story here. If we are getting the full story, the people that are dropping him are running scared.

Just hearing about this now thanks to a conversation in the shoutbox. His denial of the CP allegations seems flimsy at best. I hope for his sake he got proper help and didn't actively engage with anyone underage, though his download history isn't exactly something to be proud of.

I feel bad having purchased one of their albums recently but I'm hoping most of the money went to the label instead of the band in this instance. I still enjoy their music but will definitely avoid supporting them financially in the future.

As for the white supremacist stuff... that's just shit shavings on a diarrhea sandwich.
