Enslaved - Drummer Cato Bekkevold Quits The Band

Enslaved's drummer since 2003, Cato Bekkevold is calling it quits. He would like to spend more time with his daughter, and he is not perfect physically for drumming in the band anymore. His last show will be at Hellfest 2018 in France. The band has not announced a replacement yet, but Cato mentioned Iver Sandøy as a future drummer in his video announcing his retirement.

In other news, Enslaved also announced a European co-headlining tour with High On Fire for September and October. Tickets go on sale today June 21st.

This is a bummer. As a big fan of the band and a fellow drummer, I really admired Cato's playing a lot. Glad I got to see him live with the band a handful of times.

Cato is a fantastic drummer and I really appreciated his work with Enslaved. Hope that he enjoys his time with his daughter and that the fish are biting.

This is sure to be a big blow to Ivar and Grutle. They have often said in interviews that finding Cato was a huge influence on the positive direction of the band.

Good luck to Cato and his family. Have seen him live a couple of times and met him once. Fantastic drummer and a funny guy. Great contribution to Enslaved. Will be missed but he is making the right decision for himself and his family.

Very sad to see him go. I hope he makes the most of his retirement.

Agreed. Though when he joined, they were transitioning from a more standard viking/black metal outfit to what they are now. I would think with an established sound, they could find a drummer that fits their needs. Much like they did with the new keyboardist.

I hope. But really, 15 years is a long time to keep a job, haha.

More of a blow to morale than to the musical direction. Cato brought stability and quiet competence at the back.

There again, Ivar Sandøy is a long-time collaborator, so that must make the transition easier.

Sad news indeed. At Hellfest they asked us to cheer for him, something we certainly did!
