Nightwish - New Album In The Works, Drummer Jukka Nevalainen Quits

Nightwish have announced that they are working on their ninth studio album, scheduled for 2020 release. At the same time, a statement from long-time drummer Jukka Nevalainen has been posted, revealing news of his departure. In 2014 Jukka decided to stop all live and studio activities due insomnia problems. Currently, he has barely any issues to deal with, however, he decided to step down and leave the band. Current live drummer Kai Hahto will step in.

Statement from Jukka Nevalainen: "It has now been five years since my difficult decision, due to severe insomnia, to step aside from the Vehicle of Spirit of Nightwish. This included the previous studio album and the tours which followed.

"As I then expected, it turned out to be the right thing to do. These days I'm doing fantastic, and hardly ever need to deal with any sleeping issues. It also dawned on me that having more time to merely focus on band - related things happening behind the curtains made all the difference.

"Having said this, I have decided not to push my luck by returning to the band. My dear pal Kai Hahto will take my place as a full-time member of the band. I will continue to take care of the band's businesses in the background, and I'm very much looking forward to what other adventures life has to offer!

"My sincere thank you's for the band and the fans for the glorious time we shared!"

All I could think about that Kai won't be a part of Wintersun anymore

It was the expected decision from Jukka. Happy that he's doing better, and the drums will be in good hands as well.

He will be missed. But the important thing is of course that he's feeling better.

Don't think you should worry, Jari is probably working on the next ten sequels to The Forest Seasons so the record company won't bug him about releasing Time II in this millenia, so I think Kai have TIME for both bands ^^

I think this is a stupid and hasted decision, I understand where he is coming from but to put a line in the sand like that? No I do not accept and I do not believe.
An artist with such a presence on stage, he's like a fictional character the way he plays the drums, he's like an actor in his prime element.
I do wonder though if this means he won't creat music with Nightwish anymore, at all, I really hope that's not the case.
Personally I think he should do a few shows here and there if and when he feels like it, I also think he should step in for a few shows if Kai gets sick or his schedule with Wintersun clashes with Nightwish, really hope he does if that happens.
I respect his decisions but I don't accept he won't sit behind the drums of a Nightwish show anymore.
Do like Matt Barlow and make a few exceptions here and there won't you Jukka?

Wow, what a stupid and hasted judgement you've made.

This is a decision that's been 5 years in contemplation, hardly hasty... The guy's insomnia was being exacerbated by the pressure/anxiety and necessary terrible circadian schedule of touring... Its a shame and a loss that I'm sure eats at his soul way more than it does yours so cut him some slack.

Trust me that no one wants to give up their passion because of health reasons but when it continues to fail despite trying alternatives one must concede to nature. Despite human delusions we can't conquer nature and if we do it is temporary, nature always wins in the end which is evident by the inevitable demise of death.

In case you've forgotten I'll leave you with a quote from his first statement on the matter:
"On a personal level, my decision [to leave the band] obviously feels indescribably sad. Fortunately, looking at it with some distance, it is "just" part of the constant, inevitable ebb and flow of life." - Jukka 2014

Kai can play Nightwish songs with one arm in his back and both eyes shut, not a challenge for him.

On the other hand, Wintersun doesn't release material very often.

That's the key point. In the quality of someone who had exactly this situation (giving up a passion cause of health issues), I can say you are exactly right and people should be more empathic with those kind of terrible yet necessary decisions.

You're absolutely right, I'll be more careful in future posts, my comment on this was very hasted and not thought through.
This guy is a idol for me, a man I respect and admire so that was very uncold for.

I knew this was coming just like everyone else, would probably have made the same decision.
For some reason I was expecting him going middle ground and make some exceptions, doing a few shows here and there and take part of the studio recordings etc.
Of course that would be a dick move to Kai so giving him the spot and thus more creative freeedom as a result was probably the right decision.
I don't know if Jukka will meddle on any level with the actually creation of the next opus but from my understanding he probably won't.
But I do have to say..everyone probably knew the end result 5 years ago, but for Kai to sitt behind the drums for all those years ready to walk away if Jukka should return is bloddy admirable.
Realy looking forward to hear his contribution on the new record 🤘

I know where he is coming from because I've had similar issues, of course that's chickenpox in comparison so no I'm not.
Being part of a band on a scale like Nightwish is no small feat, I don't think people can fathom the pressure and responsibility such an jobb throws at you.
The fact Jukka has ben part of the band for so many years with the kind of issues he has just shows how devoted he's been.
Most people would have broken down a long time ago.

That's totally fair and that you see where he's coming from. It's pretty much like a blow to see him stepping down permanently given how many years he's devoted to the band and how much a fixture he's been but it's at least for the better (for him at least).

No, Jukka will not quit the band. He will remain as a background member like a co-tour manager.

This is a great shame. I think Kai, amazing as he is, does not exactly fit Nightwish, which Jukka was a perfect part of. Plus I love Wintersun, where imo Kai 'belongs'.

But I very much understand the decision and Jukka was very right to make it.
