Hmm... IMO they're not the band of the year, Dark Passion Play is not the best Metal album/album of the year, Amaranth is surely not the song of the year and they're not the best Finnish artist... but I guess they'll still win several prices that day.
Ellrohir - 23.01.2008 at 15:01
as i could see, both of these awards are more into general music genres like rock and pop than specially into metal...NW especially with Amaranth made the hit into "mainstream" waters and this is their reward

So Amaranth is more mainstream than Nemo?
Heck, all metal is mainstream in Finland. Even if In Flames did a huge sucess they would not be nominated for a Swedish Grammy as the best band, for example. That only works in Finland because metal is so big there, I'm sure that half of the population listens to metal.

I sure think that they deserve the last award, and also nominations for the rest of them. Dark Passion Play is very professional and good.
selken - 23.01.2008 at 16:05
If half of the people listens to metal, why Ensiferum, Korpiklaani, Moonsorrow aren't even nominated?
Talvi - 23.01.2008 at 16:18
Well, at least as a mainstream metal band, they surely not suck.
Stigma - 23.01.2008 at 16:56
Certain metal styles have become mainstream in Finland yes. But an average finn doesn't tend to like growling or really heavy bands. Besides there are many metal bands who sing in finnish that are way more popular than Ensiferum or Turisas for ex.
If you're looking for a metal band that is mainstream here, it's either Metallica, or some heavy/power metal band like Sturm Und Drang or Kotipelto..

Haha, bad example with In Flames there xD As they've already have won a Grammy xD The award called "Regeringens Exportpris"!

i´d say it is quite the same...i dont like Nemo too much either and Wish I Had An Angel as well, but it has at least quite nice video...

I have nothing against "mainstream" tracks as long as their good And I don't really think Nightwish changed their sound in a mainstream direction with any album, I think the music they play are pretty easy-acessed from the beginning.
insanity.peppers - 23.01.2008 at 21:42
Yay they deserve it!
Piro - 23.01.2008 at 22:49
Metal Should Stay Underground!

hehe, thats the eltist in me speaking, still, I don't think that these were particularly great songs/albums from Nightwish, but I guess it was quite mainstream, even over here some people were listening to Nightwish for awhile...

Still, I wish them luck, because overall they are a good band and they deserve it.
Ellrohir - 24.01.2008 at 00:21
i dont think metal should stay underground, but it definitely had to stay metal...

it's like new Within Temptation - it is cool they made music which is successful even in "mainstream" charts...but the prize? it sounds like Evanescence or something and not like metal anymore...Amaranth is quite the same - it is practically the "least metal" song on the Dark Passion Play...though they release it as a single and made a clip for it...another example is Lost In Space by Avantasia - the most "poppy" song on the album and voila - a video made and released for it...

Yes, and in my opinion they gained mainstream status here already with Oceanborn album. I remember the time when some average joes I knew were suddenly very fond of their music. They're the kind of guys who don't even listen to music normally. I think in general Stratovarius and Nightwish were those bands who brought the metal music to the charts, and Lordi of course. Now they even make some stupid tv-shows about teaching people to play rock music who don't have any idea of it, and the latest thing where they teach over 70 year old people to sing in a rock choir or sumthing.

Just a basic music awards.
ANGEL REAPER - 25.01.2008 at 09:24
Come on guys!!!!!All that awards for nothing! Why they not listening to fans worldwide? They were better with Tarja, and now they are way below the fame that they used to have...So bring the Tarja back,or retire for ever!!!

But they still deserve it, because they absolutely represent a Heavy Metal legends
Ellrohir - 25.01.2008 at 12:54
heavy metal legends Nightwish

man, come on, wake up...

and about the fans - i´d say, they maybe lost about 1/3 of so-called fans, but the rest is confident with Anette and there are even many new fans who are discovering NW now thanks to Anette
monowasp - 25.01.2008 at 15:13
I don't think they should get smacked up on medals, not yet, they need more miles to travel before that happens...

Name any Nightwish release that is NOT mainstream...
Ellrohir - 27.01.2008 at 14:12
Sleeping Sun
headbang vol.99 - 27.01.2008 at 15:03
You're joking right? 'Eva' is practically the same exact song. There are the drums, guitars, a guitar solo and keys. Next please.
Though actually there would be no point, because I think most of power metal is basically mainstream. I think I have the definition wrong btw, I define mainstream music by "easy listening".
Ellrohir - 27.01.2008 at 15:04
well if you keep Sleeping Sun as "mainstream", then it is hard to discuss with you...
headbang vol.99 - 27.01.2008 at 15:07
You can try to say WHY it's not. How is it different from Eva? You just named a song without any type of explanation, that's not how you protect a point....
Ellrohir - 27.01.2008 at 15:49
i am afraid i can´t tell the exact reason...i simply feel it so...i'd be agreed when you say Amaranth, Eva, Nemo or Wish I Had An Angel is "mainstream commercial", but i think Sleeping Sun is different from those

but when you dont agree with Sleeping Sun...what about Bless the Child, Ever Dream or Deep Silent Complete singles ? again "mainstream"? then whole NW music is "mainstream"...

That's basically what I meant, yep.

You do know that Nightwish became one the most famous bands in the world with the songs created with Tarja on the vocals, right? They had fans of many age groups, and from many different musical backgrounds. How is that possible when a band isn't mainstream? Vader doesn't have 14 year old pop fans jumping and screaming in the shows, Nightwish has had those people for quite a few years already.
Tuomas is the one who comes up with the songs and he said that the music is still the same on Dark Passion Play as it has been on the older records (and I agree with that. Just listen to Slaying the Dreamer and try say that the songs on Dark Passion Play follow a horribly different buildup), the only difference is that the classical singing is gone. That obviously wasn't an obstacle between gaining fame, more like it helped them along.
