Nightwish - Win ECHO And Emma Award

Nightwish were awarded an "ECHO" as band of the year in the category "rock/alternative (international)". The other nominees in that category were Foo Fighters, Kaiser Chiefs, Marilyn Manson and Within Temptation. The ECHO Music Awards were held Friday night (February 15) in Berlin, Germany. ECHO is a German music award granted every year by the Deutsche Phono-Akademie (an association of recording companies). Nightwish performed the song "Amaranth".

UPDATED on 9 March:

At the annual Emma Awards (Finnish Grammy), Nightwish won awards in four of the six nominated categories. The jury awarded Nightwish Emma awards in the following categories: "Album Of The Year", "Metal Album Of The Year", "Band Of The Year" and "Best Selling Album 2007".

Please explain yourself. I don't see what the shame is.

From Once to Dark Passion Play, from Tarja to Anette, to MTV, to Within Temptation, to commercial international awards, is this Nightwish?

Yes it is imo. Their music always already had a very mainstream appeal from their debut till now. And IMO there is nothing wrong with commercial internation awards for that gives a band more exposure.

I don't have problems with these awards but the problem is with the band itself.
It seems like it surely wants to get to where it's heading now (global fame/more money) and that's sad.
I wish we could have got a great Nightwish album with the LPO and Tarja in 2007 instead of the more mainstream-oriented DPP, with all my respects. After all, they still have numerous fans out there, perhaps more than ever but I'm sure they lost a lot of them... Still I wish them the very best.

Lol. Go dig yourself a hole and put your head in it if you so desperately want to be underground...

This Award means Nightwish are a big name also outside the metal world these days. This Award means Nightwish have worldwide fame and glory. This Award above all means Nightwish have a huge commercial success and people apparently feel an urge to honour Nightwish for that by throwing Awards at them. In a few weeks the Emma Gaala Awards (the equivalent of the Grammy Awards in Finland) and Nightwish are nominated in five categories...
I think you'll just have to face those facts. Besides Nightwish have been successful in the mainstream commerial music industry for several years now (also with Tarja), so don't tell me you didn't see it coming.

Yes, maybe they're selling out, but an Award can never be considered to be a shame for a band (unless it's an Award for biggest letdown of the year of course). After all, they did work for it right?

And if you don't like it, you're always have your hole

I have to congratulate Nightwish, although DPP doesn't amazed me so much, but I see this as a very good

I'm glad the little minds of non-metal people get a spot for some bands, that's great. This is a very important bridge between underground and mainstream metal, Metallica was my bridge, and Nightwish could be someone's else.

Who cares if they want commercial success??? they deserve it!! who cares if they want to "sell out" and those stupid tags!!. I think the label "sold out" was product of the envy of the unsuccessful artists towards the ones which are successful.

no it's not sad, is just they're musicians, that's their job, that's the way they get their food!, and in your job, you must look for opportunities to grow, to reach a better life level. If you have a job you would understand this point of view.

Good on them. They're getting commercial success because they deserve it. Unlike most bands (CoB and In Flames) Nightwish haven't compromised their sound to achieve such recognition. If anything they've become better.

well this is always a problem...band can only be good and show self, when it is famous among people...but often when they became "popular" too much, it can turned wrong, because they can start making music just for money, not for expressing themselves anymore...i'd say Iron Maiden are great example of a band, where popularity doesnt matter at all and they are still making great music and Metallica is for me the band, where money exceeded quality...

imo NW are currently balancing on a narrow bridge over the abyss...they are now on top - they are back, they are popular, they are running very successful tour, even receiving awards..but well - the "spirit" of DPP really isnt that as on Oceanborn or Wishmaster...i think everything will show up with their next release (but proclaimed 2010, according to one Marco's interview in Australia, so quite a long time) - there will we see

let me tell you something, guys...
since i'm from croatia, i always thought that nightwish is finland and finland is nightwish - somehow life gave me an opportunity to go there and just then i realized it's all one big crap.
even the kids don't listen to nightwish, but tarja is very much respected (at least in finland), so i'm saying that THEY won't last long, but SHE surely will (both commercial or not)!!!

Bullshit.. :p i know Nightwish for several years now..and i will see them live for the very first time in March(Because i could go few years back because my parents wouldn't let me, 'to young' they said back then)But in the years i know this band i come to the conclusion that they are a band that actually create good music, but over the years i've come more into the harsh metal thing(Thrash, Groove, Death, en also Grindcore and variations)but i'm not saying that Nightwish are a bunch of fuck ups no..not at all Nightwish is a band that deserves this, they have really worked hard to achieve all that they have right now(not many bands can say that)and i still listen sometimes to NW to just calm down and relex :p

Well, at least they are NOT a mainstream band. Come on, Dark Passion Play it's a lot more complicated and has a richer sound that most of the average metal bands, so please, shut the fuck up.

What's wrong in selling something? The fact that it sells a lot doesn't mean the music itself is bad or mainstream. Get it?

they are not "mainstream" - yet...but with another album like DPP and another songs like Eva or Amaranth, i am afraid they will be i am a huge fan of them (and a fan of Tuomas and i dont like Tarja as a person (yes, she is skilled singer and NW songs performed by her will be immortal)) you cant even imagine, but i am really worried about their future

I don't see where's the problem, it was clearly that nightwish died the moment tarja left. Now they are just a shadow of what they used to be... and i must say a very famous and greedy shadow. Anyway, good for them, i really hope that they make tons of money, the ultimate goal of 99.9% of all bands.

I personally think that it doesn't matter if Nightwish is now more "commercial" or "international". They are talented without doubt. And the fact that they won a commercial international award even proves their talent. Great bands don't need to be underground famous only.

Congratulations, Nightwish.

I cant believe people are saying that nightwish will not last without tarja and that they are generally worried about their future....they have not changed that much you know....and if you havent noticed shit loads of people go to their concerts still, if not more now actually than before....
they will be around for a while....and nightwish is tuomas!!! and definitely not tarja by any means (though a really good voice)...
and to get back to the point of the news....good for them about the award!

The news isn't either surprising or disturbing. Nightwish always were mainstream and DPP is a great album, so it's no wonder they got awarded by mainstream media. Stop making a fuss about it. If your favourite bands need to be underground, you always can just stop listening to "sellouts" and dig out another crappy unknown (for a reason) band in their place. It;'s that simple.

Like Marcel and some others have said, Nightwish has always had a tendency towards mainstream, so it's not surprising at all that they are getting awarded.

The people who are saying that Nightwish won't last without Tarja obviously don't really know much about Nightwish. The band wasn't going to last WITH Tarja either. It was either sack Tarja and get a new singer, or disband all together.

I don't think that they are selling out and it's not just about making money for them. Yes, they need to in order to keep creating music, but don't the songs "Bye Bye Beautiful" and "Master Passion Greed" clearly prove that it isn't about the money? It's about the music and the emotions behind it.

Get over it, Nightwish are here to stay for a while yet. Tarja is gone and Anette is here. Personally, I like Anette as the new front woman. Tarja thought she was the be-all and end-all of Nightwish, wasn't she wrong. Good riddance to Tarja. I love her voice, I don't like her as a person and how she perceives herself though.

What I like best about NW's music is the brilliantly composed instrumental parts, mostly by Tuomas. I like other members even more than Tarja or Anette. As long as Tuomas, Jukka, Macro and Emppu stay and continue to do such great works, NW is still one of my favorite.
