probally the youngest metal genre now, very underground in the early 90ties but starts to grow fast now mostly thanks to the finnish folk metal bands we all know:
Finntroll
Moonsorrow
Ensiferum

but I want to know how many people here actually know of folk metal and what they think of it.

list of various folk metal:

Skyclad
Mael Mórdha

German folk metal:

Dalriada
Shambless

lyrics in native language damn its so hard to write, much esyer are do it in english

I agree with you, it's hard to write lyris for folk metal(or even metal in general) in your own language, without making it sound rediculous. Also, when you write in your own language, it's so damn hard to make the myths, folklore and/or attitude justice.

I agree i cant write nothing in latvainh thats why all my poetry are in english, but IMO in other langauges all sounds easyer, well like sad somebody :''In naibours yard grass are greener''

Though, when you finely get it right, it's worth it. One such band, IMO, is Vintersorg. Even if their english lyrics are wellwritten, they can't compete with their swedish onces.

Btw, do you know any latvian folk metal bands?

Well the folk that I'm familiar with, is Oriental\Arabic\Middle-Eastern, like Melechesh, Arkan, Myrath, Orphaned Land, and many others...

I also like some German Folk like Gevolt, Feuerschwanz, Falkenbach, In Extremo, Saltatio Mortis, Cumulo Nimbus, Schandmaul, Stille Volk, and some others... Any recommendations would be great.

He is just getting into metal, so recommending big-name bands is all he can do until he really starts to dig into the underground like the rest of us.

Folk, Extreme Folk, and pagan metal are my top 3 genres. I've been writing lyrics for a folkish/pagan album and I'm from the United States. It has a little bit of Norse mythology in there mixed with some United states history. Sorry, I don't feel like having an Indian gimmick. Good music will be good music.

Like, more of a modern sounding trad. folk album?

sweet. Im def. gonna take some serious time looking into this.
Right now im checking out Kauan by a band called Tenhi...sounds very similar to Borknagars' Origin.
I also got an album by a group called Wardruna, album is called Yggdrasil. Sounded very neo folky to me, so I bought it blindly based off of a few previews. It was reccomended because I like Finntroll and Arkona (thanks Amazon)

I personally like japanese/chinese extreme folk metal the most.
Stuff like Tengger Cavalry, Quest for Blood, Shangren (although they are australian), even Ego Fall, or Whispered.
However I don't know many bands, if someone who knows more about the asian folk scene, I'd love to hear recommendations (:

Another folk that I like is south-american/ andean folk metal, like Chaska, Guahaihoque, Tenochtitlan,...
