By that I mean only the really old school death/doom and basically the founders of the sub genre. Bands such as: Winter, Sempiternal Deathreign, Cianide, Paradise Lost, diSEMBOWELMENT etc. are the first bands that comes to my mind (alongside the very early MDB).

man, reading your post i could think that it was written by me! old school death/doom is a truly unknown sub-genre but one of my fav.
Decomposed, Cianide, Winter, diSEMBOWELMENT, Delirium, Sempiternal Deathreign, Asphyx, all the brutal stuff free from all that dark-romatic crap that my dying bride etc.. is playing today!
Nice avatar
some other bands i recommend are:
Absurd Existence, Ceremonium, Pentacrostic and the christian, but yet awesome band Paramaecium.
edit: and befor i forget, a KVLT swedish death/doom band, ETERNAL DARKNESS! raw as hell
oh and befor i forget, beyond belief! awesome stuff!

man the list is endless!
Cool man, it seems you know your shit
Its cool you also mentioned Asphyx because I think its a band that everyone know only as a death metal band but there is no doubt that their early releases had some very obvious doom metal elements in it. STILL, I wouldnt say those elements was strong enough to call it death/doom and I think its still more death metal than doom, but there is doom in it for sure and it was some really great music (Asphyx is also one of my favourite death metal bands).
Decomposed I listened to waay long ago. They remind me a lot of Sempiternal Deathreign, but even more death metalish than them IMO.

yeah about that doom influence, i think it's the same with the first two Autopsy albums. i don't consider severed surivival and mental funeral death/doom, but both albums have a high doom influence which shouldn't be overlooked..
I really like the very first realses by Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride [especially the first cd "As The Flower Withers"
Great stuff.. very disturbing.
I feel like I can'ty breath very well when I hear those old albums... the production is so raw [in a good way] that makes all so dark.

Hmmm, but there is a big big difference between death metal bands with some doom elements (like those in your thread) with death/doom metal. Here we discuss doom metal

Yummy My Dying Bride and Reverend Doom.
Old Katatonia is great. Great band to see live, along with Swallow The Sun and Insomnium.
As for old school death, I just saw Deathfest 7 hit town this past weekend featuring Funerus and Incantation with a local death act from here called Deamon. Incredibly show and incredible people.

Our fortress is burning against the grain of the shattered sky...
Tell me about it...There are a number of bands I wish I could've seen and would've done anything to have seen..
Especially if I had been a teenage in the late 70s and throughout the 80s.
