Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2009

Location: Germany, Wacken (Festivalgelände)
Date: 29 July 2009 - 01 August 2009
Website: wacken.com
Organizer: ICS Event Service

Tickets:

SOLD OUT!!

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

I don't know what's going on here, but what is a country/rockabilly band doing in the Wacken line-up? Ah well, it isn't such a suprise after Bring Me The Horizon.

Well, they do cover metal songs, so that is the reason I would say, Some light entertainment.

No one complains about Mambo Kurt, so what's wrong with The BossHoss? Unlike Mambo they do have some musical qualities after all.

Oh, and just for the record. Of the five bands I've already mentioned two months ago, three have been confirmed by now (ETHS, Retrospect, Bai Bang). So I guess it isn't really unlikely that Sonic Syndicate gonna be there as well.

Written by Promonex on 14.03.2009 at 16:56

According to them Sonic Syndicate, ETHS, Breed77, Bai Bang (which wouldn't even be all that bad) and Retrospect are confirmed as well. I don't know the sources of those claims though.

Nervecell, The Fading and Insidious Disease are the only good bands they announced I guess.
Saying it's getting worse ain't very kind Let's say it's not getting a lot better
Announcing some small bands ain't that bad either, since Feuerschwanz and Rabenschrey should (if everything goes as planned) play on the medieval market.
As for the PUNK bands..................... I simply won't go to their shows
My back can't take more than 7-8 a day so announcing some crap is a great idea

By the way Kamelot and Ensiferum were mentioned in the Wacken-news, which means that they COULD be announced (yes I said COULD)

also the Sani-Metal toilets are also sold out! wtf i wouldn't pay 120 euros to use my own toilet for 3 days if it was made of solid gold.

are the public toilets THAT intimidating?

Both played in WOA 2008. It'd really surprise me if they suddenly booked bands twice in two years.

Most of the time it's a group of people getting those toilets. If you and 14 mates share one, it's 8 bucks per person. Especially for girls, who can't really use the next bush or tree like we can and depend on the public toilets, it's a convenient solution.

Food ranges from awful to quite good I'd say. But you can leave the whole concept of cheap right at home when you're about to enter Wacken No seriously, their beer pricing comes directly from hell. But the local Edeka department store offers a wide range of meat and small BBQ's for acceptable prices. And the village folks is pretty cool when it comes to eating and you have enough time between two bands to walk off the woa ground.

As corrupt said the food quality varies, but I didn't get anything bad last year. The price of beer is cheap, but that because I compare it to prices in Denmark and compared to Germany in general it's probably not cheap.

I don't think that you'll have problems with eating and drinking You'll find Hotdog, Chinese food, Kebabs (Döner for the Germans) and many many other things to eat. I suggest taking a small tour through the eating stands on the first day and mark the places with the food you like. As for drinking, there's the beergarden and beer and met stands pretty much everywhere Small tip, collect the plastic glasses that lie on the floor, since you get money for turning those in
Then there is the village, which is 5-15 minutes away (depends on where your tent is) which has 3 supermarkets, where you can buy some Wacken beer cans as well as BBQ stuff if you want
Then last suggestion only works if you have a car there's a Burgerking not that far away for which you should have gotten some tickets with your WOA ticket.

So there is always something to eat and drink it only depends on what you really want. Btw if you come by car take some stuff from home, because the other 80k people won't wait to buy stuff in the village

If you have some more questions send me a message

I thought so... that's why I warned. The Chilean has only released some demos and singles and a live album. They reunited some time ago and have a high cult status but that's it.

Pretty glad that they're announced. Their demo's are really great. Definitely a band worth checking out.

Hahaha, I bet they wanted to get the American one and mixed them up. Wouldn't be the first time.

Won't surprise me either, LOL. But the American Pentagram are a huge liability with Bobby Liebling's helath and addictions. But of course the Chilean Pentagram is toruing through europe at the time and the tour is organised by Doomdealer/Church Within which is a German label.
