Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2009

Location: Germany, Wacken (Festivalgelände)
Date: 29 July 2009 - 01 August 2009
Website: wacken.com
Organizer: ICS Event Service

Tickets:

SOLD OUT!!

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

running order published... i'll be the guy singing all the Priest and Saxon songs after Mambo Kurt

Yay, now I can't see even half of what I planned. There's hardly any band on my list that doesn't play parallel to another one. Nothing of interest on thursday but one day later Saxon, Machine Head and Enslaved in parallel. What the hell? If this is how they plan the fest, it'll be my least active in all time. This is so frustrating..

Saxon and Machine Head won't play head to head, remember the 2 main stages are one next to the other, so when there's a band on the True stage, the band that's due next is making sound checks on the Black stage, so you'll see Machine Head right before Saxon unfortunately the WET and Party stages collide with the main stages, from what i've gathered. i'm waiting for the hour-based program before i give my full opinion though ^^

Hey people you know what's going on at the medieval market? i see they organize highland games and role playing and whatnot, but do they also sell cool stuff like model weapons/cool medieval-related shit and the likes?

Most probably, and then also the fact they added a medieval market where you can also roleplay. My God what the hell is this world coming to? What's next? A Star Trek convention and Star Wars gathering at Wacken 2010? FFS this has nothing to do with muisc whatsover. Might as well add a horror film convention cause a lot of people who like metal also like horror etc etc.

And this is their special 20th anniversary edition? Btw I just realised that Waldrock (a metal fest in the north of The Netherlands) is already hosting its 22nd edition this year. That fest is most probably the world's longest running (uninterrupted) metal festival in the world.

Motörhead
Hammerfall
Nevermore
Gamma Ray
Dragonforce
Whiplash
Saxon
Axel Rudi Pell
Testament
Rage
Enslaved
Napalm Death

Are these not decent bands?
Come on, things have changed, but there are still enough good bands to entertain through the three days.

Just 16 band is NOT a good scoe, and you even dared to call DragonFarce goo? My God. And of the 16 you just jotted down almost have played Wacken at least a couple of time during the last couple of years... so that IS CRAP

Haha, well they are my personal favourites.
And yeh, most of them will have played Wacken, and many other festivals many times before - but these days I can't go to a festival where I haven't seen any of the bands, so it is to be expected that I am seeing bands I have seen many times before.
To me they are good bands, and I am sure I will have a good time there. At the end of the day all we want is a good time, right?

Anyway, if it isn't great, I'll let you know in the review! Haha.

When I say festival I mean Open Air festival. Download, Bloodstock, Hellfest, Graspop, Wacken, Summer Breeze, Metal Camp, wherever else, they all have the same bands over the years really. I've seen most of them all before.

Yet there are so many festivals where you (and I) haven't seen a single band live from before. But of course those aren't the mainstream festivals.

lol i'm completely at the opposite side, i have seen precisely zero bands who will attend Wacken this year, ok maybe if Blind Guardian get confirmed at the last minute i've seen them, and would love to see them again("epic sing along moments" is an understatement, especially when considering 75000 people chanting Valhalla)

lol i'm completely at the opposite side, i have seen precisely zero bands who will attend Wacken this year, ok maybe if Blind Guardian get confirmed at the last minute i've seen them, and would love to see them again("epic sing along moments" is an understatement, especially when considering 75000 people chanting Valhalla)

I certainly doubt that 75000 will chant along

ahem... why not?

Mmm, selling 80000 tickets. I am 100% sure that least 30% don't like Blind Guardian AT ALL

But that time there were like "only" 50.000 right?(Saxon said so in their Wacken DVD though i don't remember if it was recorded in 2004 or 2007) aanyway 80.000 would be even more epic

If so then only because they sealed the festival ground at some point. I've later spoken to people who desperately wanted to get in and were kept out because it was air-tight all the way.

The actual festival ground is by far not big enough to hold 75k people. So ticket or no ticket, if they decide it's unsafe to let more people onto it there's not much anyone can do. So be quick when it comes to the big bands

they said they're gonna move the site to a bigger site this year, so hopefully they'll have enough room.. anyway since i'm gonna be spending most of my day in the beer garden/WET stage/in the field in front of the main stages and since everyone complains about the line-up they're gonna just be playing football or watching the wrestling/whatever so i won't be left outside

plus since i'll be arriving at like 5:00 AM on the 29th(way before the actual start of the festival) i'm gonna pitch my tent like really close to the entrance so i don't have to walk a lot

Yeh, Blind Guardian in 2007 was some experience. I was in quite a bad spot and couldn't see them too well, but the music and the sheer number of people singing along to those songs was just amazing.

I can't believe what this year wacken brings to us...THIS IS ABSOLUTE SHIT!! true u can find 5 to 10 bands that are good but 60 other are sooooo not wacken...wtf look at the last years wacken or at the 2007 year, that was wacken not this!! I'm selling my ticket too and so does my friends, if someone else don't confirm that would make me go. I was thinking : "Hey it's 20 years it will be good let's buy tickets" we got there in the last moment and got the tickets (we were happy as hell) and what do I get for 130 euros A BIG DILDO TO STUCK IT IN SOMEONES ASS!! I just regret the thing that i didn't see the metal camp it's 1000 times better. Just go on the site of metal camp and you will see who is there And what were we all thinking they sold their tickets in December...now they can bring cocksucking bands they have their money. I think that they won't sell next year tickets so fast!

Heh, 5th Avenue(the first headliner of the festival) just got confirmed, pretty cool, and LOL @ the news posted:
The whole audience sang and swayed to their hit "Do you want my love?" at the latest. The concert even made a couple having sex in a calm corner of the festival area. If the music of "5th AVENUE" is able to cause such reactions?

..and this was waay before the festival was in a 100000 sq. meters area
