My top three in different genres would be:

Adagio (Fr) - Progressive/Power
Mastodon - Stoner
Protest The Hero - Metalcore/Progressive

All of these bands seem to have made a pretty great contribution to Metal by their sounds.

Oops my mistake I only read "original" in the thread title where it ALSO says "talented" I agree both bands are full of talent.

Deathspell Omega? Obviously looking at stuff since SMRC. I think it's very original stuff and the talent of whoever actually plays the stuff (Hooray for zero band presence) is off the charts, especially for BM.

Edit: Oh, so we're looking at bands formed since 00? And not releases? Well poo, i still present DSO.

For me it would definitely belong here Epica, which made some great albums, which show (for symphonic metal genre) quite a lot of originality comparing to lots of other bands. Than I would mentione also In Mourning, which had also improved themselves as a great talented band with their lately second release ''Monolith'' (though I still prefer a first one a bit more). Than there would be also Ghost Brigade with two very decent albums.

To name a few I would say Alcest, In Mourning, Peste Noire, Between the Buried and Me, The Ocean, Kalisia and Deathspell Omega among many others. I believe that the bands I name-dropped are both original and talented, they at least gave me a "wow" reaction, so I hope they keep going in the same direction.:D

Maudlin of the well (around earlier than 200, but only really demo's)
Unexpect (same as above)
Kayo dot (not really metal though; although there is a fair bit of distorted guitar and death growling in their first two albums)
Diablo Swing Orchestra

From progressive metal I'd go with Zero Hour, Adagio and Andromeda...

I agree 100%, especially maudlin and Kayo Dot. Toby Driver is probably one of the most original songwriters I have heard. I would also include Citriniti, Planet X and Antidepressive Delivery

if u are talking for agalloch i will disagree, the sound is too "fresh" to be an 90s inspiration ;p

"Dope" are truly the most talented their genre is Industrial Metal\Nu Metal. They have great hits in 2001 like

Die MF Die

How about Cadaveria, it a kind of weird mix of Black, Thrash, and something totally different. At first they sound kind of Black,Thrash maybe death, but then they throw in a few random changes in the music that offer something interesting to the songs.

Screw it, they should be nominated anyway. They're perfect for the title of "most talented and original band"

Well there's Ulcerate, Mitochondrion,and Impetuous Ritual... Don't hear much bands sound like them. Skeletonwitch is one of the most unique sounding thrash bands I've heard in the 2000's, with Vektor being up there also/

I have to disagree with the OP. Epica are, always have been a poor man's After Forever. In terms of quality and originality.

I think that would be Fleshgod Apocalypse, followed by Meshuggah. They're the most original bands I've heard.

2- HB
3- Magica
4- Majesty
5- Rain Fell Within
6- Sirenia

this are the talent bands from my collection starting 2000 or after & surely there will be more

When I first heard the name Diablo Swing Orchestra I was like oh god please let them sound like DT's Bad Devil.
