You should give them another chance and check out their newest album , Which I think is an excellent starting point.
My opinion is that Enslaved are the better band.... Cant really give any objective reasoning for it though... I just prefer their songs.

Enslaved later stuff can hardly be considered as TROO KVLT black metal, Sure there is black metal influence present in Enslaved But to say they are playing PURE black metal nowadays is a bit of a stretch ... More like an extreme progressive metal band.

Yeah man true, i wounder why people still consider them as a true black metal or old school norwegian BM, in fact i like their latest album, not that good for my standards, but still good.

People must just judge by their origins in the early Norwegian BM scene without realising they have matured as musicians into a very different sound

BTW I really liked the newest Enslaved LP, I think it could very well be their best record yet, definitely in My top three for Enslaved Way better than Opeths Watershed IMO.

Opeth because they are representative of Ambient Death Metal

Ambient? death? uh....

both have progressed into other territory from their beginnings. neither are "pure" "tr00" anything.

we tagged Enslaved as black metal for AOE because the blackened aspects were more prevalent and pronounced than they were on Vertebrae, which we had flagged as Prog in the MSA's.

and I agree, AO, the new LP is awesome. really surprisingly good considering how shortly it followed AOE. they must have had one epic recording session if that is some of the cast off or undeveloped songs.

Voting Opeth on this one, but by a very slim margin.

At the end of the day they make music for us to enjoy..not to compare and rate..but if not for this thread i would have never listened to enslaved..i tried axioma ethica odini and loved it...what do you think i should listen to next???

If you're comparing their older stuff, then I would say Opeth. I'm generally more fond of death metal than black metal.
But comparing newer stuff, Enslaved. Newer Opeth sort of bores me, but new Enslaved is great, still has some extreme metal influence, and is better than their early material in my opinion... Overall, I guess I'd have to say Enslaved. The fact that they have less fanboyism might have had some influence in that choice.

I only got two Opeth CDs and two Enslaved CDs... judging from those I prefer Enslaved

Oh yeah, right...

Voted for enslaved, I just enjoy there albums more than opeth.

I'm currently enjoying Enslaved more, but Opeth was one of the reason's I got into extreme metal. Still Life and Ghost Reveries are two of my favourite albums, so I ultimately had to go with Opeth. Although Enslaved's last two albums are MUCH better than Opeth's last two.

I'd have to say Enslaved, because I've been listening to them way more than Opeth recently. Still, I consider some of the earlier Opeth albums classics.

Comparing albums like RIITIIR or Axioma to Heritage or Whatershed though.. the winner is pretty clear to me.

I prefer the old opeth over all enslaved but new enslaved is superior to new opeth

yeah, me too. and aside from the riff, vocal in opeth is special but enslaved not.

I haven't listened to Enslaved yet, though I plan to, and that's why I haven't voted yet. I have a feeling I'll probably be picking Opeth anyway, but it's not fair to vote until I've actually heard Enslaved's stuff.

Enslaved. Even old Opeth was dull to me, and Enslaved is infinitely better.

Not my fault that Blackwater Park is the only good thing they ever did and everything else is as dull as standing in line at the DMV.

That's a bit harsh. Surely MAYH and Still Life could never be seriously qualified as dull. Still, my vote does go to Enslaved too.

Enslaved. Opeth is just not my thing. I don't say they are bad, I just can't stand them. Personal opinion.

Enslaved songs don't flow quite as well. I'm pretty fickle though so I might come back and edit this Enslaved pushes the boundaries and I applaud them for that, while Opeth's quality is far more consistent.

Difficult decision but as I liked Enslaved last realease much more than the weird 70s stuff Opeth released they thake the spot.

Shouldn't your decision be based on your positive experience with each band? If you had to pick a record to play eternally, would it be from Opeth or Enslaved?

Truthly said I have never listened an Enslaved album from start to end only some tracks. I would choose Opeth since I have listened Ghost Reveries and Watershed which I found brillant.

But you voted Enslaved no? I stopped listening to records from start to finish. It was far too time consuming and wasn't worth the benefit of getting the feel for the album as a whole. Enslaved is great in they're own right, but they are less...tamed than Opeth.
