I guess it's time for Obscura to have their own topic! So here you can discuss everything about this new band which fame after "Cosmogenesis" looks to grow on a lot!

For those who don't know the band: Obscura, formed in 2002, is a German band. They play a mix of Technical with Progressive Death metal and have released two albums till now: Retribution (2006) was their debut album and it is a decent effort not very promissing but good for a new band. Cosmogenesis (2009) is their second album, an excelent album which took very high ratings from the reviewers. After releasing "Cosmogenesis", Obscura is mentioned as a very promising band...

Yeah, I saw them with Cannibal Corpse and stood right up to the stage, closest to Jeroen, and it was fuckng amazing to behold him play the shit out of his bass for their short set. Awesome!

Didn't your eyes suffer though? It's hell when you're near the stage.

Why would one's eyes suffer when you're right up against the stage?

lol I meant ears! Today I'm a bit crazy sorry.

Aaah ears, now that does make a lot more sense. But they don't have to suffer if you wear your earlpugs

I'm not sure what earsplugs to buy. What would you recommend, as a professional earplug user?

I recommend custom made earplugs. They are a bit more expensive but certainly work a lot better.

If you dont want to spend massiive amounts of money, just get the various 'party' earplugs that are available everywhere. just search ebay.

for example, Alpine Hearing Protection has these MusicSafe Pro (expensive) and PartyPlug (cheap) plugs that I can personally vouch for since I've been using them for a while. The important thing is that they do a good job of removing excessive noise all over the spectrum and not just in the high frequencies like the cheap drugstore earplugs do.

Thank you, jupi.

And they don't take away from the sonic experience? I mean, can you still fully enjoy the music?

I should probably invest in some earplugs. I'm only 24 and I feel like my hearing is already going down the shitter.

Well, they are not as good as custom-fitted ones but they are OK. Can't complain really.

I like these guys, they seem to be able to produce a variety of different sounds. It's interesting when they go from sounding something like a heavy Cynic, to sounding like Death, and then even a little like Opeth on the track Orbital Elements, in my opinion.

I really like this band. Much more organic than that of the coldness of Necrophagist, even though they rule....Obscura has more of a "progressive feel" than a "prog" feel...meanings it flows more naturally and doesn't rely of being odd.

What? Opeth and Necrophagist are both amazing live. I wouldn't even expect it, but they are. If you think Obscura is bad live, I wanna know the next time they're coming to NYC.

A new interview with Hannes Grossmann and Christian Muenzner.

Last question: Do you have something to add?

Hannes: The reason why we do this music is chicks.
Christian: and money
Interviewer: And you get a lot of them?
Hannes: yes, because we are paid note by note: the more notes we play the more money we get.

LOL. Great interview. 18 minutes. My kind of video to watch.

Good news for Obscura fans,

Welcome back, Jeroen Paul Thesseling! 🤘🏻

Here's the official statement:

Fretless bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling rejoins Obscura

Legendary bass player Jeroen Paul Thesseling ( QUADVIUM, SALAZH TRIO, ex- PESTILENCE) has rejoined the German progressive death metallers OBSCURA as a permanent member after a 9-year break. Thesseling, known for his signature fretless playing in death metal and world-fusion, joined OBSCURA in 2007 and recorded the band's critically acclaimed full-length albums "Cosmogenesis" (2009) and "Omnivium" (2011), both released via Relapse Records.

"Perhaps fans are somewhat surprised about my comeback. After leaving OBSCURA in 2011, we stayed in touch and over the years I've visited some of their concerts. Since the departure my main focus has been on exploring 7-string bass guitar and playing different genres. It's really nice to be back in the fold, being involved again in the writing process, collaborating on material for the upcoming sixth studio album and to prepare for intensive touring. We expect to announce a completion of the group's new line-up on short notice", says Jeroen.

Thesseling, who has been touring the world, also recorded PESTILENCE's fourth and sixth studio albums, "Spheres" (1993) and "Doctrine" (2011). Late 2017 he released the debut work "Circulations" with the jazz-fusion group SALAZH TRIO, featuring legendary drummer Horacio 'El Negro' Hernández. In 2019 Jeroen founded the fusion-world-metal group QUADVIUM with fellow fretless bassist Steve Di Giorgio ( TESTAMENT, SADUS, DEATH). QUADVIUM is currently working on their debut album.
