You can check out the German band Grailknights: I heard some samples of their 2008 effort and it's kind of ok.

Edit: What a lucky choice: the advertisement on top of the page is about Grailknights ( apperently they are comming to Antwerp this week, )
Not interrested though.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow has some great keyboard-oriented metal, similar to Kalmah, but not as straight forward.
Also that Canadian band, Blackguard sounds like a folky Children of Bodom.

I guess you know almost all xpower bands there is to be known... There aren't many bands within this young, almost all-Finnish genre. I suggest Mors Principium Est (not so Extreme Power, but some tracks sound like it), Eternal Tears Of Sorrow (I can't believe you don't know them, they're awesome) and Skyfire. If you're into Folk metal, many bands have an xpower base: Blackguard (first album is a gem, when they used to be Profugus Mortis, second one is OK), Runic, Wolfchant, Equilibrium (Equilibrium's guitar is much akin to xpower), etc.

A non-Finnish band that I would put into this genre is called Traces. They've from the U.K. They call their style 'extreme symphonic metal.'

So far they only have an EP released, but I think it's excellent.

www.myspace.com/tracesmetal

I was also thinking about this genre recently and how it seems to be a distinctly Finnish genre. However, Finland doesn't seem to get the credit for it the same way Norway gets recognized for black metal or Sweden gets noticed for melodic death metal.

Yes, that's exactly what I think. If there's Gothenburg Metal, why isn't Extreme Power called Espoo Metal or Pudasjarvi Metal? Bodom Metal would be great, too ^^

thx for the tip! They sound really good imo. Pretty symponic melodic black/extreme power with elements of folk.

Coffee!!
Some bands and their 2009 release I would like to mention are the following:

  • Be'lakor - Stone's Reach
  • Coram Lethe - ...A Splendid Chaos
  • Edge Of Serenity - The Chaos Theory
  • Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Children Of The Dark Waters
  • Hollenthon - Tyrants And Wraiths [EP]
  • Insomnium - Across The Dark
  • Nightrage - Wearing A Martyr's Crown
  • Novembers Doom - Into Night's Requiem Infernal

There are probably some Gothenburg styled releases among them, but I figured you wouldn't mind. I especially like Be'lakor's effort.

Traces is awesome, can't stop listening to their debut EP! But they don't sound like xpower to me... They're more like melodeath mixed with symphonic black.

@GT: I just tried every band I didn't know from your post and NONE of them sounds like extreme power. In fact, ETOS is the only xpower band you mentioned. And many are not even Gothenburg (Hollenthon is symphonic melodeath and November's Doom is melodeath/doom... not exactly similar to COB or Kalmah). Almost off-topic. But thanks for the tips, Hellenthon is great ^^

Yeah "Flies & Lies" is a fun album...some very epic clean vocal choruses. Also anyone heard Divercia? They're a pretty cool band, havent been signed for the longest time though, but I think they recently got a record deal. Similar to Raintime, but better IMO. Their most recent album is "Cycle of Zero" in 2004 so they havent been busy for quite some time.

Pretty much straight up melodic metal (i suck at these sub genre bullshit) but every now and then they have these spurts of brilliance when you dont expect it hehe
