One of the things I received for Christmas recently was the album Merzbear by Merzbow. The track listing goes like this: 1. Part.1 8:20 2. Part.2 9:54 3. Part.3 15:17 4. Part.4 16:04 Therefore, would that count as one song, or would it be four songs that make up parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 of this album? There are quite a few albums like this that have similarily titled songs, such as A Pleasant Shade of Gray by Fates Warning (wikipedia says that that is one song), PsykoStareVoid by Hjarnidaudi, Nattestid Ser Porten Vid, Over Bjoergvin Graater Himmerik, and Hordalands Doedskvad all by Taake. So, would Merzbear and some of the others mentioned be one song or multiples songs with orderly song titles? Thanks.

I don't mind as long as the "parts" are individual tracks that can be listened to separately, and not just one 37 minute song.

But why would you mind if it would be one 37 minute song?

Don't mind as long as there isn't an 8 minute part in there that sucks. If it is 37 minutes of a stunning musical masterpiece, fine, but if is better off as separate entities, allow a break.

I don't know if it would count as one song? Does it sound like one song? Devil Doll's "Dies Irae" is made like that and is one whole song divided in parts.

Like on 2112 by Rush, the song 2112 is 20:34 and has 7 parts, but it is only one track, and the 7 parts have a different sound to them, and if one were to want to listen to only one part, you can't single out that part, just as an example. Cradle of Filth Damnation and a day has many parts, but they are individual tracks. I like that, can hit the replay and hear it again!

With a band like Merzbow I don't really think it matters if it's the same song or not really because even if it had 12 tracks all named you still wouldn't be able to tell when one ended and another one started. Personally in my book though - seperate track = seperate song

Ulver does it for quite a few of their albums actually. Bergtatt Nattens Madrigal Lyckantropen Themes Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (even though there is a bit more variation with the titles)
