I used to like a lot of music, but after finding MetalStorm, I discovered many new bands I had not heard before, including Amon Amarth. Seeing "With Oden On Our Side" on the MS Random Album feature started my interest about this band, and from there my position on "extreme metal" was changed.

So, this is my fourth album of AA and have to say, that I crowd it into my head two times a day. The voice of Johann Hegg is fantastic, in melodic passages sounds really amazing. I already like the album "With Oden on our side", but "Twilight of the Thunder Gods" I now prefer.

Amon Amarth is a name that makes every true viking look up from their mead tankards. Unlike Ensiferum or Turisas these guys leave weaponry home and hop into a car instead of saddling their horses. They don't need props as they are vikings by heart and their album Twilight Of The Thunder God shows this more than well.

Maybe if I didn't listen to "With Oden On Our Side" album, I said that "Twilight Of The Thunder God" is the best Amon Amarth song. But IMO it's a copy of "Valhall Awaits Me". the riffs are quite copied from it and I believe that Amon Amarth was going to repeat another "Valhall Awaits Me".

Jeezzz... Listening to the "The Hero" I swear I see images from "The Pathfinder" movie! Hell, I see them every time I'm listening to Amon.

I hope one day they'll make an album based on that movie.

...and I've always wondered when Amon will pay tribute to THE most beautiful predator: the wolf. Well, here they are with "Live for the Kill". Extraordinary track. Praise to Apocalyptica too.

Yes, indeed. The similarity is baffling and, in my case, even repulsive.

I find this album in a similar case with the album "The Crusher" ("Masters Of War" and "Releasing Surtur's Fire") with two outstanding songs, "Twilight Of The Thunder God" and "Guardians Of Asgaard", and the rest of the album between good songs and regular songs, although Twilight Of The Thunder God with better production.

This is actually melodic death metal, and it's far from perfect.

Sheesh, looking at all the 8's, 9's and 10's my 7 looks a little hateful. But that is not the case. This album is upbeat and a lot of fun, but I would have to say that AA's overly safe writting gets old quick. So, although fun, entertaining and good for a quick fix, it just doesn't have the musical qualities that keep me enthralled.

Some plusses for me are the vocals (That guys voice rules! I wish I could talk like that all the time) and the very well done production. Oh, and the album art is really cool.

That's probably one of the better-defended 7s I've read in a while. I'd personally give this album a 9 because I have fanboy-like tendencies when it comes to Amon Amarth, but a 7 is still a good score.

I think Amon Amarth are less generic than a lot of the revivalist death metal bands you get wet over Marcel.

Nope they are just as bad in that respect
But somehow due to being on a big label people seem to miss that. Same with what is currently happening with Vallenfyre and Sonne Adam.

This album deserves a great deal of credit for being the one that got me into Amon Amarth in the first place. There is a visceral power running throughout, and that beautiful violin part of 'live for the kill' is sweet. The songs on this album work so well live too, making it more of an atmospheric sound albeit with some truly amazing songwriting. The one point knocked off is probably because some of the riffs are repetitive-not ALL.

...that beautiful violin part of 'live for the kill' is sweet.

Agreed, although you can credit the cello work to Apocalyptica.

This is definitely one of my favorite melodic death metal albums. It weighs a ton thanks to the fat-as-fuck riffs, it brings you out on the battlefield, it balances aggression with cheese perfectly, and the intense atmosphere sets the mood for what most bands would be happy to call their magnum opus.

For me, The Avenger was one of their weakest record ever. Honestly, "Crusher" was a really good stuff and I know they gotten low rating out here but i really don't care as long as they sounded awesome on that record.
