Even before this album was released and before anyone could have heard a sound of it, quite everyone knew that this will not become an album worth a 10. Children Of Bodom have changed too much to return to the old awesome tunes. The band stated before the release of it that Relentless Reckless Forever would happen to be the best Bodom album ever. Blah blah the same shit a band always cries out for marketing, but in this case it even sounded ridiculous. I admit that I was one of those who decided not to spend money on this record. But now I am glad that I am not that firm with my principles in some cases! Expecting some Blooddrunk shit with only more party atmosphere it was a real surprise to me when I first listened to it.

Imagine a man walking down the road, traveling right down the middle, never wavering, never stopping. Maybe it's dark out, a slight echo to his footsteps. All of a sudden, the man stops. His ears perk up for a second, shrugs it off and keeps right on walking. That is about as close as Children Of Bodom are on this record to returning to their classic sound.

It's not as bad as I thought it would be, it has some redeemable qualities and the sounds tends to lean more toward their roots so they're taking a step back which is better. Hope is not lost.

I don't know why everyone hates on 'Blooddrunk', I thought it was a pretty damn good album, it was new and different, just like 'Are You Dead Yet?'. This album however... I don't like it, it's not bad, but it feels like a weak attempt to go back to 'Hate Crew Deathroll'. Every time I listen it and get to the song 'Pussyfoot Miss Suicide', I give up and listen the 'Hatebreeder' album.
Best song on the album: 'Northpole Throwdown' or 'Relentless Reckless Forever'.
Worst song on the album (+Worst CoB songs in my opinion): 'Pussyfoot Miss Suicide' and 'Was It Worth It?'.

Because it sucks. Imagine to someone listening to CoB's entire discography for the first time, they go through 4 quality albums, HCDR arguably being the weakest of the 4 but still a great album, they then get onto AYDY and more than likely don't even bother with Bloodrunk, but if they do, then all they have waiting for them is something WORSE than AYDY! It's like a horror story.

Well don't hate on me, but I kinda like it. I think it's kind of boring if a band sounds the same on every album, that's why I like that Children Of Bodom evolves. There's bands like Motörhead that still sound practically the same as 20 years ago, that's cool, I love how they sound, but I like bands that change too.

I agree. What was most apparent to me (listened to it twice so far) is that the keyboards are back (= I loved the keys in Follow The Reaper, but I couldn't really hear them in Bloodrunk...

And you rate it 4. How would you rate it if it was like you expected?
I take it as "better than I expected but still very bad", if you know what I mean.

Long time Children of Bodom fan. Bought the album today, not any better than what I expected. Not much better than Blooddrunk or AYDY, in fact AYDY is better than this. Maybe this album will grow on me, but so far i'm left with just meh. Still prefer the sound of the first 3 releases...at least they used made music to push their creative side. Now that they're commercial its just too late

EDIT: Like the guitar work and some riffs in the album, but the songs themselves just seem to be all over the place. Not changing the rating i've given yet. Not an absolute classic Bodom release to say the least...but then again, when was the last time Bodom released anything highly original?

For good reasons. This band is a pathetic joke.

If I said I agreed with that, Id be lying and bandwagon jumping for it's own sake. You (and others) of course though, are free to think that if you wish. xD All I care about is the music, and I like some of the music on the new album.

I like some of it too, but the old Bodom seemed far more innovative, nothing too watered down or commercialised to the point they lost any creativity. I feel that these later releases lose their creative touch when compared to what they first achieved so well. That said I think some of the riffs and solos are nice.

Well, that's because when COB first arrived, they were innovative and original. But if they were still making albums like "Hatebreeder" or "Something Wild" now, they wouldn't be classed as original, because they've already done that stuff before. Most bands never make any music that is truly original and also great, COB did, and they should be hailed for doing so. But it's a bit much to expect them to keep being innovative when they already broke the mould once. Just my 2 penneth worth! lol xD

Most people don't ask them to be original. They only ask them to make good music instead of watered down mainstream Metal crap targeted at young people and casual Metal fans, something they haven't done in years.

True, but at the same time there was still a progression even in the first 4 releases, had they progressed in a similar way to those innovative albums they may have had a greater appeal in the recent releases to the eyes of people here on MS, to what the more recent releases have shaped like (ie. much heavier and far less into the glorious roots) . Like you said its extremely difficult to break the mould a second time, thats just the way I see it that this release is more generic Bodom to say, Follow The Reaper. Not as captivating, nor memorable. It does have moments though

I can see exactly what you're saying, and I agree pretty much totally. I don't really care about the later albums' "appeal", because the only thing that matters to me, is what I think of it. What anyone on MS or anywhere else thinks about it doesn't interest me, other than to maybe have some friendly debate about it.

No, seriously now: it's because when music is targeted at teenagers and casual fans, it doesn't mean other persons who don't belong to these groups can't like it. It is not something exclusive. When it comes to tastes, it is more complicated than that.

Or maybe it's one of those instances when my elitism gets a bit far.

Yes, like all metalheads hated every single pop song. I don't personnally listen to mainstream music, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate a song playing on the radio. The same goes between metal genres and bands. Some metalheads work so hard to be trOO it just seems more pathetic than the ones who admit liking something un-trOO...

About the album, presently listening to it for the first time and well, not a single riff has hooked me yet...

Agree with that.

Well, after of listening the album very well, it is clear that the album is worse than the albums that we know. I have always believed that the force of Children of Bodom on their first albums were far beyond of the originality, were the great melodies. Here in this album you have only some good melodies, some virtuosity, not much more... although it is not bad disc, i feel it a little bit bored, well, although also i guess i like Children Of Bodom after all =).
