The only ones that really sound 'gay' to me are Lost In Space and that one with the really ambient, film score-ish intro. I think that one is Carry Me Over, or Cry Just A Little For Me. Even then, I still like the songs. For Edguy, the same applies to Save Me. It might be more radio friendly and mainstream sounding, but I fucking love that song.

Tobi should release some live Avantasia material at some point... Speaking of live material, has anyone seen the new Edguy DVD? I haven't bought it yet but will soon.

12.09.2009 - 15:28 Written by Ellrohir on 12.09.2009 at 09:32 We obviously have different standards because "Ministry Of Saints" is hard/pop rock to me. "Another angel Down" is hard rock with a bit of standard heavy metal, nothing more. "Devil In The belfry" ranges between hard rock and old school heavy metal, depending on parts. Powermetal is so commercial and mainstream-ish in general nowadays, people constantly mistake hard rock and heavy metal as Powermetal, while it is not. Young people often have a different conception of Powermetal than me because they grew up listening to stuff released in 1998-1999 onward, when PM already started to be softer in general.

I think that "Vain Glory Opera" & "Theater of Salvation" are the best albums by far. The only album I really have problems with is the disgusting "Rocket Ride",(except for one or two songs) In my opinion it was that years biggest disappointment of album releases. And if the band want to have fun as someone mentioned, well, I wish they would only have fun in the studio making such songs, but not release the crap on an album. "Ministry of Saints" is better but I have to say that I miss the older sound where power metal ruled Edguy. Still they are one of the better bands I have heard the last 10 years and they do a great live performance, at least everytime I have seen them.

12.09.2009 - 22:34 Written by Son of Odin on 12.09.2009 at 22:26 agreed on that, adding Kingdom Of Madness into list... and there is nothing bad about Mandrake and Hellfire Club as well the last two albums are "different", but it is same difference like with "new" Sonata Arctica...it disappointed someone, it atracted others...

I saw them live at The Opera House in September and they were reeally awesome. They actually sounded better than the albums IMO. I'm aware that some of their songs are power metal and some are just hard rock or heavy metal... but despite that....Edguy is great! I like them a lot.

27.09.2009 - 15:01 Written by Janne on 17.09.2009 at 21:59 And I agree with you. Imo, there are way more people who stop caring for this band because of their new (and sucky) material than this pop-ish crap can attract new fans. Most people who still care for Edguy are fanboys who are still in the denial phase and refuse to admit this band turned to pure shit.

I am on Lord_Regnier's side here. And yes I found old edguy enjoyable, and by far not as bad as most uninspired euro flower metal.

27.09.2009 - 17:17 Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 27.09.2009 at 16:35 I think it's an important distinction between me and pure PM haters. I liked PM very much in the 80s and 90s, when it was much more melodic speed metal-oriented. For a long time, the direction this genre took around the millenia pissed me off. Now, I don't listen to PM at all anymore. Nevertheless, I can draw a line between the good PM of old (I still respect it even if I don't listen to songs now) and the radio-friendly music bands are doing nowadays. There's one thing that makes me despise modern day PM in general, though: it lost its metal attitude, ìts roughness, its 'opposed to commercialism and critical towards society' attitude completely. Bands and artists act like cock rock musicians and billboard posers. They act and look like little bitches, not like metalheads. Here, I admit that I especially hate Sammet for pissing on his former fanbase, on metalheads in general, on metal music as a whole, etc. I'd really like to smash his arrogant ass face and kick his gay butt for all the shit he said in the recent years. To be honest, lots of people think Joey DeMaio is one of the most arrogant douchebag on the metal scene (and I think it too) but I believe Sammet is even more disgusting nowadays. He spits where he ate before and his head is so swollen he takes himself for a god. I agree with Marcel: old Edguy (until "Mandrake" incl) was enjoyable (though not exceptional imo).

28.09.2009 - 01:40 Written by Ellrohir on 28.09.2009 at 01:26 To end this discussion: I don't hate what Edguy were until "Mandrake", maybe "Hellfire Club". I utterly dislike what they have become since "Rocket Ride". And I have nothing against the other Edguy members, it's only Sammet's cocky attitude I can't stand. Finally, I believe Sammet's attitude and the musical direction he took both with Edguy and Avantasia will lead them to their demise in the long run.

Well, I think with this album he made a lot of variety, which is hard to find in a "metal enough" album. (By the way, JORN LANDE+TOBIAS SOMMET is the best combination ever!) But I can understand that some people might dislike it for what you said, eventhough it's a really stupid reason for me.

When i first heard Edguy, they were one of the power metal bands who added some humour to the scene without being 'lame', and were a little different, though not musically brilliant really. There wasnt many of bands like this, maybe perhaps Gamma Ray. I dont think they have a best album for me. Every album up to Hellfire Club has at least one or two great songs. The last two albums have been disappointing, but i prefer Tinnitus Sanctus than Rocket Ride. I quite liked the song Dragonfly, it is perhaps the most Power Metal song on the album, and quite catchy. Sex Fire Religion wasnt too bad either, but nothing special. As most bands are doing these days, they appear to be appealing to a wider audience (aka mainstreaming). So many of my favourite bands are heading this way. How many bands that i once called Power Metal, do i now label as Hard Rock, Glam Rock or Heavy Metal? I still call bands like Edguy as Power Metal, because im used to it, but really, they are not anymore from the last two albums.
