I found their albums to be on quite a high level musically, but I see that isn't really contigent with some of the other examples of extreme doom bands.

I think the qualifier "extreme doom" is a little useless, personally. There are substyles in doom, and they seem more useful in describing and categorizing the music. Traditional, funeral, drone etc. are all pretty clear. But there are funeral doom bands that sound quite melodic, and even the MS Awards has doom/death in both the vanilla and the extreme categories. The extreme/vanilla distinction doesn't respect subgenre boundaries, leading us to use two sets of categorizing standards. And that's unnecessary baggage, IMO. To be honest, I think the separation into "melodic" and "extreme" metal is too arbitrary to be useful on the grander scale, and doom is just a specific example of that. In fact, I think the tag is so popular on MS because the forum is seperated into Melodic and Extreme subcategories. It's not the only reason, but that has to be part of it because the distinction is way more common here than elsewhere.

Woebegone Obscured and their album Deathstination (yes, the album name is ridiculous). They play some really raw and good blackened Funeral Doom.

02.07.2012 - 13:58 Written by The Turbanator on 02.07.2012 at 11:15 You're extremely late to the party Hell, the album was even nominated for best extreme doom album here at MS in 2010 where it came in second Btw they have two new songs out on their split with Officium Triste. It was released not too long ago.

Btw I keep seeing that should of stuff surface more and more here on MS and especially in posts by native speakers of English, such as Kesh. My God there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to write that sort of eyesore
