Debauchery - Vocalist Sacked From His Job For Being In A Death Metal Band

Debauchery vocalist Thomas "The Bloodbeast" Gurrath was sacked from his position as a philosophy trainee teacher at a high school in Stuttgart in Germany due to the "violent" content of his music. Gurrath was given the choice by the educational authorities between continuing his job teaching ethics to 14-year-old students and maintaining his career as a death metal vocalist. Gurrath, however, refused to give up Debauchery, which caused him not only to lose his job at his school, but also to be banned from teaching anywhere in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg as long as he continues to be a member of a death metal band.

The school governors were apparently not aware of his links to death metal when they hired him. However, one supervisor at the school discovered the band's website and informed the authorities. The parents and the school officials were horrified when they saw some of the band's promotional materials which feature naked women covered with blood and sado-masochistic equipment. The officials described the band's live shows as signs of "mental disability" and decided that it is not safe for children to be in the same classroom with Gurrath.

"It was very worrying to listen to his music and then realise he was teaching our children," said one parent.

Gurrath defended the content of his band's music, which includes songs with titles such as "Kill Maim Burn" and "Torture Pit", claiming that it only reflect the violence in the world around him. "I would never give up my music just because the education authorities order it," he stated firmly.

What is wrong with all these people? I'm not surprised though. People always have to bitch about something, and usually they go for what they are not familiar with, like Derwood stated.

Now I have a question: If metal is so violent and so 'dangerous' to society, what does that makes of the commercial music we see nowadays on MTV and such? All I see in those tv channels are gangster rappers talking shit about who's the best, and crimes, and shooting people, etc. and yet it's what everyone in general likes these days. I wonder what makes crime grows nowadays... [sarcasm] It's not the gangsters that do shit all the time, no! Its a guy with long hair and a Cannibal Corpse shirt! [/sarcasm]. Somehow I never seen this picture in the news... hmm... makes me think.

After all, its only music.. only a foolish person let it grow into something other than that, like committing crimes, violence and such.

If he was doing a good job, then what he does outside of the school and away from the kids should have been irrelevant.

Can't say I'm surprised though.

Indeed. You shouldn't be able to fire a qualified teacher simply because they play music you don't like.

Personally, if I found out that my teacher was in a death metal band, I would see him as the greatest teacher ever.

Well, regardless if this is total trash you have to think of it from both sides of the coin. There are some people in the world that I wouldn't want teaching my kid because I would worry their ideals would permeate the teaching. Now I have no idea what this guy is like or how he teaches but regardless if this sucks it's up to the parents to choose who teaches their kids; you can't force a teacher on them if they don't want him.

I'm working for the Canadian government and I can ensure you that they would fire me, if I did like this guy and they learned about it.
And I'm not working with children.
What I want to say is there's nothing surprising in all this.
It doesn't mean I agree with their decision but it's not a surprise at all for me.

And one more thing... I think one of the things that we (at least many of us) are attracted to metal is its controversies... metal is always controversial. If we would ever reach the day when being a metalhead is for society equally acceptable like being a Britney fan, metal would lose so much of its charm.

If that is why you listen to metal then you must be the most pitiable fool out there. If metal were more popular it would for most of us actually gain charm. Not only could poor Gurrath possibly keep his job, it would also be way easier to get a hold of it and know the good bands through decent media instead of discovering the most awesome music entirely by accident as it happens to most of us now and then asking why the heck you didn't listen to it before. If you're really after controversy, at least in central Europe you had better quickly convert to Islam and live it openly. Grow a beard and wear Daffahs. That's what, through a good contribution of the popular press, most people around here are most afraid of. And it's about as ridiculous to do that to be noticed and "provoke" as it is to listen to a certain style of music.

Before describing other people as fools maybe you should take a course in English or learn how to read first. Loot at what I wrote, I said "one of the things that we (at least many of us) are attracted to metal is its controversies". You see the phrase "one of the things" or not, stupid boy?
This is to teach you reading. With regard to metal and mainstream, I personally think metal stays at least partly away from this mainstream so that it does not get commercialised. Some metal albums which were commercially successful, such as the black album of Metallica, I personally like. But still what keeps metal alive is not corporate sponsorship, but DIY spirit. Half if not most of metal genres emerged from tape trading and other practices outside of the mainstream. If you prefer metal goes popular, there is already plenty of it out there... go and listen to Bon Jovi and Posion.
Finally, I'm not after controversy. I am Muslim, currently living in Europe, and have a beard, though I don't wear that thing you mentioned which I haven't heard of in my life.My name is Mohammad, and I am not of the mighty Aryan race, and I don't have white skin and blonde hair. This is not something I did seeking controversy but I was simply born like this and happened to have a scholarship to study in London!! In the UK I am stigmatised for having the name Mohammad and in my country I am stigmatised for being a metalhead... nothing I chose in pursuit of controversy but this is how I was born and this is the music I love...

I didn't really mean to offend you, I exaggerated that post to underline the tone I had in mind. Obviously I failed, so I apologize. But insulting me in return doesn't make your response any better. And I'm not being dragged into a discussion about stigma here, I couldn't know either your name (whatever role that plays) nor that you're a muslim. And it should have been clear from my post that I'm not a guy judging people on looks or beliefs. So don't take me there.
The rest should be discussed via PM.

I understand, I do not feel angry, I feel like powerless against a bunch of idiots who think that metal is like an infectious disease that needs to be stopped at any cost. It wasn't necessary to ban him from all the freaking state, but whatever, he kept his position and his own beliefs instead of giving them the pleasure of quiting his band. Cheers for him, I would like to have the balls to do the same thing one day

Stupidity, ignorance, bigotry, close-mindedness, anti-facism turning into fascism when it's pushed to extremes...That's all I have to say about this! Stories like that make me really pessimistic about human beings. At least Gurrath.s reaction is the right one and maybe such a controversy is gonna help the career of Debauchery!

If I had to choose between my music and my day job, I would, by default, choose my music. While I'm not big on what Debauchery does, I find it very irresponsible and hypocritical of the school staff or whoever made that decision to fire him based on his participation in this band. I hate close-mindedness and hypocrisy. Another dumb move brought to you by German politics.

Plain ol' discrimination this is. Unfortunately Germany is probably the one place in the developed world its not possible (as in it won't get anywhere) to fight the ruling.

I hope Gurrath can find some way to support himself. Death Metal bands are not known for their income.

Closeminded idiots. Some people have their heads so buried in their own assess that they don't know what's happening in the world around them. Highschool violence? Let's blame video games. Shootout? Surely it must be that violent rock band they were listening to. Bunch of stupid ignorants, all of them. The worst part of this is that it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Not at all.

So how exactly is this different from dictatorship, from communism? If you're forcing a musician who barely makes a buck out of his art between it and their day job, you're practically saying to them "if you don't do what we want you to do, you'll starve". And even more worse part of it all? The message that we send to our kids: never question everything and no matter what, always comply to the strict rules of the conservative society, or suffer the consequences. Those kids will be bred like cattle to work until their dying breath, all for the sake of our blessed economy.
