The greatest metal record of all time. This topic is often debated upon in the Metal Kingdom and to most there is no definite answer. A worthy contender for this title is Slayer's 1986 masterpiece, Reign In Blood. Few albums withstand the test of time as well and even fewer have had such a huge impact on the metal world as this one.

Where does one begin reviewing an album with as much hype and influence as this? An album branded as revolutionary and with such a fanatical following. It is always going to be a difficult task, so I ask that for a moment we forget the hype surrounding this album and we look at the musical value it holds.

Reign in Blood was in many ways a brave new world for Slayer. It had a completely different sound to anything before it; they abandoned all the pretentiousness of the long, drawn out, complex song structures they had experimented with on Haunting the Chapel and Hell Awaits. In this, it was far more accessible, yet they didn't sacrifice any of their integrity or alienate any of their core fan base. Their intention was quite clear, that this was to be the fastest, heaviest, angriest music ever to be unleashed on human ears.

For more than a decade, Slayer has proudly fused thrash and speed metal into loud, offering doomish dirges, voraciously boisterous and blasphemous songs groaning over lyrics that depict madness, suicide and murder in excess, a style which should definetly suit a ten-year-old metalhead. On October 7, 1986, Slayer released what was to become their masterpiece, "Reign In Blood". An album discribed by Kerrang! Magazine as "the heaviest album of all time" and peaked at number 22 on Metal Storm's "top 100 albums of all time" survey, a position that only "the crème de la crème" bands could get. Believe me, reviewing a very popular album from a very popular band isn't easy at all, but sometimes justice must be done.

Wow, spoken like a true politician. Ignore 90% of my post, and twist the other 10% around to create your argument. I already knew that you wouldn't know Araya's beliefs, because you haven't even paid enough attention to the band to realize that this album has nothing to do with "hail satan".

Why don't you just calm down. The lyrics Hail Satan! were present in one of the songs. I find it ridiculous and that's it. If they weren't serious with that shit (Satanism cannot be taken seriously anyway), that's fine. I still find it silly.

Yeah that is true, Altar of Sacrafice, has lyrics like "speak the sacred words of praise, hail satan" or something along those lines... Weird how I have listened to that one 140+ times and can't even remember them exactly. I would say just embrace the vibe man, but I get what you mean about lyrics like that being a little silly.

Still this one is my favourite album of all time

Slightly overrated...i say 'slightly' because it is still a brilliant record in my opinion, but not quite slayer's best (it is personal preference). 'Reign in Blood' is basically the album that defines traditional thrash metal, but that's all. However, slayer make it look easy, however short the album may be.

Omg Trash god

That's what a trash god looks like.

I think that spelling mistake is so common there's probably a huge chunk of people that think Trash Metal is a real genre.

Pretty good album, but I don't think it deserves a 9 or 10. Highlights: Angel Of Death (easily the best song in the album), Postmortem and Raining Blood.

Although I find the album to be slightly overrated, the song Angel Of Death definitely is not. It is rightly regarded as one of the greatest and most iconic metal songs of all time. As far as album openers go, Angel Of Death is pretty much as good as you can get!

Yes, because it is rightly regarded as a landmark album, and for upping the ante in thrash. Overall, song wise, I do see it as slightly overrated, but for me it's still a 10 because the album was unique at the time... A kick in the head for the thrash genre, definitely!

I think 'Criminally Insane', 'Reborn' and 'Epidemic' are rather weak songs and generally the album wears thin on the second half. The first half is pure gold though.

"Criminally Insane" is one of the best songs on the album in my opinion. Very intense, with some creepy riffage going on too! I would agree that the first half of the album is the stronger though.

The-best-thrash-metal-album-in-existence.

I wouldn't go that far (I wouldn't even call it Slayer's best album), but it is certainly one of the most important albums in the history of metal. It's level of ferocity at the time of it's release makes it a landmark metal album, and especially in the world of extreme metal. This album arguably, had more influence on the sub-genres of extreme metal than any other, in general terms.

No offence, but that's a really bizarre comment given your 9 & 10 ratings for stuff like Amon Amarth, Scar Symmetry, Psycroptic, Insomnium, Dark Tranquillity, Lamb of God, Bloodbath or Meshuggah, all of which churn out copy n paste tracks (and I like some of these bands). And indeed some of them have no variety in song writing whatsoever and churn out the same old tired songs every album.

None taken, I was expecting this sort of comment anyhow.

I agree with you that the songwriting styles of those bands have little variation, but at least every single song is memorable (at least for the albums I've rated highly.) Play a song and I can name it in less than a second. I've listened to this album dozens of times and I still can't remember a single track

Edit: barring the first and last, of course
