I remember the first time I heard about An Autumn For Crippled Children, I assumed right away that me music would be hideous! But somehow I gave it a chance and it turned out to be really great actually

Dying Fetus or Rotting Christ just to name a few. Some of these bands try to extravagantly be gory or controversial, but they're really just shooting themselves in the foot if they want to be taking seriously, especially internationally. Who's going to want to see you with a name like Analcunt? You'd get in trouble just for saying their name.

First of all, to suggest that Rotting Christ aren't taken seriously is absurd considering they were one of the founders of Greek black metal. Rotting Christ may be a shadow of what they once were as far as their modern material, but that doesn't erase the role they had in the foundation of the Greek scene.

I would also say that you need to take each band into its proper context. Anal Cunt isn't Blink 182 or the next Britney Spears...they never cared for being "internationally acclaimed" or really appealing to anyone outside the goregrind/hardcore scenes. Who's going to see Anal Cunt, a megaton of goregrind, death metal and hardcore fans is who... I'm not an Anal Cunt fan nor a big fan more generally of goregrind, but again I think its a bit strange to question how "seriously" people will take a band who has long been considered such an influential force in their genre...

Anyways, as far as band names I think are ridiculous...majority of metalcore/deathcore bands. Bands like I Wrestled A Bear Once or We Butter the Bread With Butter. Also some pretty ridiculous USBM bands, but could just be that I dislike the bands and their bullshit so much their names have always come off as eyeroll-worthy to me (Weakling, Krallice "we're so artsy and progressive!")

You're missing the point. Some bands aren't even allowed to play in certain areas just because of their name. It doesn't matter how mainstream or not mainstream they're trying to be, but all bands like to have at least some success and if some people can't get passed your name regardless of how great the music might be, it may be difficult to progress.

Rotting Christ is nonetheless a good band. The name doesn't at all offend me, but I've heard about some people getting instantly turned off by it which is their loss.

Killswitch Engage is another one. I think they got this from a lawn mower? It's unique at least.

I was mainly talking about saying that people wouldn't "take them seriously"...which isn't the case since they were both very influential in their respective scenes/genres.

But on the subject of touring, as far as Anal Cunt and general grindcore/goregrind/pornogrind bands are concerned what you're saying is actually missing the point of the band, which is pretty much meant to be as extreme as possible in sound, name, lyrics etc. Yes, more extreme bands are more likely to have issues entering certain countries to tour, but they really don't care. Anal Cunt especially were pretty blatantly trying to fly in the face of that, and when you have albums called 40 More Reasons to Hate Us with songs like "You're a Trendy Fucking Pussy" and "Kill Women" you probably already know you're going to run into issues when touring. But again, as much as I'm not an Anal Cunt fan in any way, if they had changed their name or went for something less offensive, then they would have defeated the entire purpose of the band. The whole point is extremity and offensiveness to the point of sheer ridiculousness.

As for Rotting Christ, I think people should also consider that they emerged in the late 80's/early 90's within an Orthodox environment. Its the same as many other early black and death metal bands pushing back against certain social norms or in other cases against a particular oppressive force in their countries (in this case, the Orthodox church). So there really is a point within that context, and even when it results in outrage or being banned or causing controversy. That sort of thing is really the last thing on the bands' minds.

Really nothing wrong with controversy, but I guess I prefer it with a more optimistic drive, such as encouraging open-mindedness or rationalism. Bashing a religion just to bash a religion is too simple and shallow. It doesn't have to prove how extreme they are, the music will do the talking. I've heard harsher lyrics from far less extreme bands. But yes, sometimes instigating fury carries the essence of the music which is what many are intentionally looking for.

Hmm not sure its really bashing religion just for the sake of it? Greece is a country that even today the Orthodox church has quite a choke hold on society as a whole. So its not as though they were reacting to something that had no impact on their lives or overall freedom in society. *shrug* To each their own, though, I guess. You might find Rotting Christ's name ridiculous or silly whereas for me its a lot of metalcore and deathcore bands or a lot of USBM that I find ridiculous.

But with those aside, there are some bands who don't necessarily have a ridiculous/silly name but whose name for whatever reason just annoys me. Yattering were one of those bands whose name just made me involuntarily cringe lol Another one that people might want to smack me for is Manilla Road. Don't know what it is but the name always hindered my ability to get into them.

I think that name would be enough to put a lot of people off. It certainly did have that effect on Dave Mustaine....

But at the end of the day, that whole shenanigan probably got enough publicity for Rotting Christ to make up for what was lost by not being able to play the show...
