I contracted my first case of Anthrax in '87 when a friend started blaring "I'm The Man!" in his truck one night. Was hoping for the best on this album? and went back nearly 25 years for the inspiration for this review.

Hit play and sing along!

Now they're Anthrax and they take no shit
Over the last three years had eight vocalists

Eight years have passed since Anthrax, the so-called "kings of mosh", last released a studio album. Although their heavy metal shift (from their thrash origins) wasn't causing much anticipation for this album at first, several announcements and the return of Joey Belladonna, as well as the online promotional release of the excellent track "Fight 'Em Til You Can't", caused this album to be one of the most anticipated metal albums of the year. A decent amount of people were expecting it to be a groundbreaking thrash metal album, including myself, and most others at least expected it to be a somehow solid release.

Let us get this out of the way immediately: yes, it's true, Worship Music only has about three thrash songs on it. Yes, "Fight 'Em 'Till You Can't" bears some striking similarities to "Gridlock" off of Persistence Of Time. Joey Belladonna is overdubbed a lot. Most of the album is slow or mid-paced. Essentially, this album is different. It is not the same Anthrax that Joey left In 1992. If you hit 'play' expecting to hear "Indians" or "Time," you will be sadly disappointed. However, on its own merits, Worship Music is a masterpiece.

"At last!" one might shout being finally able to lay hands on the newest Anthrax effort, Worship Music. Eight long years we waited for some new material. Well, alright, new material released officially on CD. It's easy to assume that the role of this album - apart from bringing some good music of course - was to prove that Anthrax didn't vanish and are still here to remind the youngsters what thrashing is all about. Did they manage to do it? Well...

I would have preferred more songs like Earth on Hell and Fight'em Til You Can't, but overall it's a good album and a promising "come back".

This Album sucks!!!... Really....

Thank You!

Still sore about Bush leaving I see.

Actually, my favorite Anthrax album is Spreading The Disease (!) but yeah, maybe they'd release a better album if Bush wouldn't leave and they wouldn't have a 7 years hiatus including all that Belladonna-Nelson-Belladonna drama.

I'm an Anthrax fan who really likes the albums 'Spreading The Disease' through to 'Persistance of Time', although I prefer Bush as a Vocalist to Joey (as you can imagine, I love 'The Greatest of Two Evils'!) and Among The Living is one of my very favourite albums. I quite like the Bush-era albums too, particularly 'We've Come For You All'.

I've only listened to 'Worship Music' once so far, but I am majorly disappointed by it. I'd say it's just as disappointing as Morbid Angel's new album, but for different reasons. I don't think MA's new album is half as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, but I definitely think it's their worst record and I generally don't like much Music of the Industrial genre. I find it at least keeps my attention for the most part, has its good moments (particularly some excellent drumming) and is catchy in places.

'Worship Music' is just plain boring for me. It barely does anything to keep my attention, besides the odd few decent moments. The song 'Judas Priest' does not deserve to be named after one of the greatest and most important bands of all time. I'll give the album at least one or two more listens, but I doubt my opinion of it will improve significantly.

Edit: To those saying it is better than the likes of 'Death Magnetic' and 'Annihilator', I couldn't disagree more. Most recent records from old-school Thrash bands have been great in my opinion, with the latest albums from Testament, Annihilator and Onslaught being particular highlights. 'Worship Music' doesn't even get close to the quality of the lesser of the latest old-school Thrash bands' albums, such as 'World Painted Blood' and 'Endgame', in my opinion.

Ah Ah you actually rate it 9 ...like you said! Well, it's not perfect but it's nice!

Woah, it didn't take you very long to notice, did it! hehe "Crawl" actually has started growing on me the last couple of times I've listened to the album, but still... for me it's just not quite perfect. 9.5 I'm pretty sure is my final rating for the album, but I could only give it that, if I reviewed it... lol xD

I couldn't review it, no. lol If you're not staff or an elite member, I think you need to wait at least 3 months after an album's been released before you can review it. Anyways, I'm not very confident in my review writing abilities...

disagree. a review should be subjective, otherwise it is worthless. the feelings and emotions the album inspires in you (reviewer/listener) are far more important than the vast majority of "objective" details.

does the album rock?
is it worth buying?
does it make you want to smash furniture and set your neighbor's house ablaze?

those are all far more important than:

what mode does the lead guitarist use when soloing over the I-IV-V chord progression?

a strictly objective review is nothing more than a fact sheet.

while you want the reviewer to have some objectivity in reviewing a piece, it's the subjective that give it flavor.

Back to topic - i'll be picking the album up today and doing a review at some point in the next week or so.

Maybe "subjective" was the wrong choice of words there, I dunno... :\ What I was trying to say, is that I never allow any pre-conceived notions, or bias (be that positive or negative) to affect my opinion in any way when going into listen to an album I've never heard before. That's what I was trying to get at when I made that post. I guess my problem is, Im very passionate about music, and I feel like in a review, I'd need to keep that in check, at least to a degree. Or I'd just risk coming across as being OTT and silly... I do lack confidence in my reviewing skills, I think mainly because what I write comes totally from the heart, and Im not very good with wordplay. lol

I love Anthrax, so I don't wanna sound like a dick when I say this, but..... I don't like this album. The first 3 tracks (Earth On Hell, The Devil You Know, and Fight 'Em Till You Can't) are awesome. After that though the album drops in quality pretty drastically.

Hey! lol

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a huge fan of Joey's vocals, but even a great singer can't save an album if it's lacking musically. (Rob Halford and Ronnie James Dio for example, both sang on more than one sub par albums in their careers...) For me, Joey singing on the album is just the icing on the cake. Had John Bush been the vocalist for it, I'd still be calling it a great album, because I feel musically, it's their most consistent set of material in 2 decades. The fact that Joey happens to be singing on it as well, is just pure coincidence. lol

Discovered Anthrax back in 2007 because i was listening to Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth so should really check out the last of the big 4. I absolutely fell in love with the band and they became my favorite. At the time they had Dan nelson and were rumored to be recording a new album so i looked forward to this with much anticipation. 3 years later i saw anthrax with the big 4 with still waiting for this album. So its fair to say i've been waiting for this for most of my teenage years. While not the masterpiece my wait justified, this is still a solid album and along with endgame and death magnetic, Keeps in the thrash style while still sounding like a modern metal record. I belive this record to be one of anthrax's best since Sound of white noise and probably a runner up for best of 2011 surely.

I just can't get into this one. I've listened to it quite a few times all the way through and can only find parts that catch my ear every so often. I love Joey being back and for the time his voice is sounding pretty good. But the majority of the riffs just don't speak Anthrax to me. There are even a lot of points where I can't help but think that the riffs are more similar to "The Damned Things"... that is what a side project is for, dudes.

I thought that this was a pretty decent album. I would have preferred these particular songs sung by John Bush. It's not that I don't like Joey, his old stuff was awesome. John Bush has more of a comanding voice (I feel that way anyway) than Joey. At least it wasn't Dan Nelson.

The more I listen to it the more I like it. Joeys voice is phenomenal and he has some serious vocal melodies going on. I wasnt expecting another Among The Living. They changed their sound years ago but for what it is its a catchy, fun, head bang'able listen.

Finally got my copy, and it's worth noting they've made good efforts on the packaging (nice shiny digipack with cool pictures, plus the single cover with Anthrax fighting zombies printed behind the disc). That in addition to a nice album and I'm glad I've spent my money for it.

Liked the production and overall the sound feels like a mixture of the two anthrax eras with a heavy modern production, my problem is, despite SOME good ones, I didn't find any of the songs to be particularly memorable or strong Anthrax songs, especially in the second half: better than stomp and volume, but not as memorable or as enjoyable as WCFYA or the classics
