I would like to open this topic to the noise/ambient genre, feel free to recommend bands. To begin with, I'll list a small summary of some of the genres which I think come under this category.

Death Industrial
Noise (I would argue traditional noise is quite alien from the more black noise works of Abruptum for example)
Black Noise
Power Electronics
Dark ambient
Ritual Ambient
Feel free to add more if you wish. Here are some bands I can recommend.

Black Seas of Infinity: Death Industrial/ritual noise project from the US.

Kaniba: A favorite of mine, minimalist ritual ambient formerly known as Terrorgoat of Finland

Raison d'etre: Dark ambient, all ive heard of them is the outro they did for Abyssic Hate's fulllength but I should have something of theirs in the near future.

Ugegi Aoiveae a Ser: Minimalist, kind of 'magical' dark ambient, Ive only heard one song, and that was from the split with Black Seas of Infinity/Kaniba, but it showed excellent promise.

Emit: Quite closely related to the blackmetal scene in comparison with the others, electronic black noise, quite frightening while still retaining some similarities to other, more blackmetal based projects.

At this stage the only distro I can recommend for purchasing some of the more obscure material on the list is Autumn Wind Productions, but I would like to hear some more sites which specialise in this field.

big fan of ambient/noise. raison d'etre are excellent, i recommend their "requiem for abandoned souls". then there's also archon satani, atrium carceri, deathprod, control (power electronics), desiderii marginis, gruntsplatter, herbst9, lustmord ("heresy" is essential dark ambient), etc. if you really want some ear-splitting noise, i suggest the almighty merzbow. he has over a hundred releases, but the ones i've liked were "merzbeat" and "tamago".

I'm a fan of (dark) ambient and similar stuff also. I can recommend some artists, though I don't know much to say about them. I have no knowledge of the subgenres & terminology, nor do I care about such things. So I just call them whatever it feels like to me. Anyway, here:

Aeoga - One of my favorite dark ambient artists. Industrial haunting atmospheres. http://www.helixes.org/aeoga/

Jääportit - Mystical darkwavish ambient (musical). Great stuff to listen to when going to sleep. http://www.jaaportit.net/

Dahlia's Tear - Sad and dark ambient.

Ah Cama-Sotz - I know only some of their stuff could fall under ambient music, they are pretty versatile. But I would recommend their album "La Procesión de la Sangre," it has all kinds of stuff. http://www.ahcama-sotz.com/

Ah, Aeoga have been on my mind for a while, what releases can you recommend of them?

@abraxas: Can you tell me a little more about Lustmord and Gruntsplatter, they have also been of interest to me.

well, lustmord is credited with basically starting the dark ambient genre with "heresy", which was recorded in crypts, caves, etc, and combined with occasional ritualistic incantations and tibetan horns, creating a bleak and unsettling atmosphere. he's also collaborated with a variety of artists such as robert rich, jarboe and the melvins.

don't know much about gruntsplatter though, sorry. the only album i have by him is "chronicling the famine", so you should check that out. here's a review http://www.aversionline.com/reviews/1478/

Zombie, M.D.

Gruntsplatter is great. Scott, the man behind Gruntsplatter did the artowkr and layout for the full length of my project Umbra.

Anyways, I like alot of this style of music. 20.SV is another amazing one that hasnt been mentioned.

There are two great dark ambient bands, wich took part of LLN: Aäkon Këëtrëh and Moëvöt. For ritual music, try The Funeral Orchestra, a funeral doom band, but nevertheless.

Will be getting Acid Vomit. Human Genocide soon by 20.SV, finally made up my mind. Isn't the Gruntsplatter guy also behind Umbra's namesake? Also in that respect, Zombie's own project Umbra (formerly Crematorium as it was advertised on the old forums) is very good, I think the cd is coming out soon.

@damnated: I think the LLN side projects are OK, but perhaps a little overhyped in underground circles, I found them to be a bit of a disappointment. I think 'pure' dark ambient which is more of a genre on its own (minus affiliation with blackmetal) is a bit better and more interesting. However a good recommendation nonetheless.

If you can stand Nazi-esque rethoric, I highly recommend NON, which is great from a musical point of view but kinda dodgy ideology-wise (although I suspect Boyd Rice is just taking a piss and isnt really the neo-nazi people like to label him as).

Otherwise, Japan is pretty much unmatched in terms of noise. They also have some great noise-rock like Melt Banana or the Boredoms.
For Dark Ambient, look no further than the Cold Meet Industry label (and of course the already mentioned Lustmord).

Thanks to this thread I have just discovered Jääportit .
I shall now have to listen to other bands mentioned here to see what else I have been missing.

(From habit I listened to the Finnish one first)

EDIT : @ KryptoN - I've now bought the Jääportit cd Uumenissa - it is really very good.
Thank you for mentioning it.

Now I will have to check your other suggestions.

I recommend you Artesia, dark ambient band composed only by two girls.
Also Dargaard nother dark ambient/neoclassical band.
The same members of Dargaard have another electro-industrial black metal named Dominion III.
And The Project Hate MCMXCIX, an industrial melo-death band.

Jääportit are pretty awesome, love the atmophere they create, another good ambient group called "shrine" they were friends to Jääportit on Myspace, you probably already know about them, but oh well.

I'm surprised noones mentioned MZ.412 yet I got one of their albums in last week. It's really awesome, definition death industrial (although thanks to the lack of information I could find on them I was expecting more dark ambient stuff). Still awesome nonetheless. Some tracks are really eerie while others are a bit of an aural assault with the added use of almost technoish, electronic effects. However I don't like the way they (occasionally) mix black metal riffs with noise samples, it runs the risk of making them sound like an extreme version of The Kovenant. However I will say they are a bit of a necessity if you're into the harder side of ambient/noise.
Ordered some AWP ambient/noise which I shall provide feedback on when I get it.

I remember for the moment some Atmospheric Metal bands:

Dargaard: A great Neoclassical Darkwave band from Austria, their music is completely made by keyboards, really deep music, one of my favorite ones

Evol: Great band from Italy, they have some black metal influences, but their instrumental music is awesome, check the album "Dreamquest"

Elend: A really dark band from France, I haven't listened many stuff but for people who like really dark music, this band is excellent

Die Verbannten Kinder Evas: They're from Germany, I don't know very much about this band, but according to what I've listened they're really good.

Hagalaz Runedance: A folk metal band from Norway, I have only one song, great atmosphere, like if there was a ritual in the music.

These are the bands I remember for the moment

Mediæval Bæbes was great, thanks for mentioning it.

Here are some more:
Oöphoi (Calm and soothing.)
Carbon Based Lifeforms (Also very calm and soothing, very "electronic" sound. Recommended album "Hydroponic Garden")
Atman (The one with the album "The Lonely Road," which I highly recommend (there are many artists by this name). I haven't heard anything else by them yet, but this album sounds kind of melancholic, makes me long for total freedom or something. ...ok that description sucks but try it anyway, it's very nice.)

I forgot to mention Wongraven, the solo project of Satyr from Satyricon in 1995. The music is made with keyboards with a medieval atmosphere and the lyrics are in norwegian

The first song, called "Det Var En Gang Et Menneske" is really dark, all the medieval atmosphere is there, great instrumentation and is one of the longest songs I've heard (16:33), I recommend this song, and the last one, "Fra Fjelltronen" is one of my favorite ambient songs, for everyone who likes dark ambient, I recommend this one, check it out, you wont regret it

on the subject of noise, whats your opinion on noise in the more literal sense (as opposed to abruptum for example which is ambient). i.e. early anal cunt EP's or sore throat (turning up the volume and making a racket) or anal spermshit (machine distorted noise. some recording but distorted to the point of being simply harsh noise).

Death Hymen - Flower Of Flesh And Blood
Format: Cassette
Label: Autumn Winds Productions
£3.50

Power electronics-industrial rhythmn-plenty of samples. Great new side project of Set-Heru (BLACK SEAS OF INFINITY, PER ORSUS, FORMIDONUS, SICK) and Diabolus (VROLOK, VOMIT ORCHESTRA, SICK)

" The first release..."Flower of Flesh and Blood"...will consist of six tracks of dense, chaotic noise/power electronics, with elements that span the spectrum from breakbeat, to dance industrial, which exults female sexuality, with particular emphasis on the menstrual cycle, and the imbibition of such..let the perversions commence "

just purchased it. if its anything close to what vomit orchestra's 2CD is then ill be a happy bunny.

Death Hymen from what I've heard is completely different to V.O, I heard some samples of it so it might take you by surprise. Personally I didn't like what I heard, almost technoish, breakbeat in parts as described.
I'm glad you brought up the matter of noise noise (i.e power electronics etc) I think most of the time power electronics and noise of that type (eg, Whitehouse, the stuff you described, Grunt, Taint etc) are no better than how they are described, noise. Good if you're into abstract audio expression that is by all means a painful listen (which I'm not). Death industrial like latter Black Seas of Infinity, MZ.412 is great though, however it still isnt quite the same as pure noise which is pretty testing, there's simply put, nothing to like about it.
