There were rough times for the Gathering somewhere before 1994. The contract with Foundation 2000 was slight and some of the members left the Gathering due to the lack of co-operation and the shady results from the label. These were really dark times, and there was nowhere else to go, but back to the better days. And the better days came. Came in the form of Anneke van Giersbergen and her angelic voice that was perfect for the experimental atmospheric style The Gathering was producing these days (and what they are doing till now). Besides that they got a new contract with a German label - Century Media. And in 1995 the album 'Mandylion' was released.

Don't worry about his ornery words. We all know that no woman doesn't live up to his good/old hand. Fairly nice album btw

Strt ignoring the house troll. And peabrain makes it sound she's skinny, which she isn't not that she's fat. I don't think she's gorgeous either but she is okay looking. Nothing ugly about her at all.

Cynic Meathead often used absolutely nonsensical combinations of words to try and come across as clever sounding. Suffice to say swivel diarrhea means nothing at all.

As for what's-her-name, assuming this is her, I don't think ugly can be legitimately used to describe her. Unless you're another Ellrohir who has weird perceptions of beauty.

yes, that's Anneke van Giersbergen. Even though it's not what would drool over, it certainly isn't ugly either.

It does matter for a Dutchman, like me

and to be honest Mandylion was a great album but the last one which was any good by them. Nighttime Birds is just Mandylion part 2 and after that they really lost it totally.
Btw second album also sucks. Best is still Always.

I think that if someone doesn't know The Gathering (!) and wants to get to know well, "Mandylion" should be listen to the last. Definitely the most interesting album (as for me). After hearing "Mandylion" the rest seems to be weaker. "Nighttime Birds" still good, but a little worse.

True, I don't think it comes across as clever sounding anyway. But I would still like to see what he means by it
I mean, when you string words together, you obviously have some meaning intended, even though you're outrageously daft.

I don't know, I find Mandylion a good bit weaker than Nighttime Birds. That album is much more subtle and diverse. Mandylion is perhaps more even, but I love how Birds builds up to the climax of the latter half. Of course, it's only later they would reach their peak in Souvenirs.

That said, I don't feel there's a clear progression in their quality, even if there is one in style. If I had to name the great/awesome albums in their discography, it would be Nighttime Birds, How to Measure a Planet?, Sleepy Buildings (the live album), Souvenirs and possibly Disclosure. The just good, solid albums are Always, Mandylion, If_Then_Else and Home. Almost A Dance and The West Pole are pretty meh. So about every second album they hit gold.

(I'm not entirely sure how I feel about If_Then_Else. They're comfortable in their new style and the album has some of their best songs, but somehow it doesn't flow that well as a whole.)

Mandylion is indeed far better than Nighttime Birds, which is rather "poppy", which is obviously a negative thing.

That being said, a mosh pit with this kind of music is totally ridiculous.

Masterpiece. The whole album gives you the feeling that you are free, without limits, without control. Anneke's voice combined with the music composed is just an excllent outcome. Unique.

The best metal album with female vocals for me. Yes, I'm a great admirer of Anneke, but the music itself, while being quite simplistic, is still great. I enjoy the riffs and melodies a lot.

I like The Gathering and Anneke's voice. But, i don't think that album is close to being Gothic Metal in its pure example, like Widow's Weeds are.
