Amorphis have to be one of best and at the same time most loved bands from Finland. Actually, the only time they let me down was with Far From The Sun, the last album with Pasi Koskinen behind the microphone. The future of the band in the eyes of their fans was quite uncertain, but Tomy Joutsen came in like an earthquake and blended in a unique way with the rest of the band. Eclipse and Silent Waters prove it. Skyforger was good, just good. A bit more appealing to the common listener, hence the band left behind the grunting vocals to a big extent.

I have really high hopes for this!

It'll (probably) be something similar to their 3 previous works.

I too have very high hopes for this album. I really like their last couple of albums. Pretty much all the other bands I listen to have released "meh" albums this and last year, so I'm desperate for some good music. Also, they release it on my birthday so it HAS to be good!

Not sure if you listened to the last album...But that sounded only slightly death metal, and seeing as most bands tend to grow more melodic over time, I highly doubt this one will be death metal at all.

The cover looks so similar to Wolfmother's Cosmic Egg album.

Amorphis haven't really been death metal since the Elegy days, even though death vocals and Kalevala themes made a return when Tomi Joutsen joined From what I've heard, this album will be more progressive than Skyforger.

Oh. Yuck. I really hope they don't go overboard on the whole "progressive" thin.

Average track length is still around 4:30, so it's nothing else than trying out new things with the current sound. Expect more technical drumming

its hard to categorize, but the last 3 albums are a mixture of melodic-death, progressive, folk and even gothic metal (to simplify we can call them melodic metal..), but definitely not "traditional" heavy metal like Dio or Mötörhead... the era between toulena to far from the sun are okey for heavy metal/modern hard rock.

i'd call the era toulea-far from the sun hark rock with heavy metal moments and this era just heavy metal. yeah, it doesnt have anything to do with dio or motorhead but in my mind these are the best words to describe this music. the "melodic death" term would fit them a bit in eclipse. but after that not. generally amorphis have elements of many styles in their music but this doesnt mean that they play all these styles. they collect some elements and creating something new (which, as i said, is closer to heavy metal for me).

That's a turn up for the books o.0 Of course do they mean that 4 songs include nothing but clean singing and the others are a combo of clean and growls? I think that probablyis the case so I doubt it'll be all the different to the last couple of records.

Yeah, that's most likely since no Amorphis song had nothing but growls since Joutsen's arrival

"Metal" is the shortened version of "Heavy Metal", so the latest doesn't necessarily mean say NWOBHM or anything particularly old-school. As you said they're hard to classify so I guess calling them "Metal" or "Heavy metal" is the safest way to describe them, though I agree the "Hard rock" label is outdated. After all, "Folk-influenced progressive melodic death/gothic metal" is pretty complicated for a subgenre, right?

Well, Eclipse was a great album IMO and Skyforger seemed kinda flat with nothing really standing out. I hope this release has more to offer. I'm anxious to hear it

Who the hell cares what label to stick on this band. The band is great, has evolved alot in a good way and this album is going to be great. At least the two singles I heard so far are! Tomi is an excellent singer.

From the skyforger album, Silver Bride gave me goosebumps. It's an effing great song. And the album in general is also extremely good.
