Have to say I'm with SymphonyImpaled on this. I've stuck with the album for 4 playthroughs in the hope its apparent magic would surface but as he says it really is "tryhard crap", indicative of a modern generation of lifeless, soulless guitar players masturbating mindlessly. Ok that's not completely true. At times I heard some Gorod/Anata level brilliance but it was relatively infrequent. Some of the melody was nice and that combined with the occasional moments of excellence saves this from being a bad album, but one that I've heard many times before. There's just sooo much of this generic stuff around at the moment, I'm amazed people distinguish between them at times. An unfortunate poster child of scene at this point ultimately.

Fact is people will always be impressed by flashy musicianship but it's not, and has never been, an excuse to put songwriting in the back seat.

Anyway you can consider me the extreme end of death metal cynicism, I'm pretty sure I've made that abundantly clear many times before.

well i am one of those who said that they dont need to show ALL their technical skills to create a good album. but i disagree in general with what you said mate. this album has some very nice songs and moments. Vortex Omnivium and Euclidean Elements are AWESOME songs for example. OK i dont feel that the band plays "masterpiece music" and i wont give them the "10" for this record (i'll give them a 9 probably) but they have evolved from Cosmogenesis, and they seem to try to play MUSIC behind of all this technicality. Ok, you couldnt get into this album. this doesnt mean that it is shit and that everyone who likes it is impressed by guitar masturbators etc....

If that's true why is there so much popularity where tech-death is concerned, considering a hefty chunk of it is musicianship over song quality? You can't deny there's a definite attraction to this style of music and that attraction is the purely technical side of it. Technical is the new Brutal as far as I'm concerned. As I say this isn't bad by a long stretch but I wouldn't throw any medals its way either. It's the "Cinema of Attractions" of music, or metal at least. It's just a perspective anyway.

Exactly, tech death bands that spice up their music with melody, interesting pacing (i.e. slowing down and breathing a bit) and other unusual effects are ones worth exploring. Anything that gives it a bit of personality and defines it from the rest of the pack.

For instance look at Quo Vadis... or the last album by Arsis.. lot of people disliked Starve... Don't know why, Actually I found it refreshing and quite different from their usual TDM work... they 'like you said' spiced up the thing with alot of great melodies and took the time to think instead of just bashing the strings like maniacs... probly why I loved it. IMO TDM should try not only to show off skills but work on their structure, Quo Vadis IMO are the best at that.

Agreed. New Anata should give Obscura a run for their money, though.

I'm really torn between this and Septic Flesh's The Great Mass for death metal album of 2011. But I'm a slut for tech death, so I'd probably have to go with Omnivium.

This is actually really different from Cosmogenesis , that's what I got after the first play and this is a good thing I guess

Strange album for me. Usually not my type of music (tech-death) and aside from "Ocean Gateways" there really isn't any songs that really grab me. All that being said, there's something I can't quite put my finger on that keeps drawing me back to this album...
