Well, here it is, Rap.
Lots of metal Heads feel that this genre has
nothing to offer, that it is unintelegent and
without feeling, that it's all about smokin'
joints and gang wars.

But others may realize that rap and metal
arn't so different after all. Just look at
How Public Enemy Did a Song with Anthrax,
It's simple, both metal and rap can tend to have
rebelious and politically themed music. (punk to actually)
They both can indicate Drug problems and spiritual
Awareness.

For me, Rap is my favorite Genre of Music second
only to metal (Of Course!) Because I feel, well......
Pretty much the same as how I explained on the previous
Paragraph. It's intelligent, Political and for the most part
rebellious music. It also sounds good to me, If it's a good
M.C., the words flow like water with the Beat in the background.

So, what about you, is it stupid to you?
Do just not like the Sound?
Or maby you Love the sound,
and hey, do you relate to it?

Go Forth and Tell me!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: If you're going to critisize this genre of Music in any Negative way, Please make sure you critisize it with some inteligence. Statements like "The Only Good Rapper is a dead one," WILL BE MARKED AS A SPAM POST!!!
So please, remember that, and we're cool

Rap can be good, so long as it's not the dreck they tend to air on MTV and the radio.

Immortal Technique and Mr. Lif are the only rap artists I listen to on any sense of a regular basis, but that may be more because I haven't delved deep at all into the genre.

Also, with respect to comparisons between Metal and Rap, one cannot forget to mention Necro and other rap artists with lyrics who can make Cannibal Corpse look rather tame.

Rap.....ummm ewwwww. I don't like it because the vocals aren't sung or shouted but 'talked', the lyrics are absolutely pathetic and is the worst aspect for me. The backround music, well if it must be dance music, i firmly believe that keyboards should be most prominant, not just the programmed drums and bass. Oh and the fan base! Well anyway, i wouldn't want to dwell on that.

Well, while I can respect your overall oppinion,
for you to say raps lyrics Are "Pathetic", is an
obvious Pre-concieved notion Broght on by ignorance,
and that's not an insult, it simply means you don't comprehend what you say.
For instance, The Lyrics of the rap Group public enemy are extremely
politically oriented, while the lyrics of most Beastie Boys songs
tend to bepositive and uplifting. Also falling in the beastie Boys Category
Is Run-DMC, who Preached to the youth about the
Importance of education and to sway away from drug activity.

Now I understand Why you wouldn't like the lyrics of
just straight up Gansta' Shoot em up Rappers such
as Dr. Dre. and Snoop Dogg. But I find Respectable
and honerable messeges even in THAT.
So maby I've helped change your outlook a little,

I say that there's nothing wrong with the lyrical content of gangsta rap. It's the bling-bling shit I loathe, which came later and is the exact opposite of what gangsta rap was.

Anyway, it's not like Dragonforce or Obituary are somehow breaking new lyrical ground.

But of course, when rap became a huge moneymaker and bigger record companies started getting into the fold, the genre started to sell its own soul - something like what Glam did for metal in the 80s.

oh, well i'm aware that in Old School Rap the content was different from today's Rap. Actually the fan base ov Old School Rap is different from the fan base ov today's Rap too. So yes, maybee it isn't all alike, but still these days, most ov these artists just sing about 'bling-bling' and so on and so forth which really isn't actually for shit.

I never hear rap, but if I have to hear it, I can stand it (not for a long time)
The music is really catchy sometimes, but it doesn't means that rap is a talented music. And as for lyrics, I never understand them, the only thing I remember is that many rap artists say lots of vulgar words, which I don't like much

rap and hip-hop is good as long as it's not played more than once very 2 days on mtv or other "musical" televisions
i don't have anything against the existense of rap music, but i don't like it when rappers(fans) act "kewl" and think they are better than some people just because they have skateboards and 5-foot t-shirts with "r.i.p. 2pac" even though 'bout 10% don't even know his real name(2pac not tupac) and stuff
i don't know.maybe i'm not being open minded,but i just can't stand it when people(metal fans included)do stuff like that

Rap is misunderstood due to the massive amount of junk out there. Artists like 50 Cent really give the impression that all rap music is unitelligent and generic. I've heard some good rap, but it was mostly old-school. I've also heard some groups that combine rap with other genres that I like.

but actually i don't like the whole theme/style rappers are doing it.
like on - let me say - 90% of their vedios are full of half-bare girls and porn stuff...

but if we are going to talk about the music itself, i can say that alittle little songs i liked, but the most are not..

i can't listen for a complete rap album.. only the best song of it and once a week maybe.. or if i have to put such songs (coz of being surrounded with ppl who dislikes metal) not more..

Cool to see the nice intelligent posts here.
Could anybody explain me the difference between rap and hip-hop?

well to begin with, Rap is a Subgenre of Hip-Hop.
Hip-Hop Began In New York City, U.S.A., because
poor blacks wern't being let into disco's. So one day
A group of people decided to pool some money and buy Some
D.J. Equipment (I think it was grand master Flash).
They would then play Drum loops from james brown songs
and have people dance to it out on the streets(Kinda like their own Disco)
That in essence, was hip hop.
Then People began to talk in rhyme over the Rythym
And became a form of self expression. This was still Hip-hop
however, because they would often loop the same Phrases
Over and over with the beat. Then when Somebody decided to
Actually write Entire Lyrics for songs to Be spoken, That's when
It evolved into Rap.

Hope I helped.

At the moment, my favorite artist is Aesop Rock.

I've heard some Aesop Rock's stuff and it was really good. Actually I had totally forgotten about it, so thanks for mentioning it. I will have to get some of his stuff.

Anyway, I can't say that I have gone very deep into the genre and I rarely find myself in the right mood for it. I've heard some great artists on the last.fm radio, in fact almost every rap artist I've heard that way has been good or at least ok. Too bad I can't remember the names. The "MTV rap" mentioned here on the other hand is IMO hilarious (not necessarily in a bad way, but a big portion leans to that side), but I have no problems listening to that stuff. It's not something I can really enjoy though.

Also, when rap and hip-hop is mixed with other genres the result is almost always very interesting, and often damn good.

Hmm... Looks like no one ehere has heard Cypress Hill and Wu-Tang Clan. I don't know much about rap but I like what I have heard of this two (bands?). I had a Wu-Tang clan game for Playstation called Wu-Tang Shaolin style. quite good, and of course they did the music.

I personally like a bit more Cypress Hill because they add some rock elements sometimes, like in the Skull & Bones album, with songs like "Can't get the best of me". I have not explored the enough, because rap in general, for me, can become repetitive after a while.

And here's somethin' I bet you Didn't know about that game you had,
The reason why it's called "Shaolin Style" is because they came up in the
slums of Shaolin, NYC. Some of my Favorite songs by them are "Cream", "Enter Method Man", And "The Very Worst"

As for Cypress hill, I have a lot of respect for them, but I'm not
