Hey guys, so I'm really into thrash metal, and I've been looking for some old-school death metal, along the lines of Death, Master, Morbid Angel, etc.

Just wondering if you can recommend anything, thanks.

Cannibal corpse arent really anything special IMO. Maybe a bit overrated for me i just find them boring. Speaking of CC here is Monstrosity... Corpsegrinders old band... the one he should have stuck with.

imo CC with barnes were an awesome or at least very good and IMPORTANT for the genre Death Metal band... after "the bleeding" they went safe though...

Even if i dont like the music all that much,You are right I probably should have said they were important to the genre.. Its probably because i wasnt around when cannibal corpse was brand new so as i listen to them now they come off as monotonous for me.

Chris Barnes is to Cannibal Corpse what Ozzy is to Black Sabbath.

Barnes' vocal style fit with CC's original sound (guttural, primitive death metal) before Corpsegrinder-era CC became more "safe".
Ozzy's vocal style fit with BS's original sound (traditional doom) before Dio-era BS focused more on heavy metal/hard rock.

I was around when CC was brand new and back then they were as monotonous to me as they are now. Generic boring DM just like Malevolent Creation, Benediction, Cancer and a whole slew of other English DM bands from back in the day (first two of course being American)

I agree with you. Especially on English DM, as a whole it sucked with a couple of notable exceptions, Its par for the course though, As truly excellent bands always inspire legions of knockoffs and imitators who do nothing but clog up the genre.

are u saing, for example, that "the bleeding" isnt important for death metal (and a bad-boring album can rarely inspire other bands)? or that tomb of the mutialated or the other 2 albums are not important too? they may SOUND boring to you but they had variety, something they dont do nowadays.

Montrosity's Millenium is such a great album. I like Imperial Doom, but thought the production brings it down. In Dark Purity was ok, but they aren't the same without Corpsegrinder.
As for Cannibal Corpse, their debut is probably the closest thing to old school death metal. Butchered at Birth and Tomb of the Mutilated are too brutal to be just considered as old school DM. The Bleeding is also good, but it sounds too modern IMO to be considered as old school.

Drawn and Quartered. One of the best death metal bands evah. They're fairly modern, but play very old school sounding death metal, in the vein of Immolation.

One of my new favorites that I just recently discovered is a now deceased band from Mexico called "Shub-Niggurath" Named after the mythical fertility God known as "The Black goat of the woods with a thousand young" from H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulu Mythos books.

Here's is a sample of their music, they are really good man.

This is for me the best old school death metal album of all time, Often imitated but never duplicated. Nothing else comes close, not even Altars of Madness or Effigy of the forgotten. Everything on this album just fits perfectly...the muddy production, crushing riffs, Craig Pillard's evil guttural vocals, and the overall evil atmosphere.

Demilich an awesome band from Finnland. They played a very twisted, technical and atmospheric style of death metal.
Feel free to correct me if im wrong but I think this faded into obscurity till it had a small revival via the internet, probably more well known now than what it was back in the day.

@agent orange. They are more well known now than when they released their album same applies for bans such Phlegethon, Nirvana 2002, Uncanny, Toxaemia, Rippikoulu and more of those sorts of Swedish and Finnish dm bands.

Yep... seems to be the case with a lot of Fin/Swe DM bands, Release a couple of demos, eps an album if they are lucky, then they split up... a lot of hidden gems to be found.

I don't like their 2nd album, sounds too commercial to me, But the 1st album "The red in the sky is ours" is one of my favorites.

The Red In The Sky Is Ours is great. But Slaughter Of The Soul is totally bland and watered down. I consider it one of the most, if not most, overrated albums in the history of metal. It's for people who actually can't enjoy proper death metal. SotS is plastic pretend dm lacking any bite or atmosphere whatsoever.

I think that statement applies to a lot of the Gothenburg bands, They are not "Melodic Death Metal" in the literal sense of the word... They are melodic no doubt but I would not consider them death metal or group them in with bands like Entombed or Dismember who can be melodic (mostly with their guitar solos) and play Death Metal, If you know what I mean.

I totally understand and know what you're saying. Even Dark Tranquillity doesn't play melodic death metal in that sense and they are the first to agree on that. Eucharist and Desultory at least play death metal which is melodic so does the Finnish Demigod.
I still don't understand how the Gothenburg (and other bands playing that style) got mislabelled as death metal when they have almost nothing to do with dm. Case here being Arch Enemy. Only thing deathish there are those lame grunts by their marketing trick Angela.
Musically nothing death metal in those sorts of bands at all.

I cannot tell you the amount of times I have been relentlessly mocked by my friends for saying basically what you have just said, I think a lot of people must think this way about it. Harsh Vocals + Melodic Riffs/Leads = Must be Melodic Death Metal (which is incorrect IMO) , A lot of the things that makes Death Metal what it is are ignored with the gothenburg bands (Atmosphere, Song Structure etc). Thanks mate for proving to me im not totally nuts .
