Hey guys, so I'm really into thrash metal, and I've been looking for some old-school death metal, along the lines of Death, Master, Morbid Angel, etc.

Just wondering if you can recommend anything, thanks.

I heard Brutality - Screams of Anguish a few weeks ago, a BEAST of a release. A perfect blend of old school Florida DM + technical DM.
Amazing.

I don't know if they have been mencioned before but:

Baphomet (I think they are from Florida)
Benediction
Demolition Hammer
Kreator
Obituary
Possesed
Slayer (Reign in blood for example....)
Sepultura (First albums)

If I remember more I'll tell you!

Ok... I'm sort of late here but fuck, Tribulation is a wonderful surprise to me. I remember checking them out when the album was released but somehow I didn't like it. But now that I'm more into the old school style of death metal I can really appreciate this baby.

Cool cd.

Just bought a cheap album from a band I didn't know called Kingdom.
Old-school Polish death metal. It's their debut album from 2008: Unholy Graveyard.
I only listened to it once, so no opinion yet, but everyone who's into old-school death: check it out.

The Horror is an amazing album, kind of reminds me of The Awakening by Merciless.

I know Dizzeke posted about them, but I will mention Morgoth. "Resurrection Absurd", "The Eternal Fall" and "Cursed", ESPECIALLY "Cursed" are landmarks of old school death metal. "Cursed" is basically the only old death metal album I listen to on a regular basis 20 years after its release (with an occasional spin of some Entombed and Dismember).
Yeah, I know, I should be kneeling in front of "Leprosy" and "Scream Bloody Gore", but somehow I don't feel compelled to listen to Death, as opposed to Morgoth.

Obituary: They excell at OS death metal with groove, able to abrubtly change the tempo and feeling of the song while maintaining an agressive flow. The vocals are not dark growls, but they are angry nonetheless. The End Complete and World Demise are my favourites so far.

But it's clear that without Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy there would have been no Curse

They don't even come close to those two Death albums imo. Morgoth were okay but always clearly second-tier. They missed the bite and innovation of early Death.

History question (since I wasn't around back then)
Were Asphyx and Autopsy examples of what you just wrote? I don't know how they were viewed back in the day. And both bands came back recently.

Imo CC with barnes were an awesome or at least very good and IMPORTANT for the genre Death Metal band... after "the bleeding" they went safe though...

Even if i dont like the music all that much,You are right I probably should have said they were important to the genre.. Its probably because i wasnt around when cannibal corpse was brand new so as i listen to them now they come off as monotonous for me.

I was around when CC was brand new and back then they were as monotonous to me as they are now. Generic boring DM just like Malevolent Creation, Benediction, Cancer and a whole slew of other English DM bands from back in the day (first two of course being American)

How come Malevolent Creation is generic? And, OP, check out this (Not fully old school, but FULL of old school):

I personally don't see anything special about them. Fail to see how they can contribute to death metal at all. Hell, I actually knew about their existence for just some weeks ago. And listening to a lot of songs by them I still stay "they are meh".

That's jsut me though, I believe there are some people who like them but I fail to understand why.

I understand that. But they're good, trust me. Check out their 1992 Retribution album for a good start. Listened to that album for 4 times in 2 days. Still, it ain't sticking in my brain yet.
