Hey guys, so I'm really into thrash metal, and I've been looking for some old-school death metal, along the lines of Death, Master, Morbid Angel, etc.

Just wondering if you can recommend anything, thanks.

@Lord Reigner
I think Sulphur Aeon is reminiscent in the sense that it has a lot of atmosphere and the feel of the album is very epic.

I agree. But I also think that the vocalists sings kinda like Jon Nodveidt.

Still find it baffling that some people think this band is black / death metal (MA, Youtube comments etc). Incredible band at any rate though, just not at all black metal.

Well it definitely paved the way for grindcore and it definitely had grindcore in it, but it also had death metal in it as well, Horrified was featured in Decibel's top 100 death metal albums of all time, I think it was 8.

doesn't mean too much since it also featured Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride (although both their debuts were heavily influenced by death metal, so I can somehow get into that) But ffs they also included Sepultura - Schizophrenia which is pure thrash and has nothing to do with death metal, they might as well have included Slayer in that list.

Yeah but Sepultura had death metal influences in their music, which is why they're labeled as death thrash, and in 1987 the only thing that was death metal at the time was Seven Churches which Schizophrenia kind of sounds like, so at the time maybe it could have been death metal, but now a days its definitely not death metal.

Rather good. Extremely cavernous stuff.

This also sounds excellent. Unlike other touted bands these guys do seem to have a few black metal passages and riffs going on, as well as some nice creepy, melodic soloing etc.

it's a great little demo, which was already rperessed once this year and that edition is also sold out now. Another good old scholl death metal is Haunted by the US band Rude.

I am actually looking at both the Bones - Demo 2013 2nd edition and Rude - Haunted demo cassettes now. They are right in front of me Btw, Patrick Mameli of Pestilence does a guest solo n the title song of the Haunted demo.

I've been listening to Morbius' "The Shades Below" a little more lately and I swear, it's one of the lost masterpieces of the classic death metal era. Very unique and very dark. It's a shame that this one is long out of print.

Malthusian sound ok but still too rooted in Black Metal for my liking.

(Incidentally this means it doesn't sound old school DM to me - after all BM was developed as a counter to Death Metal. I never regarded Dissection as DM. The whole blackened DM thing makes me think Zyklon and Behemoth in early 2000s and not Stockholm/Florida 1988-95).

I liked ZOM musically but they need to shoot the singer or at least get rid of those awful effects they've washed the vocals in.

I don't hear any black metal in them. This is like people calling Grave Miasma et al black, despite them have nothing stylistically in common with black metal. It's cavernous, dark, evil etc. but style wise shares nothing in common. Dissection were always more blackened melodeath to my ears, so nothing death metal there either.

Having just listened to that Grave Miasma song posted above, they sound more Black than Death to me - in particular guitar tone and that overall "cavernous, dark, evil" atmosphere you refer too. Even the faster drums are reminiscent of Black Metal.

To me "old school" DM refers to the styles originated in the 1988-95 period and in particular Florida, Stockholm and more brutal DM ala Suffocation.

To me these are all natural modern progression from the likes of Incantation's brand of doomy death metal, who are very much old school and not at all black and where that cavernous sound (probably) originated from. As I say it may have a murky and grim tone and atmosphere but that doesn't make it black metal when the riffs and progressions are nothing like black metal bands.

But I think music should be classified based on its ingredients and not the effect it has on the listener. "cavernous, dark, evil" is not something you could prove, because it's the feeling you get from their sound.
GM utilizes dm approach to create cavernous music, and it makes them death metal.
