When I first heard Wingthors Hammer (Equilibrium) I was, like: This is the kind of music I always wanted, as if I had it written down somewhere in the back of my brain.

I remember first hearing silent night bodom night (C.O.B) years ago on the bus and it changed me completely. Without metal i would probably be some wigger pretending to be black.

Now you're just some freak pretending to be a rockstar

Blind Guardian just blew my mind when I first listened to them. I had never really cared much about music before, and the only metal I had really heard was mainstream nu metal and metalcore (which I still don't like). It seemed almost like this music was written just for me. I know some people have problems with Hansi's voice, but to me it is just so unique, so powerful, and so expressive. I love all of their albums, but Imaginations from the Other Side is the album I measure all other power metal against.

Windir is my best of best of best of all metal bands for all times. IMO Windir has viking element, but they are far more good than typical folk/viking bands. Windir is more epic than other all common folk/viking bands. Windir blend terrific viking/folk element with black element to create a very epic atmosphere, typical in 1184.

one of the main reasons why i think Windir is an incredible band, is the fact that Valfar wrote Arntor BY HIMSELF. the simple fact that he wrote that music by himself is mind boggling, at least in my opinion. the other band members are INSANELY talented as well and are a showacse of Valfar's eye for talent. he got the best musicians to play the best sounding and well composed music that i've heard recently.

im a big fan of when Valfar made all the music himself. i would choose that era but only because it fuckin manly to write epic music like that by yourself. i also think that when Valfar decided to bring in the other members that Windir became better because he got DAMN GOOD musicians to play his music. have you seen their sognametal dvd? its proof that Valfar got some of the, at least in my opinion, best individual musicians i've heard in awhile, especially their drummer.

I totally agree, Windir is so perfect when becoming a band literally. I havent watched Sogna DVD, just viewed some shows of Windir in youtube. Really good show, they wear corspepaint and make very dark illumination. The sound of quality is very good. About the Sogna DVD, does it include Valfar's brother in the show ?

yeha, Valfar's brother, Vegard is in the DVD and he is a MASSIVE BEAST of an individual. seriously, there are videos from that dvd on youtube, watch it. Vegard sings "Blodssvik" and some other songs i cant remember. once i get money, im buying the sognametal dvd, simply because i think its one of the best live performances i have ever seen, drunk or sober. the sound quality on the dvd is AWESOME to say the very lease and i highly recommend it. when they play 1184, its NUUUTS.

Really captivate me, I would get that dvd someday. Thanks for recommend, I know you are very infatuated by the band and their stuff.

I'd have to say Tool made a very big impact on me. I'dbeen flooding my ears with trash metal for years and a mate gave me Undertow. I was blown away. And thus my love for Tool has continued (ok that was a bit sappy!)

I remember when I was 15, I was convinced it couldn't get anymore evil or brutal than Iron Maiden. I was a total Eddie-holic. Then I head Cannibal Corpse's "Tomb Of The Mutilated." Being a total necrophile, completely obsessed with Halloween and gore, Cannibal Corpse opened a whole new demention for me. I never really knew what "Death Metal" meant. I just assumed shitty bands like Slipknot were "Death Metal" since that's what a lot of dumb kids at school called them. When I first heard what real Death Metal was, I shit myself. There are two stages in my metal life so far...before Cannibal, and after.

Cannibal Corpse is by no-means my favorite band, but I owe them much, since they were my gateway band. They led me into the world of more extreme metal. They opened the door with Death, and then led me to Black, Goregrind, Doom, Powerviolence, etc. They also taught me to seek out and search genres on my own, so that I wouldn't take everyone else's word on what genre a band belonged too or what band was the "epitome" of a said genre.

Even though this topic is about music hindsite, I give it thumbs up.... I think! :-)

That happend to me when I first heard Iron Maiden's album the number of the beast. I was like wow, now this is great music, how come I didnt know about this before. That was probably the first time that happend.

Never thought about that. I guess I have always been searching for something new, something much closer to my "ideal" music in general, but never succeeded. The ideal music would be this status when there's no need for anything else, anything new - my wishes would be fulfilled, but, as we all know, that will never happen. And I can't imagine how it would be if I didn't want to check out a new band too.
Anyway, I'm not scared if there suddenly comes up something absolutely awesome, although, maybe I'm a fan of few bands... It doesn't matter. It's normal and I don't have to think: "How could I let it pass by?" It's not like I would be terrified of thinking about my past and what music earlier I used to listen to. Maybe after ten years I will be listening to something completely different, but I won't think: "Oh, I shouldn't listen to metal X years ago... I had plenty of time for searching this kind of music which now I'm listening to!"
Another point - I don't like just one band, they're many, and there is no one in the first place which has changed my life or something.

And how I used to live without some of my currently favorite bands? Easy! Then I didn't think about these bands, besides I thought I'm listening to the best I could get.

I honestly wonder how I hadn't stumbled across Arcturus sooner. In hindsight it might well be a blessing that I've only discovered them in the last year or so. I think if I'd listened to their music, say, three-to-four years ago I may not have appreciated them quite as much (I was in a serious melodeath groove).

Having said that I'm very grateful for having stumbled across them. It's since allowed me to discover the strange beauty of Ulver and delve into a complex world of avantgarde silliness (strictly talking about Arcturus in this sense - just look at what they wore for gigs!),

How could I have lived without Slayer. They are the reason I listen to metal Thank you Tom, Kerry, Jeff, and Dave. you guys are KINGS.... Also chocolate and licorice. I don't know if I could live without that either

This happened to me too! I knew about Coroner but never listened to them. (I know them for more then 15 Years!)
One day (few years ago) I was bored and asked a friend for some trash albums.
There where some Sodom, Testament...and 2 Coroner albums included.
I played them without thinking and from the start it was amazing!
I lost so many years thinking Coroner was bad and when I finally listened them, I realized it was some of the best trash metal ever.

Aww man, there are tons of em. I clearly remember one, which is Graveworm. I had this sample cd from Nuclear Blast right, and after listening to some samples from the band, engraved in Black to be more precise, i was blown away. There are just tons of example around, it's still a deja vu that happens to me these days.

I read this forum a lot but have never posted before.. however, seeing wintersun hasnt been mentioned in three pages, i couldn't simply resist!

Wintersun... i tried to describe it by words, then deleted all that i typed because my humble english doesn't do it justice..

When I first heard Sad Wings of Destiny, my life changed. It was like a portal opening into another realm. Literally. It was that great.

Gorguts' Obscura album really changed my perspective. First listen I thought it was nothing but a wall of noise, but for some reason I couldn't leave it alone. I listened to it again and again...and then my ears opened and I could hear the absolutely amazing skill and musicianship that went into creating that wall of noise. I gained a new appreciation for the artistry that can be expressed through extremes of dissonance and polyrhythm. Really hearing Obscura enabled me to go back and listen to a lot of other dissonant music I had dismissed earlier with a new appreciation.

When i started to listen to metal i only liked folk metal and some Symphonic bands, but then i heard of Summoning because they are from austria and are that famous i had to give them a try and listened to "Long Lost To Where No Pathway Goes" and it's still my favourite song of all time!

There are so many songs that I know now and so many great musicians I have met that I don't know what I would do if I suddenly went back to the way I was before I really got into metal. In 2001 a friend of mine (r.i.p.) let me listen to Pantera and it completely changed my perspective on music and what kind of person to be. It was the first metal show I ever went to, but certainly not the last. When hes passed 'Hollow' from Pantera was our anthem for him, as well as songs like 'Watching Over Me' from Iced Earth. It was then I realized that metal was the only genre left with REAL talent and heart. My horizons have grown immensely since then and metal has just become a way of life for me... no other way to explain it.

I guess hearing Wintersun gave me that feeling...because its the first band Ive heard to combine just about every element in metal that I love into one band.

About 2 weeks ago i saw Amon Amarth's Wrath Of The Norsemen and since that very hour it became one of my favourites.
It was a rare happening that a band became my fave so fast.
I can't believe how i could listen to metal without knowing them!
