The Big 4... of British Heavy Metal

I was wondering, there's the Big 4 of U.S. Thrash Metal, so what would be the U.K. equivalent?

My first thought is Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead and Saxon. But some of these emerged much earlier than others and the Thrash Big 4, so what other bands emerged a bit later (80's as opposed to 70's) that could be considered part of the Big 4 of British Heavy Metal?

Maybe we can make a definitive MetalStorm decision?

*Sorry if something like this has been posted before, it probably has, but I tried the search function and couldn't find anything.

And there is no way that black sabbath are heavy metal
their first album was doom metal but all the rest were rock n roll

Easy, Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Motorhead

Exactly. Those 4 had the biggest impact on heavy metal of any British band.

Nothing big about them AT ALL. They never sold out large venues and still don't manage to sell out anything. Their only claim to fame is that they are a huge influence on Metallica.

That and the fact that Lightning To The Nations was a good album

But really... Its, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon and (if excluding Sabbath) Motorhead.... venom would probably come after and then Raven or Angel Witch

EDWARD THE HEAD
1. Iron Maiden
2. Black Sabbath
3. Judas Priest
4. Motorhead

In the sense of how big they are/were no other band comes close really, maybe Saxon but that's it.

If The Big 4 counts after album sales, the list would look like this I guess (considering you think of Led Zep and Def Leppard as Heavy Metal):
Led Zeppelin
Iron Maiden
Def Leppard
Black Sabbath

My personal list would be:
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Motörhead
...considering they've all had a huge influence and are still active, making albums and out on tours.

The thread is called "The BIG 4 of British heavy Metal" just like there is the big four of thrash which consists of the the at the time BIGGESDT thrash bands, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax. Saying Havok should be part of that is as ludicrous as saying Raven and Angel Witch are amongst the biggest 4 english heavy metal bands.

There is nothing funny in opinion of that guy. I think that sabbath before DIO is a pure Hard Rock. There is nothing that can reliete then to Heavy Metal (In season with Ozzy)

No matter what you're trying to say my poor fellow, Saying that black sabbath is not heavy metal, is not an opinion its denying facts -_- its like saying, I don't think the earth circles around the sun, that is not an opinion... Facts is, the earth circles around the sun and guess what ? Black Sabbath is Heavy Metal -_-

In no order and only in my opinion:

1. Iron Maiden
2. Black Sabbath
3. Judas Priest
4. Motorhead

Make the list a top 10 and I'd add in no particular order:

5. Saxon
6. Deep Purple
7. Napalm Death
8. Carcass
9. Venom
10. Led Zeppelin

I wish Bolt Thrower was in there but I don't think they're as influential as Carcass or Napalm Death.

(Agreed with your first top 4)

But I mean, Carcass, Napalm and Bolt Thrower ... Isn't that Grind and Death Metal, I thought we were only
talking about pure-on Heavy Metal, here.

If you look at the rest of the thread, people have mentioned Cradle of Filth, Anathema, My Dyinng Bride and Paradise Lost. The opening post doesn't specify pure heavy metal either.

I'd say CoF are nearly there in top 10

Tough sale. Led Zeppelin and Def Leppard certainly have heavy metal elements, but its not as clear cut as in the case of Iron Maiden, Priest, and Mottorhead.

I think a better question would be who are the Big 4 of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. In this case its a very easy list:

1. Iron Maiden
2. Judas Priest (pre-dated NWOBHM but embraced the style)
3. Mottorhead
4. Saxon

If all metal genres then I would go with:
Carcass
Napalm Death
Judas Priest
Venom

Just the NWOBHM bands then:
Judas Priest
Venom
Iron Maiden
Motorhead
