Probably Bolt Thrower. I also love Vader, Decapitated, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Behemoth, Amon Amarth, and Nile.

Written by JohnDoe on 09.06.2012 at 07:05 Nobody mentions Obituary? Their albums between 1990 and 1994 are great and death metal is not even my thing.
Because this is about the best death metal band, not the best death metal releases.

I was just saying what albums I like, but doesn't Obituary deserve a mention? I'm not an expert, listeners of the genre should know, right?

After Cause of Death they just got progressively worse. A discography mired in harmless drivel bolstered by a strong debut and an even better follow-up.

and yet their lowest rating here on MS is 7.1; it shows that people really love them.

A 7.1 on Metal Storm is very low. The average rating on this site is around 7.9/8.0. The only reason that 7.1 isn't a 5.1 is because they're a death metal band and not a nu metal or deathcore band.

I was thinking about what 7.1 really means, my mistake then.
An "8" is a very good rating, I rate 8 albums that I absolutely love.

You still need to figure it out your "2009" posts and ratings considering fanboyism is been evolved from you, which you now completely refrained from.

a strong debut and an even better follow-up.
I beg to differ I find Slowly We Rot to be slightly better than Cause... probably due to the fact that Slowly almost has no lyrics to it whatsoever, just a few lines here and there and the rest is just John's throat as instrument making noises instead of words and sentences.

I'll side with Troy - I think Cause Of Death is stronger. I actually really love The End Complete (my first Obituary record) as well.
after that they fall off rather drastically. whereas Bolt Thrower got tighter and better, they seemed to just stagnate a tad.

Even though I don't buy a lot of death metal, I do listen to it quite a lot. I'd say Nile (the newest stuff doesn't sound that good though) and Vader are my favorites. Also, Communion by Septicflesh as an album if we're counting symphonic/atmospheric whatever you wanna call it.

I'd say Aborted, even before saying Death. I don't know why, maybe just because the first death metal band I ever listened to.

In all seriousness, I'd go with any of the following three: Bolt Thrower, Immolation, Vader.
Bolt Thrower started out as a sort of death/grind band and worked their way up from there. They grew immensely over the years but never completely changed, similar to bands like Amon Amarth, where more of the same is pleasing to fans, even critical ones.
Immolation is an instant classic, and just about everything they've released is death metal gold. They don't release 50 compilation albums and singles, which adds to their professionalism and affirms fans that their focus is always on new material, which is always high quality stuff.
Bolt Thrower and Immolation are also quite a rarity in Death Metal as their later material is often regarded as superior to their first 2 albums. With Obituary, Entombed, Deicide, Morbid Angel etc., fans usually say the first 2 albums are the best, and maybe say 'the later stuff is good but not as good as the classic early stuff' - but with Bolt Thrower and Immolation, they've not only stuck to their guns but also improved.

Not bmy cup of tea, both death band and death metal overall. Perhaps "Amon Amarth", or "Possessed", when I want something old school. I also like Some Cannibal Coprse and Morbid Angel stuff.

I'm really digging a lot of the material Luciferion released. Although, they've only released two albums so I doubt it's a good enough resume for ''Best Death Metal Band'' title.
I'd probably go for Immolation.
