Well basically just list out your favourite artists. It doesn't have to be artists who work with only metal bands.
Also post links of their work or links to their sites, blogs etc

For me I would have to say

John Dyer - Baroness, Pig Destroyer, Black Tusk, Kylesa, Kvelertak and a few more.
http://www.myspace.com/johndyerbaizley
This guy is awesome, he's pretty much one of my favourites. I love pretty much all his artwork. You can make out a John Dyer as soon as you see it. He's got a very distinctive style with the use of beautiful women, some might say overuse, but i have no complains

Malleus Rock Art Lab( Urlo, Lu, Poia) - Ufomammut, Swans, Kyuss, Roadburn, Supernatural Cat
http://malleusdelic.wordpress.com/
www.malleusdelic.com
Ok these guys are the best at screens, I mean i haven't seen better work coming out in while. I just love everything they put out. Their posters are done with such care and they really put a lot of work into each design. Again these guys have a thing for women a lot of beautiful women in their designs.

Brian Mercer- Clutch, Eyehategod, Black Tusk, Zoroastor, Lamb of God and a lot more
http://mercerrock.com/index.php
This guy again does mainly posters and flyers for bands and festivals. Again he's got a unique style with the use of skulls and sculptures.

Ok I'm going to stop typing now and just give you links.

Florian Bertmer - Agoraphobic Nosebleed, 16.
http://florianbertmer.blogspot.com/

David Dandrea - Shrinebuilder, OM, Agalloch, Ludicra

The guys in the Malleus group are actually part of Ufomammut and Dvid D'Andrea did the artwork for this year's Roadburn. and has also done great work on Asunder and Graves At Sea albums.
Totally love his style. Also love Malleus btw. They have a nice retrospect bok out as well.

Most of my favourite artists are from the sludge scene anyway. I love how they give as much importance to art as the music.

I'm actually surprised that this topic isn't as active as I hoped. Thought there would be more people on here who enjoyed the art side of metal as much as I do

Cover art wise most metal tends to be atrocious, marred by the same cliches you see everywhere, forests, skulls, garish photoshopping and the like. However more undergroundy, extra-metal stuff has some great thoughtful covers, on some specific distros I can spend hours just browsing through the artwork lusting after the albums just for the way they look. Paradigms Recordings is a good example of this: http://www.paradigms-recordings.com/store.html

Seldon Hunt is amazing if you like completely insane abstracts: http://www.seldonhunt.com/

There is also a big difference between the design of an album cover and the actual art. Bands that commission or get rights to actual art pieces are one thing - but how it is created into the cover is another. It is very easy to pick a great artist and slap a logo on top of the art. I like your link !J.O.O.E.!, those guys remind me of how jazz labels handle cover art.

I've heard the seldon hunt name before, can't remember where. Some nice stuff on there, but some of them i felt were just to chaotic to look at.

I know what you mean, though some of those might look good and might also represent the album well. I generally prefer when the whole thing is done from scratch.
For our cover art (on my profile) we just used 2 photographs that our vocalist had taken and made the art, and then slapped the logo on it

Ahh the guy who did the nevermore stuff. Never knew his name. Checked out his other work, really cool. Didn't know he had done so much. Thanks for that.
Oh this guy won best cover art for Dead soul tribe's January tree for one of the previous MS awards. Well I don't think they mentioned him in there though
As for the new Opeth, I didn't like it as much as their previous stuff. I mean its great artwork, but a little out of place for them I felt. I know Akerfeldt is a big prog rock fan so maybe that something to do with the cover being more classic prog rock styled? Unless they have taken a new direction with the music as well. Will have to wait for the album to find out.

That Khlyst cover is beabsolutely gorgeous. Heh I'm sort of surprised we have so similar tastes in artwork judging by the link. I never understood "love's burial ground" though... it confuses me a lot because it just looks like awful copy paste and I don't even know what I'm looking at, a woman, a train station... don't really know. Never "got" the Pearl Jam either then again I know shit about Pearl Jam. But yeah... I agree with most of the link.

That's what I really like about Love's Burial Ground one. It's a random mishmash of images but despite knowing of it for ages it was only recently that I spotted the image of the girl. I like underground tube systems too, it's just a very random thing to put on a cover art. Same for the Pearl Jam one really, it's just totally random.

I don't know about the 9th... it's pretty awesome, I suppose it's the same dude that makes the Converge artworks, his style is quite unique.
