This album, I think, was one of the albums that defined the gothic metal genre. It has plenty of nice songs but I still prefer to listen to "Gothic", "Shades of God" or "Icon".

The only thing better than this release is when they play it live.

when they played the entire album live it was terrible. The band made huge mistakes in every single song. I love tha album but the live rendition o it two years ago was just totally terrible.

Damn it - Seems I must give a better listen - I thought the 'offical release of the April gig in UK was quite great!

I know people who went to that gig and said it was terrible. They saw the dvd and it was immediately clear that the sound on that dvd had been doctored with. All the mistakes which were there at the Original gig were nowhere to be found and all of a sudden Nick also sounded great. So, clearly a case of overdubbing (which is actually done to almost ALL live dvd's tbh.)

Ahh.... indeed then. Yes, listening to a production can be (usually is) quite different than the actual experience. Thanks for the comments Marcel!

Excellent, Im getting more stuff from this band as we speak, and this album is fucking great. Paradise Lost rules.

Started off strong then mutated into this pop-like....I have no idea... I've always loved "Shades Of God" though.

Gotta wonder the same thing... Don't hear a trace of pop at all. Simply (great) goth(ic) metal/rock with some psychedelic moments here and there. Great shit.

Well, what do you know... I totally agree with you.
Shades of God is easily my favourite album by PL as well. Draconian Times and Icon are pretty poppy if you ask me. Extremely accessible stuff. Just when some of these songs start to get interesting they're already over.
The genre-tag here is hilarious... "death doom metal"?

Oh... I guess you are the kind of guys who use the term "pop" for something accessible. Huh.

Yeah, pop to me is something sugary sweet and overly melodic. This album may be easily listenable but it's far from pop. If this is pop then what's flower metal?

Is this already one of the rules of being a Metal Stormer? If not it should be. Something like: "1. Anything you find accessible must be referred to as pop music because it makes your taste in music look more sophisticated than your peers."

Is this album really Doom Metal? Once Solemn sounds very positive to me (I'm not saying that it's bad).

Not doom nor death, plain gothic metal. There are still hints of doom but I wouldn't tag this as such.

Honestly, I love some pop music I just thought that that level of cheese has no place in a gothic death doom album.

Despite what it says above in the album profile... There's not an iota of death on this one. Hell I'd say the gothic elements are ever stronger than the doom ones. Also much more rock than metal going on here. That together with the melodies and psychedelic vibes makes the album sound the way I expected it to sound the first time I got it. I'm not trying to change your opinion. I'm just saying " no place in a gothic death doom album" is wrong.

What psychedelic vibes?
It certainly is metal, way more than rock and there are some slight hints of death in it.

Well, I personally get some vibes during the soloings. I still see no death on this album though and neither pop for that matter.

Certainly a classic in Gothic Metal this. A bit front loaded, as the highlights are all to be found among the first five tracks. Besides, one the most beautiful album cover arts I am aware of.

With Icon, these are the top albums of the band, although Draconian has a better production and rich sound. It is a part of my top 30 albums.

Nope, it's not just you. Loads of people say that and especially said that at the time of the relase of Draconian Times.

I listened to this for the first time a few days ago while waiting for their latest. As a Paradise Lost noob I assumed this would be a good place to start given that it is their highest rated album here, but unfortunately this album did absolutely nothing for me. Rarely, if ever before have I been so unmoved by an album with such a high rating. I'm almost tempted to give this a 6/10, but I think I will give it a few more listens first before rating it. After all, some say it is a grower-type album.
