Quake - 15 years on, "Epsilon" build - free download for Win/Mac/Linux
==========================================------------------------------

I've been browsing the latest graphical/sound quake mods recently, and have managed to put together a pretty neat build using LordHavoc's darkplaces, rygel's ultra textures packs, the reforged packs and a variety of Seven's mods, to play the original Quake.
The problem comes when you have to browse the quakeone forums, stumbling to find the posts which detail what cvars and what configs/files you have to overwrite etc in order to get each mod to work. I literally spent as much time getting the mods working as playing the game!
So, with that in mind, I've built together a pretty happy-looking build of quake original called 'epsilon' for everybody to download without getting into the hassle of config files and reading every post in the quakeone forums.

OLDER BUILD SUPPORT:
===========================================================================


For the older builds there were only two versions, one an 'Ultra' build for a halfway modern setup (dual core 2.5ghz and upwards, 2GB ram and upwards, geforce 7600GS and upwards) - essentially the same as the current 'ultra' build but without bump mapping enabled.
And the 'Medium' build which was a much less optimised version of the current medium build.



Installation and running:
========---------========

Just unzip the zip file to somewhere on your computer and run the "darkplaces" executable.
Go to options, go into video config and change your resolution to taste.
That's all!

I've included executables for Windows, Linux and Mac in these packs, so you should be able to run it on any of those (I've only tested in Windows- no guarantees for others).

Since these are multipart zip files, you'll need an unzipping program like 7-zip (freeware, Mac/Win/Linux) or similar to unzip.




Special instructions for installing under Linux:
==================-----------------=============

1. Linux is case sensitive, so you may need to rename a "ID1" directory to "id1" if it's currently uppercase, otherwise darkplaces gives you an error that it can't find any game data.
2. Zip files don't preserve which files are executable in linux, so you need to make the darkplaces program you want to run executable (eg "chmod 755 darkplaces-linux-x86_64-sdl" in a terminal).

The download cannot include the full quake pak0.pak and pak1.pak files, for legal reasons (that'd be pra-riracy!), so I've put in the shareware quake pak0.pak (ie. the first quarter of the game) and you can buy full quake off of steam for about $5-$10 depending on the day, and grab the full-version pak0.pak and pak1.pak files from that. If you're using steam the pak0.pak & pak1.pak files will be in your steam/steamapps/common/quake/id1 folder.
Also for legal reasons, the download doesn't include the original NiN soundtrack, so I've included my own retrotastic "Diabolipak" music replacement pack which I hope you'll enjoy. You can always find the original soundtrack around if you really want it.



Performance notes:
========---------

If you're running the 'ultra' build and you get performance issues in areas with stained-glass lighting, delete the ID1\zreflecting_overload.pk3 file. You lose the stained glass stuff, but get your FPS back.
Otherwise if you get performance issues, try going into the game's options/video config and either dropping resolution, antialiasing, texture quality, anisotropic filtering down, or turn texture compression on.



Bugs:
==----

If you experience problems with black textures or black creatures, try turning off texture compression in options/video config - on some video cards, and with some video card drivers, it can cause problems.



Bump-mapping:
==========----

If you have a REALLY FAST MACHINE and an older (7-12-2011 and prior) build of epsilon you may enable bump-mapping (newer 'ultra' builds have bump-mapping enabled by default). You'll take a massive performance hit - we're talking FPS being decimated by half or even 3 quarters - but it does look different - better, more "organic", somehow. To do so, go to http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/index.html and download the most recent 'auto-build' (not the most recent stable version). Extract that into your quake directory, then edit your id1/config.cfg file and add the following line:
"r_glsl_offsetmapping" "1"

Then you'll have bump-mapping - for better or worse. Personally I don't feel it makes an enormous amount of difference, or at the very least not enough to offset the performance damage. But to each their own. To offset the performance decrease, try turning 'texture compression' on in video config.

Mission Pack 1 - Scourge of Armagon - Epsilon Build Addon pack
==========================================----------------------

I've done a lot of work to make sure that this and the other mission pack, dissolution of eternity, look a little different to Quake Vanilla.
There's different enemy models, different water, sky effects, a different (transperant) heads-up display and menu graphics. Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks in particular to the QRP Team (Quake Revitalisation Project) for the great wall/floor/etc textures for MP1!

This addon pack for Mission pack 1 requires both the Quake epsilon build above, the download below and a full version of Quake Mission pack 1 (Scourge of Armagon) - there are no shareware versions of the mission packs.

As mentioned you'll need the Quake epsilon build installed to your computer.
Download the addon pack zip above that matches your build (ultra or medium).
Unzip the zip file to your quake root directory (ie. not into the ID1 directory).
Copy the pak0.pak file from the "hipnotic" folder in your scourge of Armagon mission pack (which you (of course) own, having downloaded it through steam or ID software) to your quake epsilon build's "hipnotic" folder.
Then run the game by starting darkplaces with -hipnotic after the executable name. I've included a batch file (quake - scourge of Armagon.bat) to do this in windows, if you're on mac/linux, you'll need to figure it out for yourself.
Taadaa!

If you're using steam the pak0.pak file will be in your steam/steamapps/common/quake/hipnotic folder. The soundtrack is not included with the steam download but can be found around the net.



Bugs:
==---

There is one bug that I am aware of with the darkplaces engine, which is the gold door at the end of the first level. If you do not approach it in the correct manner, it will not open.
Workaround is: if you move to the left side of the door and slide slowly to the right while pushing into the door, you'll get it to open.
The bug also occurs in HIP3M4 (The Gauntlet) on the Silver door. If you approach it running or to the left of it, it won't open. Approach it slowly and from the right. These are the only two bugs I have encountered in quake and it's mission packs under the darkplaces engine.

Epsilon Build Addon pack - Mission Pack 2 - Dissolution of Eternity
==========================================---------------------------


I've tried to make this mission pack a completely different experience to Quake Vanilla and Mission Pack 1, with different models and textures for as many elements as is humanly possible. I've even changed the sound setup to a slightly different set (Seven's). Personally I think Dissolution's a great mission pack, much more inventive than the first one. Don't know why people didn't like it initially!
Having said that, there're still some textures that haven't been redone - mainly some wall/ground textures.
Thanks especially to Seven for the interesting ghost-sword death animations, amongst other things!

Alright - so, big news, big changes.
The 07122011 version is finally uploaded of course and is working fine.
Also uploaded is the medium version of the same build.
The ultra version now has a torrent courtesy of another user which is listed in the main post (I've used filesplat to host the .torrent file as it's a direct link rather than an ad-filled paradise).

AND - my Pièce de résistance (or technically, a compilation of Pièce de résistance's by other people) -
the new 07122011 Mission pack 1 and Mission pack 2 addons- while the original version of these were fine, they didn't add or change too much in the way of graphics.
Well, that's all changed - in these you have updated, better graphics for many of the new elements/monsters, different graphics for skies/water/most things to the main game, and an overall different experience. So I recommend downloading them even if you've already downloaded the 28112011 versions of the addons.

These will be my final uploads, as I'm pretty sure I've pissed off my flatmates enough
But I think they're pretty great.
If you want further updates, you can always head to the quakeone forums for future updates to individual packages.

Final post:
there're two new(er) mission pack downloads-
these are updated with the pre-release re-texturing from the "Quake Reforged" project for the new monsters in each of the two mission packs.
See the second and third posts for the new download links. Hosted mainly on 4shared since megaupload upload system isn't working at the moment.
There's also a few additions I made to the addons while I had the chance.
Want to see how much better it looks with the QRP skins?

Thanks to several members from the Quakeone forums...

One more thing:
if you want to download the most recent auto-build of the darkplaces engine from http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/index.html and also completely decimate your framerate, you can enable bump-mapping in your config.cfg by inserting the following line:
"r_glsl_offsetmapping" "1"

As mentioned this will ass-up your fps by half or even 3/4's, depending on your machine. If you have a super-fast computer, you might handle it, or you might have to turn texture compression on. Or stop playing.

The difference is minimal but it does add a certain 'organic' quality to the look of the game - here is a fairly mediocre example, but the effect varies:
