The Best Industrial / Cyber / Electronic Metal Album Of 2012

777 - Cosmography is without a doubt the quietest and perhaps the least challenging of the entire trilogy of Blut Aus Nord. The dissonance and abrasive wall of sound lightly vanishes and gives way to other new elements. You can expect to find electronic beats, spoken passages, apocalyptic chants, industrial machinery, clean vocals, crystal clear delayed guitars and even some little amounts of doom. Is it eclectic or heterogeneous? Hell no. It's actually a really articulated record and mostly everything is laid in its right place. Is it the best record of the trilogy? I don't know but it's a really beautiful closure. I like to think this kind of music is like seeing a movie, since the visual aspect is a really significant part while listening. In those terms the climax of this trilogy is not disturbing or creepy but rather cathartic and desolating. It's almost like a post-apocalyptic scene where you can see the whole modern world falling apart or at least the human part of it.

Blut Aus Nord is a band that often works in trilogies. And just like they’re currently in the process of closing another trilogy, let’s look at how they closed the best one in the past.

Played it three times in a row, there were a couple of man-tears moments and lots of eargasms. Dunno why you guys aren't happy with the clean vocals, they worked just fine for me. I still see myself liking this even more and will probably end up on the top of my 2012 favorite albums list.

I agree with you. This is transcendental and heavenly, so much unlike The Desanctification, but still very Blut Aus Nord-sounding. The vocals evoke a feel of mystique throughout the whole thing. Those at the beginning of XV are quite an experiment, and they're really good if you understand French.
This seconds only Agruss' Morok in my favorites this year.

Indeed, it's calming, beautiful and uplifting and this is a side of BaN I like. I adore the aggressiveness of Liber but I have to say the 777 trilogy is the one I prefer.

I would put it in the same league, it's totally different from the previous two but equally brilliant imo

To me some of the experiments simply failed. The vocals is the major one and the one that just put it down enough for me to say that it's easily the least good. Everything else is pretty fine although I'm surprised how sugary it is. I expected more bite since it doesn't suit them. BAN is at their best when they fuck around with melodies and dissonance. That's their real strength.

I'm surprised how sugary it is.

That's the main reason I liked it. The ethereal, majestic vibe would have failed if Cosmosophy were dissonant.

We obviously have a very different opinion of what ethereal or majestic means... In my dictionary those words don't have to mean "sweet".

This album is too "nice", doesn't not fit them or the triology itself for that matter.

I seem to have a whole different opinion than you I like the clean vocals, I like how sugary it is and I think it completes the trilogy in the greatest of fashions. I love BaN because of the multiple "personalities" they display, their diversity is endless and still you can identify their sound at an instance.

The album is fine. I actually think it's very good. It just pisses me off to see it as part of a triology which does not fit in. I have zero problems with their multiple pesonalities (although their generic BM works are just ok)... I just wanted consistency in the concept. I'm still gonna buy it and then listen to all three in a row since I believe something might happen but I doubt my opinion will drastically change.

Style-wise, I think this a perfect closure to the trilogy and wouldn't have it any other way.

Quality-wise, it comes off somewhat underwhelming and not.... uh.... "epic" enough (I'm not sure what's the word I'm looking for).

"Sect(s)": 7,5/10 (a solid first chapter but sometimes too much convoluted for my tastes)
"The Desanctification": 8/10
"Cosmosophy": 8,5/10 (and it may grow with further listens)

The final part of the trilogy turns out to be my favourite as well. Much less dissonance, heavenly atmosphere with some disquieting moments that don't sound out of place, huge songs that unfold slowly but elegantly... I fucking love this.
Favourite track: all of them except the last one, good but a bit repetitive. The ambient outro gave me shivers, however.

Grandiose in scale?

I haven't sat down and really listened to it (just heard bits and pieces of the first track)

But based on the comments thus far, my Grand Unified 777 Theory I believe seems to be coming true (few pages back).

4th on the 2012 Top Chart.....let's see how long this lasts....

I was pretty excited about this so I downloaded the leaked version of the album.
It didn't disappoint. On the first listen I was completely immersed,it sounded good,I had that feeling I always get when I enjoy metal.
Out of all songs I like Epitome XIV the most.
I didn't really like the other parts so I'm only going to rate this one.

Just like their demo to be honest. People went absolutely loopy crap over it (see Metal Archives reviews) despite being pretty ordinary sounding to me.

MetalRec-Grutle

Blut Aus Nord has a way of synthesizing and revitalizing elements of past albums with each new release, as if it were a software upgrade. I used to think Memoria Vetusta II was the pinnacle of this phenomenon, reuniting the style of their early works with the relentless, lifeless (in a good way) industrial experimentation of the works which made them a household name in black metal.

In comes the third and final installment of the 777 series, entitles Cosmosophy, which can be translated as the study or knowledge of the Universe. Now, concept aside, since I have little to no way of knowing what went through Vindsval's mind while planning, designing and ultimately recording and releasing this trilogy, I can imagine it revolves around the philosophical deconstruction of religion, particularly Christendom, not very much unlike their countrymates Deathspell Omega. But while the latter's approach to the subject tends to be much more muscular in the music department and cerebral in the lyrical department, BAN takes a much less literal, much more metaphorical and therefore ethereal approach to christian deconstruction. This is evidenced both in lyrics and in the music itself.
