Biggest metal band(s) in your country?

I'm interested to hear what are the biggest metal bands in different country. Since Iron Maiden and Metallica are big everywhere, you don't need to mention them. I'm neither that interested in all alternative metal bands. In Sweden, where I come from, the biggest are In Flames, Hammerfall (both have scored no 1 on swedish album chart), Nightwish and Sabaton (scored no 2). There are a lot of bands who have scored top 5 in Sweden.

So... metal bands to place highest on your country's music chart? I honestly don't know since I don't pay attention to that, but I'm assuming it's not much different from the States. Probably a lot of hard rock/alternative metal stuff and some heavy metal and prog on the side.

Ahat are very popular in BG. Denis Rizov even hosts his own metal-themed talk show of sorts on BNT 1. I've watched it a few times, it's kind of lame, but they have this rubric where they lampoon Bulgarian history which is fun.

Ahat are quite overrated too, IMO. Don't really like them.

I dunno these days maybe Apocalyptica, Children of Bodom and Nightwish.

Back in 90s there were huge bands like National Napalm Syndicate, A.R.G and Stone. Good times

Biggest band around here? if it was domestic than definitely Cargo, Trooper, Iris and Negura Bunget. no-one has heard of the first 3 i know, but NB actually had some international success for a change.

If it's about any band, national or international, then definitely Metallica. There's a very different attitude regarding their "sellout" days in the 90s, as for a huge majority of metalheads it was the first exposure of any kind to hard rock/metal/whatever. I can honestly say that 90% of Romanian metalheads (including me) had "Enter Sandman", "Nothing Else Matters" and "The Unforgiven" as their childhood/teenage years' soundtrack.

Earlier today I bumped into a friend of mine wearing a NB shirt in Tunisia, and believe it or not, only the most popular bands in the world get their shirts printed in here. So yeah, Negura Bunget are quite big.

About which is the most popular band of all-time, I think it's a tie between Maiden and Metallica, with Priest and Sabbath being close second.

O_O

Not. One. Typo.

Way to answer literally too. He meant biggest as in most popular (big as in "to make it big"), not bands made up of the most musicians.

He didn't have a period at the end of the sentence, so we're still safe for now.

That's a grammatical mistake, not a typo.

Technically the sentence should read: "I would say Therion since there [are] like 20 members in [the] opera recording session."

We're so cool.

Anyway, we should get back on topic.

Uh, biggest domestic metal band is probably Anvil or Heavy Devy or something.

Well the OP is asking for the most popular bands in your respective country - not which domestic band is most popular.

If that were the case I'd think bands like Arch Enemy/Dark Tranquillity/Amon Amarth would be the biggest in Sweden.

Oh ya, and Opeth...

For Spain, in the 80's Baron Rojo was quite famous, they even toured in UK, which was a great success for a spanish band.
In the 90's-beginning 2000 I guess Mago de Oz became more famous.
Right now... Angelus Apatrida somehow -cause I dont think they are so good or original- are touring around Europe and is almost in every Spanish Metal Festival. Oh also Avalanch was even on a TV show around 2005 I think (that is also a great success, to have Metal on TV here ).

I think Aborted is the biggest name out of Belgium. The rest:
Ancient Rites (on hold I think)
Agathocles (in grindcore a really big name all over the world)
Enthroned (black)
Channel Zero (thrash, reformed in 2009)
Leng Tch'e (grindcore)
In-Quest (a lot of kinds of death metal) and in the near future:
Fractured Insanity (brutal death)
Pestifer (technical death)
Gorath (prog black)
Saille (sympho black)
