1990, the world starts to move in mysterious ways. Clouds all over Europe, shadows rising hide the sun, a new dawn of pure decadence is about to begin. Paradise is Lost and its fallen children are Nick Holmes, Greg Mackintosh, Aaron Aedy, Stephen Edmondson and Matthew Archer that farewelled all happiness and lost themselves in the yard of a cemetery on a gloomy mourning day, five black figures in perfect harmony with the dreary landscape. When all doom/death metal bands try to play faster and faster a band from the UK named Paradise Lost slows down playing primary doom/death metal; the fallen angels' cries turned into bleak symphonies.

Another underrated record? I enjoy this way, way more than every other Paradise Lost release.

This is most probably my favourite PL release. I actually enjoy it a lot more than the, imo, overrated follow-up Gothic.

Indeed, this is THE album by the UK death/doom triology. My Dying Bride's debut comes close but the rawness and trully evil atmosphere makes this one the better album by far.

Insanely underrated by the doom scene.

I take it you're referring to Anathema and Cathedral? I can honestly give or take Anathema to be honest.

Well, I actually meant Anathema/Paradise Lost/My Dying Bride, considering they were known as the Peaceville triology back in the day. and I always felt that looking at the debuts alone... The others had no match against Lost Paradise. As The Flower Withers comes very close though.

I always liked the artwork of that album, quite different from what you would expect from that scene.I would love to have a poster of that (minus the red lines which I find kind of pointless) but I'm afraid someone would think it looks kind of nazi.

The movie will obviously be about the genocide of the Alien race.

Nice record, to be sure, but the "underrated" thing I disagree with. If this wasn't released back in 1990, methinks people would see it as a decent, yet not outstanding record, which is pretty much the way I see it.
Gothic walks all over it, IMO.

Wait wut? That seems like a really lousy argument, dude. Wouldn't like... I dunno, most (if not all) releases from the 90s or 80s or pretty much any decade sound outdated and not outstanding at all if released after? Case in point all the revival movements. You are really not explaining your point with that.

Needless to say I disagree with you, I'm yet to find a death/doom release that has this quality in the songs, from the atmosphere and songwriting. If you know any then please be my guest and tell me more tell me more does he have a car?

Ok, sorry for that (it has been in my head since morning)...
Also: Nah, Gothic is a good album but it has some fillers here and there during the entire record. In some aspects it's clearly inferior to Lost Paradise, case in point: Holmes vocals, it was clear that the dude had no future when it comes to growl, they started to sound a bit weakin Gothic and went downhill since then. Plus, the female vocals and keyboards was hit or miss most of the time. The production was pretty light to my ears as well, lacked some meat in the sound so to speak. Mid 7 to low 8 material.

Hhahahaha well, I know that one already, would put it in the same pedestal together with this one, Disembowelment's debut and MDB's debut. Not to mention that PL's debut was released a couple of years before all those albums except Winter which came out the same year so I don't get how this album got underrated considering how it was during that time.

And it is not a matter of publicity I guess since it also came out through Peaceville. This has all the factors that makes a masterpiece and I believe it had a very fresh sound when it came out

I just meant that the influence this album had makes the people praise it more than its actual quality warrants. The typical "worship of the classics". Of course, that's just my 2 cents. I see you, Joe and some others really like it, so I may be wrong.

Innerself beat me to it. Winter and Disembowelment off the top of my head, though if wasn't as lazy I could put in a lot more here.
(pretty sure they have cars too and some hookers in 'em to boot)

[insert the traditional "to each his own" here]

I like the growls, they're somehow more throaty and raw.

And yes, the production was definitively a low point, a re-recording would really be great there.

Well I discovered this retrospectively less than a week ago and I've listened to a fair amount of doom/death and this trounced the majority of what I've heard. That's all I can really say on the matter. The rest of Paradise Lost doesn't really interest me to be honest.

Discussing all of this is rather pointless though. We all know Draconian Times is PL's best.
It's the closest thing to a perfect goth rock album there is at the moment.

This is a fine debut album for a great band. It's very gloomy and harsh and that's why I like it. Though, I still prefer Gothic and Shades Of God.

I gave it a try again. Well, it's a good album. Not my favorite. It's good for death/doom but not such a killer debut. Their next one is better. But don't get me wrong, this is still good but a bit weaker than the bands that continued the style... But still a masterpice.

Let's see if that makes more sense.
