Right now I', working on collecting the followings total discography
Blind Guardian
Anaal Nathrakh
Emperor
Borknagar
Therion
Iced Earth
Kamelot
Epica

For some (mostly my absolute favorites) I want to get ALL their releases and see how they progressed over the years (Blind Guardian is, IMO, a perfect example of this), however, some bands (Iced Earth's SOmething WIcked pt. 1 & 2) have released some real stinkers.

He's probably refering to illegal downloads, which defeats the entire purpose of this thread.

People who equate illegal downloads with legal purchases are retarded. Obviously I can click a link and have virtually any discography I want.

That's what I mean when i say it defeats the purpose of this thread.

The only time I'll illegally download something is if it's from a band I've never heard before, if I like it, I'll pick it up from a show, HMV or whatever.

On topic, I have no discographies, but I'm fairly close to having Ac/Dc's.

I never really collect a full discography.. many reasons, they all release some stinky shit at some point and also because some albums are so fucking hard to find

I'm damn anal when it comes to collecting discographys. I want everything but often find a new band as soon as I start getting somewhere. There's some albums I have two copies of, like my Opeth - Blackwater Park. I paid 25€ for the version with the two bonus tracks, years after I had bought the "ordinary" release. Iron Maiden is the most extreme case in my CD shelf, owning a lot of worthless singles (paid 15€ for one, just because it was limited) and like 5-6 best of, some of which I've never even played on my stereo. I don't care if it's a bad release or an unnecessary one, if I have something released by a band, I must have as much from them as I can find. It is ridiculous, but like a drug.

I dont bother my self with collecting discographies of the bands i like...i just "get in possession" of individual albums that i like... sometimes i have like 1 album from a single band or like more albums... i think that there is no point to gather albums from a certain band (which i generally like) when i dont like the material on them...

I'm weird about this. I only have a fraction of the discography of some of my favourite bands, and I don't want to get any more, because I'm so in love with the music that I have that I don't want to ruin my thoughts of the band by acquiring new music that may not be as good. But then, I'll hear one song from a new band I am just hearing for the first time, and immediately go get their entire discography, usually to my disappointment. So, in summary, I am an idiot.

If you can't even afford this, you're very poor.

I'm not poor - I just don't have the money to spend freely on entire discographies.

He's probably refering to illegal downloads, which defeats the entire purpose of this thread.

As always as stupid you act and the way you born.

when did i referred to illegal downloads? check your facts and get it back again( of what i quoted and its relatedness).

It just depends on the band. Some of my favorite bands...of course I collect all of the albums. Otherwise, only a select few of releases.

Most of the time i'll just collect the albums that I love, but depending on the band, I can have a tendency to buy them all.

Lately, I have mostly purchased albums that I consider a band's essential. I will buy a discography if I really like a band. Recently, I've been mainly purchasing new releases or albums by bands that were not in my collection so my discography efforts have been slowing down.

I'm collecting basic discography of Kreator and Slayer, and a full discography (singles, EPs, etc.) of Metallica. I'm planning to collect disographies of Messiah, Massacra and Catamenia too.
I also have basic discography of Led Zepps.

A real metal collector should buy at least all the studio albums of his favorite bands, even the worst ones.

Even all the Morbid Angel fans? >_> lol

well, I just finished collecting (Luca Turilli) Rhapsody (of Fire) discography, cept for the EP that was released last year that is really just an audio play with a really long song in the middle of it.

I buy the ones I really like because. I also like buying books and pedal effects but neither I don't have too much money to expend on all that because I'm saving some money to study in Spain.

I used to be obsessed with getting all of a bands albums even if I didn't like some, but I have relaxed down now and only get the ones I like. I will get an album if I only like one song on it aswell.

I'm not sure. I always have this "plan" to acquire the complete discographies (studio-albums) of every band I like. When discovering a new band I'll most often purchase one album by them. If I LIKE what I hear, then that's cool, but I'm not rushing out to get more right away. If I DIG it then I'm putting another album or two on my wantlist right away. If I LOVE it then I put the whole discography on my wantlist. So it depends, really. The fact of the matter is, there's just too much good stuff out there. The money I need to completely live out my inner possessed over-anal (Powerslavex, is that even a word? ) collector doesn't exist at the moment. So until then I settle on getting my hands on as much new stuff as economically possible, while at the same time taking notice along the way, of discographies from those bands I newly discovered and really enjoyed.

I'm buying if I like it. In some rare occasions, I am buying the CD's I don't have from a specific band, for example Insomnium. Didn't care that much for their first release, but I bought it anyways, just to complete the discography. Also I found some really cheap CD's from Rammstein that I didn't have, so I bought them too

With The SLoT, I have made it my mission to acquire every version of every sort of thing they ever released, plus everything the members appeared on and everything from their former bands or side projects. They are my favorite band, so that is sort of logical.

At any given time, I have literally hundreds of albums lined up to purchase and as many bands to pursue (I keep lists), and there is simply not enough time to follow everything through to the degree I desire. Usually, I'll get one album, maybe two, from a band simply to establish that they are a part of my collection now and, therefore, have made progress in becoming a firmly-established part of my musical world. Once they make the jump from a footnote to a physical presence in my collection, I am no longer likely to forget about them, and can look into other bands without forgetting my interest in them.

Unfortunately, since there are so many bands, I have a tendency to stop after one or two albums. I seem to think that a couple will tide me over until I have run out of new bands to attend to and can start focusing on filling in the back catalogs. This will never happen, so it's sort of an issue.

My favorite bands, though, I tend to buy everything from more-or-less as soon as I can.

I'm very "anal" when it comes to my favourite bands. I usually buy the CD when it's released and try to complete my collection. It is harder to do that now but I try to find the cheaper places to get the albums. Sometimes I might download it first but eventually I'll buy them unless it is an album I hate like Rotting Christ latest which I didn't even bother to buy even though they are one of my fav bands.

If it is a band i really like i go crazy until i have completed their discography. After that I feel sad that I can't get anymore till a new album comes out (if it does). I also like to make things difficult, I want to get several discographies on vinyl and cassette.
