There were too many sex-related topics in the general forum, and while I'm all for stuff sex-related, I thought I'd give everyone a break from it all with some technology stuff. For those unfamiliar, the term "Browser Wars" is the name given to the competition for dominance in the web browser marketplace. The term is most commonly used to refer to two specific periods of time: the particularly intense struggle between Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator during the late 1990s, and the growing threat which Mozilla Firefox poses to Internet Explorer from 2004 onward. Full Wikipedia article on the topic can be found here. In this topic, we can discuss the different types of browsers, including which browser is your favorite. Of course, if you're going to state which browser is your favorite, gives some reasons as to why so that you are not spamming. My favorite browser would of course have to be Mozilla Firefox. The reason why I like it can be summed up in three words: security, reliability, tabs.

hahahaha - you've just got to love the honesty havent you i use Internet Explorer though i downloaded Firefox and tried it out, but it was so different i didnt give it chance for me to adjust so i went back to what it was used to i dont understand how some people say that the browser you use determins how fast pages load. your internet connection speed does not change depending on your browser..

hmm, I kinda undecided when it comes to ISP's. Like tommy tee said, Firefox's tabs are wonderful, and I"ve found that Firefox is better than Explorer when it comes to viewing the html of the web page. However, Firefox has some small, obscure issues that are kinda annoying, especially on the amazon network that I use. uhhhh....I'll vote for Firefox. The tabs and the downloadable extensions fucking rule. Qwest MSN's ISP is fucking lame. Don't use it!

Firefox. Internet Explorer's set up was just too annoying, plus it didn't have tabbed browsing. I downloaded Firefox and never looked back.

Jester Eddie: Maxthon is built upon the Internet Explorer engine, it's just got an improved user interface. And the IE engine sucks... like pretty much everything related to IE. ^^ Black_Handed: To my knowledge, Firefox renders transparent PNG images perfectly (unlike MSIE 6). Try http://entropymine.com/jason/testbed/pngtrans/

^ yes it does but its a bit weird to use. you can't use full-screen (press F11) if you use the new IE and opening a new tab means having to right click and scroll down a list (which isn't something you can do in a split second like you can with firefox). perhaps im just being pedantic but this does seem a bit annoying. also, IE seems to be considerably slower.

ok - this thread has inadvertently caused so much stress for me. after voting for Internet Explorer, i decided to go and try updating to IE version 7 - as it is quite different and looked interesting installation did not work and it has left my computer in a vegetable like state windows explorer does not work, so i now have no working desktop, no taskbar or srart menu or anything like that. i cant open folders and everything is going so so slow tomorrow i am going back home on train before six in the morning so i can collect my 'master DVD' so i can reformat this computer and get it running properly again how is this relevant to this thread? well i now proclaim i will always use firefox in the future! (i am right now) and i am getting used to it already and it seems much better i am just really annoyed with microsoft now for releasing an update that has wrecked my computer

Firefox is just the best browser right now. it is stable (ie used to freeze for me, in every 10 minutes), has tabs, has a download window, has good plugins, you can apply cool themes to it. and it's icon is nicer too

Firefox and Opera are both safe. If you use Internet Explorer, it's no different than going to bed with your front door open and a sign out front of your house that says please rob me.

what sort of things can firefox mess up with? its not messeed up anything i have done yet.. the only thing i can say about firefox that i dont like is the third mouse button (scroller) counts as the first as well, so i sometimes accidentally open links i dont want when i mean to use the scroller EDIT: actually ive just realised it is 'open in new tab' so it isnt the same as mouse button one. how handy!!

And you can also close tabs by clicking their header with the 3rd button. Well, now that FF 2.0 displays a "close" icon on every tab header, that's not really useful... But I still do that To Opera users: I've heard there was a sort of improved navigation by mouse - you click anywhere on the page and move the mouse to the left and it would load the previous page, for instance. Is it easy to use?

For me it has to be IE. I've used it all my schooling life. And now sixth form have upgraded to the new version. I still prefer it. (sorry if that sounds like I'm just rambling on.)

So up to Firefox if you care about your pc. BTW read this http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10442_7-6656808-1.html?tag=lnav

15.11.2006 - 12:42 Written by wrathchild on 13.11.2006 at 12:03 Omg I didn't know that. Thank you so much for mentioning this. so the third button closes tabs..wow. Anyway, I prefer Firefox. I had a lot of problems with adware and spyware in my time when I used Internet Explorer. Sometimes I hit one wrong link, and the spyware almost ate my computer. With Firefox I never had such problems, not one bit of spyware ever popped up in firefox. Also, the tabbrowsing is just a great extra, which make it even more easier to browse the internet. Since I have Firefox I didn't have any viruses anymore, or problems with "visiting wrong pages". I can even search for cracks etc. on the internet without worrying my computer might mess up haha. I always tell people who are so silly to buy things like Norton Antivirus, that they should download Firefox. I believe that Firefox is a better "anti-virus"-program than a real anti-virus program can ever be. Firefox, combined with a good set of awareness, will keep your computer safe.

@ iaberis: if you're looking for speed, then checks Opera, the lightest and fastest browser (from what I read so far, and my own experience tends to make me think it's right). Also, as I wrote above, Opera has some cool features like the "mouse gesures": you hold the right mouse button and go left, and it will take you to the previous page! There are a lot more gestures, like opening links in another tab, going back to your homepage, etc. But unfortunately, I'm so used to Firefox that Opera is disturbing some (not most) of my browsing habits, like using CTRL+click to open a link in a new tab. With Opera, the default is SHIFT+Click... WHile for both, opening a new empty tab is CTRL+T. I hope you get what I'm trying to say... Anyway, Opera is excellent, but so is Firefox. I know how I can customize Firefox the way I want with all those add-ons and guess what, there's an extension that gives Firefox the ability to use mouse gestures. It's working quite well! See by yourself: http://optimoz.mozdev.org/gestures/
