I was surprised not to find a topic for these death metal veterans. Starting in the late eighties, Autopsy went on to release two of the most critically acclaimed death metal albums of all time, Severed Survival and Mental Funeral. The sound on those records can be described as slow, doomy old-school death with murky production and filthy vocals and gory lyrics (Better than CC's). If you still haven't got into them, here are some songs by them:

Well Mental Funeral is still one of my all-time favorite death metal releases, but I've never heard of Autopsy's first two full-lengths being the most critically acclaimed death metal albums ever. That's a major stretch considering bands like Death are a little more... critically acclaimed.

I still haven't heard Death's Death metal albums :/
*GASP*
I should probably get on that.

Surprised that this is the first main thread for the band. Their first two albums are very enjoyable, but nearly everyone seems to have them in their top albums for the genre, so I think they are a bit overrated. I don't care for their recent material at all tbh.
Haven't heard Shitfun, but that album and Acts of the Unspeakable are never talked about. I just listened to Acts of the Unspeakable for the first time recently and very much enjoyed it. Most would disagree, but it might be at the same caliber as their first two albums.

They are definitely CLASSICS if you ask me, maybe not so much as Death or Morbid Angel but they are definitely classics.

I never said they weren't - pretty much anyone who listens to death metal, even passively, is well aware that their first two releases are death metal classics. But he said they're the most critically acclaimed death metal releases ever, something I disagree with being that there are dozens of albums that are on the same level as them.
Ok, let me correct it and say that they're two of the most critically acclaimed albums AMONG death metal fans. And IMO, those two records are better than a lot of albums which are more critically acclaimed (Altars Of Madness....).
And BTW I don't know why everyone on the site bashes me when I say that Lord Worm sucks, and nobody says a thing to Willy when he says that the first two Autopsy albums are meh.

Because Lord Worm is fucking great, that's why.

Oh no, you didn't type that!
For me Autopsy was a big thing back in the day: very good early death metal when I started listening metal and there weren't a lot of bands we could listen.
I consider their first two as "classic" but not on the same level as Altars, Left Hand Path, Spiritual Healing, Deicide, Slowly We Rot.
Nevertheless albums you must own if you're into death metal.

You claimed to stop listening to death metal before venturing into "vndergrovnd" black metal and Tanner has said on more than one occasion that his appreciation for death metal doesn't extend beyond a handful of bands.

yeah, I took a break from death metal, and now I'm getting back into it.
Hmm... the first two Autopsy albums definitely are critically acclaimed, and due to them, Autopsy themselves are seen as being highly influential in the genre of death metal. High profile bands in the genre like Entombed and Cannibal Corpse have cited them as a major influence on their music.
Mental Funeral is the bomb. So good that I need to bring out phrases that were outdated before I was born to describe it. Macabre Eternal is really good also; has one of my favorite death metal vocal performances.
