Deep Purple - Founding Member Jonathan Douglas "Jon" Lord Passes Away Aged 71

Sadly, we have to announce the passing of Jon Lord, former keyboard player of Deep Purple, who suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism today, Monday 16th of July, at the London Clinic, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jonathan Douglas "Jon" Lord co-wrote many of the band's legendary songs including "Smoke On The Water" and played with many bands and musicians throughout his career, including Whitesnake, but he retired from Deep Purple in 2002. Lord was also a celebrated composer. Since retiring from Deep Purple, Lord released two classical albums: Durham Concerto (2008) and To Notice Such Things (2010).

Deep Purple was the first rock band I ever heard when my uncle played Fireball to me when I was about 6.
For that I will always remember him.

This man was part of our history. Jon gave us great music, we shall never forgot his talent. Time never stands still. In a moment like this only thought I have is to take from life as much as you can. Dont wait, there is always your time.

This is sad news indeed. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. I think Jon Lord was a pioneer with his incorporating of keyboards into hard rock music. I'll listen to some Deep Purple today and remember how good he was. He certainly entertained a lot of people with his wild keyboard playing.

I'm sad about this, but I guess that we should get used to it. Dio and him had been having health problems for quite a while, fortunately Iommi appears to have been spared for now.

Yes i think we should get used to this, all these legends of the past/present are getting very old and will continue to die off one by one over the next couple decades, and eventually none will be left from the early years of metal, We need to fully enjoy these musicians while we can. RIP John

The hammond intro of "Perfect Strangers" has always sent chills down my spine. It will do so even more from now on. Rest in peace, Jon, and thank you for leaving us that legacy of yours.
